Nah this is probably the last time we're seeing him, seeing an alternate universe where he won and the speech he gave to Golb feel very "final" for his character.
Adventure Time has spent the entirety of its existence setting up the Lich to be something so scary and horrifying while at the same time making him an utter joke in the face of the boundless optimism of the main protagonist.

We know the Lich succeeded in that Universe WHILE Simon was still Ice King (you see a frame during one of his video tapes where he turns into a skeleton). So whatever Lich did in that universe he did it quite early on. It's just a universe where the Lich won. IIRC he was wished there, so maybe his wish was that he won, which in turn sent him a universe where everyone was killed. I think the hand that was cut off and then went to control new death is all over the multiverse because Jake cut it off and kicked it into that universe portal Ice Finn was making

That's the problem, the writers REALLY don't want a main antagonist, especially one who's not "funny". Did you even watch the show? AT is not lolrandom, it's more thought-through than most of the actual lolrandom episodic shows Cinemaphile creams themselves over. F&C had a serious tone for the majority of it, not to mention that GOLB itself is not funny.

Yeah and that's the really what's the source of the depression. He's somewhat better now after all this soul searching but Simon can't forget a girl like Betty.
Also being burnt out isn't what to take from the Fionna and Cake series, this was suppose to wrap up Simon and Betty's arc with some more closure since the og finale and distant lands were too open ended with it; This arc was built up in small increments since Season 3. I'd say they did a decent job.
Next adventure time series will most likely be ooo 1000 years later, since they gave us some content here in F&C.
That is the point, yes. Simon and Betty repeatedly made major sacrifices in their obsession for each other, and once elder chaos gods got involved it was too far gone. Betty can't come back anymore, and Simon has to stop trying to sacrifice himself for people he cares about. He doesn't have to prove that he's worthy of living to anyone, most of all himself.
I don't have the time to watch this series at the moment but I'm glad I got to experience this scene without spoiling it for myself ahead of time on TV Tropes or on here. Ideally I should have sat down and watched the whole thing but I regret nothing. Why did he(she?) do it?

I think it was more GOLB's doing than Betty's. He is Chaos, and a Lich who fulfilled his purpose is effectively useless to a being of chaos. Think about it, threatening all life with extinction will cause chaos, but actually extinguishing all life leaves behind a stagnated chaos-less wasteland. By succeeding in killing all life, Lich outlived his purpose in the eyes of GOLB.
That just opens up so many questions that will probably never be answered and if they were, it wouldn't be satisfying. How much is the Lich's goals to end all life part of his function or part of his own personal agency? If it was all due to his own volition, how could the "teachings" of the god he worships completely go over his head like that? Unless the writers intend for him to be a Nyarlathotep-like figure in that though he's an incomprehensible evil, he's still prone to human error.

My headcanon from back in the day was that wizards went out of hiding at some point and revealed the existence of magic, and this somehow led to a war between humans and the wizards. Basically like Harry Potter if it took a turn for the worst. The humans would be greatly outgunned because they'd lack magic, and so they'd turn to nukes. The Lich personifies the destructive power of everything that both factions of mankind created.
I'm surprised they didn't go with this. It seems really obvious once you reveal that there was a secret society of wizards in hiding long before the nuclear war, which happened during Stakes.

What's your lich like? I always get caught up in what they should be wearing. Skeletons are so small that it's pretty difficult to dress them up in anything that fits or looks good on them. I mostly favor simple black robes, but even then...
Something as simple as getting a haircut can make your hat no longer fit your head, so imagine that applied to not having any skin or flesh to speak of, anywhere.
If your lich isn't wearing the most elaborate robes, decorated in layers of intricate israelitelery designed to represent death and his power then he's just a skinner than usual wizard.
Here's his look as soon as the ritual ends. Gonna commission an endgame look later. As for personality, hrs a mage got got to where he is by cheating and stealing. Imagine a Top Grad student who used Quizlet, Cheggs, and AI to become valedictorian.
The issue there is you can't become a Lich without being a good Wizard. The ritual it demands basically cannot be cast by a low level wizard or it obliterates your soul, that is why Liches are such strong enemies, the ritual magnifies their already outstanding magical ability and turns them into literal forces of nature.
A Lich ritual isn't just one of a few sacrifices, it's commiting an absolute horrific act. sacrificing a cities children, defiling a grove of a unicorn etc etc.
What you're confusing is a Lich for someone who willingly becomes an Undead Mage; there is a reason Liches are end game enemies on par with shit like the Avatar of Tiamat or a Demon Lord manifestation, because Liches are not up and coming wizards who dabble in dark art, they're immortal fricks who have written the BOOKS on Dark Magic.

That first appearance was not only the best Lich but it also mixed in the best ending, with Finn being saved by PB's "i like you finn" sweater. Badass and heartwarming at the same time. Then both of those aspects slowly died over time, with the Lich becoming more of a standard villain to give monologues and PB/Finn's relationship becoming more... whatever the frick it was later where the power of love sweater would never be a thing.

The game Sherman plays is cute but it would have been better to go explore the Litch through the lense of Simons perceived worthlessness.

I wonder why the show spent time putting in so much support for Hunter and Huntress Wizard's philosophy. It essentially all but tells us that the hunter's mindset is the key to understanding the secrets of this universe. What an odd bit of subtext given that the show has next to nothing to do with any version of HW.
Imo they're probably building her up for some future series, Hunter had as big of a role, if not bigger than Marshall and Gary in the finale. He was basically treated as the "fifth main character", makes me feel like they're gonna do something involving her in the future
What really tipped me off was that they brought back the dandelion symbol that Hunter showed Fionna in the first episode but this time as a representation of their entire universe. That has some pretty obvious implications about Hunter's world view.

That is not what “chaos” means and not what “heat death” means. Chaos is the turning of a s ystem from orderly from disorderly, and the entire universe is chaotic by default in Newton’s 2nd law. Lifeforms are the opposite, we take disorderly stray particles and make ourselves more complex and orderly. Life exists in a state where it decreases entropy within itself.
Chaos does not mean “acting randumb and quirky”, it means disorder, and your particles are much more disorderly when you’re rotting.
Akshually, *entropy* is the measure of how disorderly a system is. Chaos, at least in physics, is used to describe a system with highly unpredictable, seemingly random behaviour. They're not interchangeable terms.

Some part of me thinks that GOLB blocked the Lich because the Betty part of GOLB recognized the Lich as something that threatened Simon, and she eliminated it.
i'm not sure if he was even a threat to him at that point. the lich himself admits he lost all purpose in successfully annihilating all life, leaving him begging for meaning at the hands of a god that opposes that notion by its very existence. simon summarizes it well enough in the finale that chaos, in golb's own language, is the annihilation of *purpose* along with order, empty calories and all. you're probably right though that regardless, the lich would have tried to return to old habits and technically threaten simon again

The Lich is essentially a machine created to fulfill a specific purpose of bringing about destruction. When that purpose is fulfilled, he is summoned to GOLB and given his ultimate reward - an eternity of nothing. He was never meant to continue existing past the moment he fulfills his goal, which is why he breaks down and demands a meaning for his existence.
Someone else already said this but I love the way GOLB communicates. Instead of using words or even telepathy, it literally rips your mind out of your body and sends it to alternate realities to convey a message. Lovecraft would be proud.
I like that part in the finale when after Betty fused with GOLB it turned into a monochrome amorphous mass of lines as it reformed into GOLBetty. Just something so cosmologically unusual even other eldritch entities like Orgalorg can't compare.

The Lich hand from Farmworld seemed to have the same memories and consciousness as the Lich that originally appeared in the series and whose body became Sweet P; in “Whispers” the hand calls the original Lich “me” and views Sweet P as his “son”, and also appears to be aware of everything that all of the alternate versions of himself are doing.
Also in “Together Again” he remembers everything that Finn did to all of his various incarnations.

It worked because after all these years that's one of the few new things you can do with the character. Also fitting for a show where the main characters lived for only one goal instead of appreciating what was there in the first place. He paralleled Simon's crazy quest very nicely.

The lich very much is an intimidating, no nonsense being, who KNOWS what he's about, and has zero bumbling to him.
This guy is introduced with extremely goofy mannerisms by showing how he has only "Semi-related" knowledge (Getting the name wrong, constantly missing where he's at, ect.), and having a very comical and weak fear of dogs.
The lich never acted buffoonishly, and he never showed weakness in his powers or strategies.

It's really bizarre to me that after all this time building the Lich up to be this alien being that thinks more like a machine than a person, they go and reveal that he has actual human-like emotional needs and becomes distressed when they aren't met. A machine doesn't care if it can carry out its intended function or not, it doesn't have a concept of purpose or fulfillment.
It's interesting, because he still remained completely inactive and only voiced his concerns once he was in the presence of a being that could actually address them.

I'm starting to think that the Lich has become the Ultimate Joke of Adventure Time; from a serious personification of perpetual war and genocide in the pitch, to a monologue villain who takes his job too seriously. Like Prismo was a literal god being who was scared of the scarab, but by contrast Fiona and Winter king could beat the scarab. This is because its like having a boss in real life, its not about "Can I punch my boss out?" Its about "this is my literal boss"
just like in real life, if you just murder your boss, you're going to get the cops coming to kick down your door or you'll be fired if you just try and punch them out.
Hence you don't have to be super powerful to be feared, because if you're higher up in the corporate chain you can tell the boss boss (And presumably there's higher level reality beings that make prismo's powers look like nothing), and they'll deal with you.
I kind of feel like people who complain that the Lich isn't "cool" in the end sort of miss the point, and I say that as someone who isn't even a big Adventure Time fan.
Evil characters can look cool, but evil itself isn't supposed to be "cool". Evil is ultimately ugly, banal, idiotic, purposeless, and self-defeating. Of course the Lich would be revealed to be pathetic in the end - evil always exhausts and destroys itself when all is said and done, because evil is inherently parasitic in nature and fundamentally irrational. That's why devil figures in practically every mythology are frequently portrayed as foolish, impotent, and miserable, they're at odds with themselves.
The Lich is cool as a character, but as a "person" he was never cool. He's just a big douchebag monster who wants to kill everyone. I can't speak to the rest of the writing flaws of this show, but displaying the vacuity of evil isn't really something I have a problem with.

The Lich could've been cool in what he could've represented. He could've been death, or war, or time, even a more abstract "the end". Any number things is what he could've been. It would've been interesting to explore how different characters grapple with any of those concepts, interact with them, fight against them, or fuel them, communicated through how they interact with the character. The Lich COULD HAVE been cool.

Why would the other blocks be others liches? That specific lich only got there because of Simon, who is also the only Simon to lose his Betty to GOLB, and the only Simon who was put in a position to portal to GOLB in the first place (being the only Simon running from the Scarab because he is the only Simon with the F&C verse in his head).
We know that rituals can open portals to Golb's domain, it seems sensible that other Liches have been more motivated to visit Golb in person once their work was done.

Seriously though, the Farmworld Lich's introduction because getting to see how a Lich is born was pretty cool and it also lets you have fun imagining what kinds of Liches there are across the multiverse depending on what thing or person gets hit by the bomb.
He's still rockin' the voice but the Lich sounds somewhat off to me for some reason. Not that it's bad but it almost sounds like the most high-pitched and even somewhat normal the character has ever sounded in his entire history. Then again like you just said, the script sounds like something for an entirely different character so you're probably right about the writing being more to blame for what I'm feeling over Perlman's performance. Also, at this exact point, I can't unhear All for One's dub voice.
Let's say, hypothetically, you get to Prismo just before Fionna and Cake are called to his Time Room, and have one wish to prevent the various failures and follies about to ensue.

We know the Lich succeeded in that Universe WHILE Simon was still Ice King (you see a frame during one of his video tapes where he turns into a skeleton). So whatever Lich did in that universe he did it quite early on. It's just a universe where the Lich won. IIRC he was wished there, so maybe his wish was that he won, which in turn sent him a universe where everyone was killed. I think the hand that was cut off and then went to control new death is all over the multiverse because Jake cut it off and kicked it into that universe portal Ice Finn was making

Did you even watch the show? AT is not lolrandom, it's more thought-through than most of the actual lolrandom episodic shows Cinemaphile creams themselves over. F&C had a serious tone for the majority of it, not to mention that GOLB itself is not funny.

That is the point, yes. Simon and Betty repeatedly made major sacrifices in their obsession for each other, and once elder chaos gods got involved it was too far gone. Betty can't come back anymore, and Simon has to stop trying to sacrifice himself for people he cares about. He doesn't have to prove that he's worthy of living to anyone, most of all himself.

I think it was more GOLB's doing than Betty's. He is Chaos, and a Lich who fulfilled his purpose is effectively useless to a being of chaos. Think about it, threatening all life with extinction will cause chaos, but actually extinguishing all life leaves behind a stagnated chaos-less wasteland. By succeeding in killing all life, Lich outlived his purpose in the eyes of GOLB.
That just opens up so many questions that will probably never be answered and if they were, it wouldn't be satisfying. How much is the Lich's goals to end all life part of his function or part of his own personal agency? If it was all due to his own volition, how could the "teachings" of the god he worships completely go over his head like that? Unless the writers intend for him to be a Nyarlathotep-like figure in that though he's an incomprehensible evil, he's still prone to human error.
So many people would make fun of the autists that wanted to see more Mushroom War lore but I bet expanding upon it and how the Lich came to be in the main timeline probably sounds like it would have been the better outcome in hindsight.

My headcanon from back in the day was that wizards went out of hiding at some point and revealed the existence of magic, and this somehow led to a war between humans and the wizards. Basically like Harry Potter if it took a turn for the worst. The humans would be greatly outgunned because they'd lack magic, and so they'd turn to nukes. The Lich personifies the destructive power of everything that both factions of mankind created.
I'm surprised they didn't go with this. It seems really obvious once you reveal that there was a secret society of wizards in hiding long before the nuclear war, which happened during Stakes.
The Lich being a follower of Golb makes sense since he seeks to end all life and Golb is the embodiment of destruction. And it's not a retcon, he referred to himself as the last scholar of Golb in Whispers from the original show
He's the personification of CHAOS, not destruction though. Destruction is merely an aspect of chaos, but so is spontaneous mutation/evolution of life.

The issue there is you can't become a Lich without being a good Wizard. The ritual it demands basically cannot be cast by a low level wizard or it obliterates your soul, that is why Liches are such strong enemies, the ritual magnifies their already outstanding magical ability and turns them into literal forces of nature.
A Lich ritual isn't just one of a few sacrifices, it's commiting an absolute horrific act. sacrificing a cities children, defiling a grove of a unicorn etc etc.
What you're confusing is a Lich for someone who willingly becomes an Undead Mage; there is a reason Liches are end game enemies on par with shit like the Avatar of Tiamat or a Demon Lord manifestation, because Liches are not up and coming wizards who dabble in dark art, they're immortal fricks who have written the BOOKS on Dark Magic.

Mortal Folly, in spite of it focusing heavily on Ice King, still depicted the Lich as closely as he was intended to be; a destructive force of nature whose only intent is leaving death in his path. It could have been better, but it was a solid introduction to the character and should have led to greater heights rather than turning him into what he eventually became

That first appearance was not only the best Lich but it also mixed in the best ending, with Finn being saved by PB's "i like you finn" sweater. Badass and heartwarming at the same time. Then both of those aspects slowly died over time, with the Lich becoming more of a standard villain to give monologues and PB/Finn's relationship becoming more... whatever the frick it was later where the power of love sweater would never be a thing.

The entire point was to be chill. The rules exist so that bad bits of it can be punished, but beetle jannie was punishing crossovers and people that were causing no harm or issue to the world they lived in. If they're breaking the rules but causing no issues, then be chill.

I wonder why the show spent time putting in so much support for Hunter and Huntress Wizard's philosophy. It essentially all but tells us that the hunter's mindset is the key to understanding the secrets of this universe. What an odd bit of subtext given that the show has next to nothing to do with any version of HW.
Imo they're probably building her up for some future series, Hunter had as big of a role, if not bigger than Marshall and Gary in the finale. He was basically treated as the "fifth main character", makes me feel like they're gonna do something involving her in the future
What really tipped me off was that they brought back the dandelion symbol that Hunter showed Fionna in the first episode but this time as a representation of their entire universe. That has some pretty obvious implications about Hunter's world view.

That is not what “chaos” means and not what “heat death” means. Chaos is the turning of a s ystem from orderly from disorderly, and the entire universe is chaotic by default in Newton’s 2nd law. Lifeforms are the opposite, we take disorderly stray particles and make ourselves more complex and orderly. Life exists in a state where it decreases entropy within itself.
Chaos does not mean “acting randumb and quirky”, it means disorder, and your particles are much more disorderly when you’re rotting.

The Lich is essentially a machine created to fulfill a specific purpose of bringing about destruction. When that purpose is fulfilled, he is summoned to GOLB and given his ultimate reward - an eternity of nothing. He was never meant to continue existing past the moment he fulfills his goal, which is why he breaks down and demands a meaning for his existence.
Someone else already said this but I love the way GOLB communicates. Instead of using words or even telepathy, it literally rips your mind out of your body and sends it to alternate realities to convey a message. Lovecraft would be proud.
I like that part in the finale when after Betty fused with GOLB it turned into a monochrome amorphous mass of lines as it reformed into GOLBetty. Just something so cosmologically unusual even other eldritch entities like Orgalorg can't compare.

The Lich hand from Farmworld seemed to have the same memories and consciousness as the Lich that originally appeared in the series and whose body became Sweet P; in “Whispers” the hand calls the original Lich “me” and views Sweet P as his “son”, and also appears to be aware of everything that all of the alternate versions of himself are doing.
Also in “Together Again” he remembers everything that Finn did to all of his various incarnations.

Obviously there wouldn't have been anything else to do. He had a purpose, he fulfilled it, the end. He should've been prepared to just ride out eternity.

Yeah, I thought it was a little lame such a being could get "down in the dumps". The Lich isn't human, he desires nothing but the extinction of all life, which is as far away as you can get from human notions. It's not the same as getting your dream job or finally getting a speedrunning world record so the "getting want I wanted leaves me empty" trope seems odd. If they gave more time into humanising the Lich (which I don't think they should do as for the reasons above) maybe it would be more palatable but I think they just wanted to use him a vessel for analogy. It would've made more sense if he sought his own destruction after he suceeded, really he should've simply sought going to other universes and ending life there the second Simon showed up from another universe. I thought he was gonna jump into simon's head for a second (although just killing simon would've given the same result)
It worked because after all these years that's one of the few new things you can do with the character. Also fitting for a show where the main characters lived for only one goal instead of appreciating what was there in the first place. He paralleled Simon's crazy quest very nicely.

The lich very much is an intimidating, no nonsense being, who KNOWS what he's about, and has zero bumbling to him.
This guy is introduced with extremely goofy mannerisms by showing how he has only "Semi-related" knowledge (Getting the name wrong, constantly missing where he's at, ect.), and having a very comical and weak fear of dogs.
The lich never acted buffoonishly, and he never showed weakness in his powers or strategies.

It's really bizarre to me that after all this time building the Lich up to be this alien being that thinks more like a machine than a person, they go and reveal that he has actual human-like emotional needs and becomes distressed when they aren't met. A machine doesn't care if it can carry out its intended function or not, it doesn't have a concept of purpose or fulfillment.
It's interesting, because he still remained completely inactive and only voiced his concerns once he was in the presence of a being that could actually address them.

As such, the complete extinction of life is lawful as it caused solely by a thinking (and therefore semi-orderly) entity.

I kind of feel like people who complain that the Lich isn't "cool" in the end sort of miss the point, and I say that as someone who isn't even a big Adventure Time fan.
Evil characters can look cool, but evil itself isn't supposed to be "cool". Evil is ultimately ugly, banal, idiotic, purposeless, and self-defeating. Of course the Lich would be revealed to be pathetic in the end - evil always exhausts and destroys itself when all is said and done, because evil is inherently parasitic in nature and fundamentally irrational. That's why devil figures in practically every mythology are frequently portrayed as foolish, impotent, and miserable, they're at odds with themselves.
The Lich is cool as a character, but as a "person" he was never cool. He's just a big douchebag monster who wants to kill everyone. I can't speak to the rest of the writing flaws of this show, but displaying the vacuity of evil isn't really something I have a problem with.

The Lich could've been cool in what he could've represented. He could've been death, or war, or time, even a more abstract "the end". Any number things is what he could've been. That specific lich only got there because of Simon, who is also the only Simon to lose his Betty to GOLB, and the only Simon who was put in a position to portal to GOLB in the first place (being the only Simon running from the Scarab because he is the only Simon with the F&C verse in his head).
We know that rituals can open portals to Golb's domain, it seems sensible that other Liches have been more motivated to visit Golb in person once their work was done.
If Lich could open a portal on his own he would never have gotten stuck in the time room. Or stranded on a dead Earth.
