I cannot think of a significant story, film, or television show specifically starring Mickey Mouse in my lifetime. I'm 31. Ironically, the best he's gotten are games. Several on the SNES and Genesis. An important role in Kingdom Hearts. Those Epic Mickey games.
But what the fuck has Mickey done otherwise? Goofy has Goof Troop in the 90s, and a couple of movies in that setting. Donald had Ducktails, and things related in that realm. If they just gave Mickey consistent shows and content, people would like him more.
>Mickey Mouse Clubhouse >The new Mickey Mouse cartoons on Disney Plus >House of Mouse >Various direct to DVD movies such as The 3 Musketeers (not to be confused with 3 Caballeros)
Those are just off the top of my head.
The biggest issue is that Disney is so afraid of tainting Mickey's image that they don't want to do anything properly interesting with him.
There are a few directions they could take to make him more than just a "mascot" character, and giving him more of a proper personality. I like how he's often portrayed as the "sane man" of the group of him, Donald and Goofy. I also like how his character (generally very successful everyman with loving wife who occasionally gets into mishaps) contrasts against Goofy (clueless simpleton who gets himself into trouble through his own stupidity, raises a son as a single father) and Donald (stubborn, potential exmilitary, often gets himself into trouble because of his big mouth). If Disney REALLY wanted to, I think it'd be pretty cool to try and tie him into Goof Troop and Ducktales with a relatively simple slice of life show a la Looney Tunes Show, maybe taking place during college, to show WHY they work as a team (and also maybe to show how they got to know each other).
Adding onto this, while I know some people don't like it, I really liked Three Musketeers since it did give us a proper insight into the relationship of the three of them. I think Disney should just do more of that.
The most recent Mickey cartoon was pretty fucking good. I'd disagree and say Disney allowed Mickey to do stuff they normally would never let him be a part of, like grossout humour for example.
>The most recent Mickey cartoon was pretty fucking good.
Eh, the animation was fun but the jokes were awful, it was nice to see Mickey being a fun person force once though.
This is true.
He’s got a girlfriend, and dog. Goofy stole his frenemy, Pete, for Goof Troop though. So use his comics villains like Eli Squinch, The Double Ecks scientists, Shyster guy, and etc.
Expand on his relationship with his older sister Amelia Fieldmouse.
Show flashbacks that he and Donald and Goofy were roommates in college.
Show his complicated relationship with Oswald.
They let Mario be more than just "the face of the company", and lately they're trying to give him more attitude and emotion. Mickey nowadays is just a bland goody-two-shoes that always smiles, the only thing that got him close to a personality were the Disney Channel shorts (that started in 2013 and were basically grandfathered in for the next decade).
at the end of the day, Mario is a human and Mickey is a mouse. Animals may work for young people (and of course furries), but for actual engagement the majority of people will prefer humans.
What made Disney REALLY famous was not mickey mouse, it was the fairytale movies.
Mickey was ruined when they changed his personality from happy go lucky and hyperative to a calm boring straightman and voice of the reason. The new mickey shorts are almost like his original personality but still not quite.
Disney treat Mickey like a literal sacred cow, also Mickey just lack his "own thing" to do, his original shorts were just generic short stories that were rip offs of Felix the Cat shorts.
Mario in the other hand got a clear premise, fight Bowser and Donkey Kong and save the day
I disagree with this, the Paul ruddish Mickey mouse, really player up the comedy with making Mickey too innocent. That's Mikeys big gimmick he's always the nice guy. Once you play up on that with wealness’s of him being a doormat at times and too trusting it can be comedy gold. In fact you could easily place Micky up with Wander, particularly the Paul Ruddish Mickey and it works.
I feel like Mickey has a reputation as being kind of wimpy. I think as time goes on, Mario will gain that same reputation. But Mario is still relatively new and still has some of the coolness of the original handful of games proping it up. But Mario has gotten lamer and lamer as time has gone on if you pay attention.
Say what you will about Mario, but Mario is not wimpy. A huge part of his appeal is the juxtaposition between him being an everyman manlet and the monstrous to outright eldritch threats he fights.
Mickey's fought eldrich in the past too. Kingdom Hearts technically counts. It's just that technically speaking you feel less invested in someone who's "won" all their battles already. Even in KH Mickey rarely loses anything. Even in media Mickey Mouse has always been best when he has something at stake and something to gain. Which is kind of like life. Exciting in its question. Uninteresting in its resolution.
Mario and Peach were never a couple and Mario was never a chad, so it's not like they really changed anything like happened to Toy Story 4 where the characters were pretty much replaced by new versions.
Why is everyone criticizing Mickey as if Mario were any better?
I'm a Nintendrone, love me Bing Bing Wahoo games, but solely for the gameplay.
There is nothing particularly charismatic about Mario and who cares about the story? It's a video-game, Mario 64 is the best Mario game because there is basically no dialogue, Sunshine is the slapstick version of it.
As long as the colorscheme is good and easy to follow during play, that's all I need.
Mario doesn't need much character because he's from a video game and gameplay is important. People criticize Mickey's personality and writing because he's a cartoon character and you're supposed to like the characters you watch in some form, hence, the way people interpret his character is more important than how they interpret Mario, who people will already like and recognize since all he has to do is show up in good video games.
I cannot think of a significant story, film, or television show specifically starring Mickey Mouse in my lifetime. I'm 31. Ironically, the best he's gotten are games. Several on the SNES and Genesis. An important role in Kingdom Hearts. Those Epic Mickey games.

No it's not, Mickey at a time was THE most well known fictional character and now Mario has stolen that spot, hence the thread being about what Mickey's problems are and the potential way Mickey can reclaim his spot.
Mickey can't reclaim his spot because of how sterilized he's seen
Disney's best bet is to not change Donald, do not put him in kiddie shit and push him in games and films. Because Donald is by far the second most popular Disney character (in many countries the most popular) and doesn't have that stigma
Because Mario is at the very least consistent, Mickey is possibly the most inconsistent of all mainstream cartoon characters and they pretty much lack a main personality now with Disney randomly changing between the classic hyperative personality and the more "mature" and known one.
Mickey is basically a non character nowadays what is weird because other Disney characters such as Goofy and Donald were allowed to keep their original personality ever since they were created.
He's got everything. He's got a princess. He's got a castle. He's been in space. He's been a doctor. Both deal in magic. Mickey has done more than Mario. Mario hasn't been in the army. He's fought armies, but hasn't really been in one apart from the Royal Court. Which technically counts I guess as a Knight. It's weird to think that. "Sir Mario", "Lord Mario" and if he gets married to peach "King Mario."
I suppose one of the reasons Mario is popular is because he's still having fun. Even after all these years, he never really said: "King me" and finished his adventure. It's always been one thing leading to the next. An attempt at peace followed by a massive shattering of it.
His message is always: "Let'sa go!"

Mario is allowed to have *slightly* more of a personality.

Minions and Family Guy were never great but they are still funny, Simpsons and Mickey used to be great but thet are just boring now.
Disney treat Mickey like a literal sacred cow, also Mickey just lack his "own thing" to do, his original shorts were just generic short stories that were rip offs of Felix the Cat shorts.

THIS, my god his shorts voice is fucking annoying, what is bizarre since his iconic voice is so pleasant to hear.

Mario first game where he fights Donkey Kong is still his most iconic piece of media ever, so in a way DK will always be mario second arch enemy.
Mario and Peach were never a couple and Mario was never a chad, so it's not like they really changed anything like happened to Toy Story 4 where the characters were pretty much replaced by new versions.
That's not Nintendo bowing to the west or politics, that's just the basic law of entropy. Nothing stays good forever. Not even Mario.
Mickey and the gang are still adults in the Clubhouse shows, they're just tailored to a younger audience.
Why is everyone criticizing Mickey as if Mario were any better?

In that case, OP's comparison is unfair.

Why does Hank Hill works so well with literally every other character?
No it's not, Mickey at a time was THE most well known fictional character and now Mario has stolen that spot, hence the thread being about what Mickey's problems are and the potential way Mickey can reclaim his spot.
Well, not when the answer to the question "What does Mario have?" is "fewer expectations put on him because he's not a cartoon".
Mickey can't reclaim his spot because of how sterilized he's seen

Miyamoto hasn't been involved with Mario for years now. He's become an administrative person and is just overseeing Nintendo projects.
Miyamoto hasn't directed a Mario game since Mario 64.

Why does Cinemaphile defend this? No wonder Cinemaphile and Cinemaphile makes fun of you daily.
Mario has multiple western cartoon adaptions and therefore can be considered on-topic. Cinemaphilepe.

Peach is a princess so he'd be Prince Mario
Now for some real controversy.
What the hell are we gonna do about this guy?!
I tolds ya. Give it back. You gotta pass the ball buster.
To be frank, Mickey is more Italian than Mario, barring the DIC cartoon.
