Deep inside? I thought that was the point of the part where he tries to wow those college girls with shallow pseudoreligion. It's one of the first things you learn about him so that the rest of the movie carries that tension when you see people believing his speeches later.
In a very special episode of Diff'rent Strokes, Arnold hangs out with an old guy who's trying to molest him. At one point, he shows Arnold an X-rated furry porn cartoon called Murphy the Mouse. When I think of what such a cartoon would look like, I always think it must be Fritz the Cat, but a mouse.
I've read all the original comics, and loved both movies.

This is actually likely, if you look at the people Crumb was hanging around with. He was drawing portraits of women who were famous art critics and scholars from old money families. Bakshi on the otherhand seemed to like Fritz and his world. There's a lot of nostalgia dripping in the movie, Crumb was writing what he thought these people were like but Bakshi seemed to be creating from experience as a New Yorker in the 60's. Sometimes I wonder if that's part of the disconnect with Bakshi and crumb. Bakshi seemed more forgiving to Fritz's flaws as a young dumb kid doing what any dumb college kid would be like- prone to his own self-obsessed notions of how the world was like, thinking he had everything figured out. A loveable scamp, compared to Crumb's take on him as a more despicable self-serving butthole.
Of course, Bakshi has also said that Crumb mainly took offense to Bakshi's director's credit taking priority over his "created by" credit, and thought people would think Bakshi created Fritz.
But I don't think my theory is entirely wrong. In some ways there's a sincere love letter to an era from Bakshi in the movie.

Absolutely. A lot of his early comics were him pining over what he didn't have and felt like he deserved. Though once he got out of highschool, he got suckered into a marriage. As his art became more popular and his fame rose, he got to live his dreams. Cheated on his wife a bunch, moved into a commune, dated and then married a cartoonist who looked like one of his drawings, and then continued to frick hippie chicks and groupies from then on.

I lost some respect for Bakshi after finding out he went to Crumb’s ex wife to get the rights to make his film, I lost A LOT of respect for Bakshi when he was in collaboration with Vaughn Bode to make wizards, and when Bode died he used the designs slightly altered so there were no royalties to the Bode estate.
I learned this from Mark his son, spoke with him at a few conventions about it.
That said I love Bakshi’s work and I am ecstatic to finally have American Pop on blu ray

It's a very specific part of the 60s too, those last couple of years where the hangover was starting to set in and the earliest signs of how shitty the 70s were about to be were creeping their way into things. It's basically a movie about how American society was starting to unravel by 1969.

I think Crumb hated Fritz Fritz to him was the guy Crumb couldn't be, and wouldn't be if his art didn't catch on. There's a lot of nostalgia dripping in the movie, Crumb was writing what he thought these people were like but Bakshi seemed to be creating from experience as a New Yorker in the 60's. Sometimes I wonder if that's part of the disconnect with Bakshi and crumb. Bakshi seemed more forgiving to Fritz's flaws as a young dumb kid doing what any dumb college kid would be like- prone to his own self-obsessed notions of how the world was like, thinking he had everything figured out. A loveable scamp, compared to Crumb's take on him as a more despicable self-serving butthole.
Of course, Bakshi has also said that Crumb mainly took offense to Bakshi's director's credit taking priority over his "created by" credit, and thought people would think Bakshi created Fritz.
But I don't think my theory is entirely wrong. In some ways there's a sincere love letter to an era from Bakshi in the movie.

I lost some respect for Bakshi after finding out he went to Crumb’s ex wife to get the rights to make his film, I lost A LOT of respect for Bakshi when he was in collaboration with Vaughn Bode to make wizards, and when Bode died he used the designs slightly altered so there were no royalties to the Bode estate.

Heavy Traffic's always been my favorite Bakshi movie but Fritz has its moments, very rooted in its time but parts of it hold up surprisingly well.

They're both a mix of endearing and deplorable that a coat of fur makes a little more appealing. I've been with those kinds of guys, it's exactly as bad as you imagine it but they really do have some charm that almost makes it bearable in small doses. it's like looking through a mirror, darkly
