Well it's been that way since Season 5 of the original show
He's been turned into a tetris block, wiped from existence, turned into a giant baby, turned into a hand
          He always comes back
They didn't even kill him in the Epilogue series where Finn literally fights him in the afterlife.
And if they ever do bring him back he won't have depression like this Lich because he never won.

Nah this is probably the last time we're seeing him, seeing an alternate universe where he won and the speech he gave to Golb feel very "final" for his character.

We know the Lich succeeded in that Universe WHILE Simon was still Ice King (you see a frame during one of his video tapes where he turns into a skeleton). So whatever Lich did in that universe he did it quite early on. It's just a universe where the Lich won. IIRC he was wished there, so maybe his wish was that he won, which in turn sent him a universe where everyone was killed. I think the hand that was cut off and then went to control new death is all over the multiverse because Jake cut it off and kicked it into that universe portal Ice Finn was making

That's the problem, the writers REALLY don't want a main antagonist, especially one who's not "funny". Everything has to keep up the increasingly out of place LoLrandom kids show vibes and anything serious can only be used for relationship drama or for random 5-second intervals where the show wants to try and show how its actually super edgy and mature.

Did you even watch the show? AT is not lolrandom, it's more thought-through than most of the actual lolrandom episodic shows Cinemaphile creams themselves over. F&C had a serious tone for the majority of it, not to mention that GOLB itself is not funny.

Simon will never move on. Especially after realizing things could have turned out much better if he made better choices with Betty's endless love for him. "You were.....everything"
He won't be suicidal anymore, but depression will return as he stated to the Minerva bot therapist. He'll at least keep his mind on adventures like Adult Finn for a while.

            Anonymous

But I thought the point is that he can't know how things would've turned out if he made different choices?

I dunno man, I'm really burned out on all this Simon/Betty business. If this show has to come back for a second season, I hope it doesn't get brought up again.

              Anonymous

Yeah and that's the really what's the source of the depression. He's somewhat better now after all this soul searching but Simon can't forget a girl like Betty.

Also being burnt out isn't what to take from the Fionna and Cake series, this was suppose to wrap up Simon and Betty's arc with some more closure since the og finale and distant lands were too open ended with it; This arc was built up in small increments since Season 3. I'd say they did a decent job.

Next adventure time series will most likely be ooo 1000 years later, since they gave us some content here in F&C.

              Anonymous

That is the point, yes. Simon and Betty repeatedly made major sacrifices in their obsession for each other, and once elder chaos gods got involved it was too far gone. Betty can't come back anymore, and Simon has to stop trying to sacrifice himself for people he cares about. He doesn't have to prove that he's worthy of living to anyone, most of all himself.

I think it was more GOLB's doing than Betty's. He is Chaos, and a Lich who fulfilled his purpose is effectively useless to a being of chaos. Think about it, threatening all life with extinction will cause chaos, but actually extinguishing all life leaves behind a stagnated chaos-less wasteland. By succeeding in killing all life, Lich outlived his purpose in the eyes of GOLB.

        Anonymous

That just opens up so many questions that will probably never be answered and if they were, it wouldn't be satisfying. How much is the Lich's goals to end all life part of his function or part of his own personal agency? If it was all due to his own volition, how could the "teachings" of the god he worships completely go over his head like that? Unless the writers intend for him to be a Nyarlathotep-like figure in that though he's an incomprehensible evil, he's still prone to human error.

        >introduced as generic but cool skeleton guy
        >later recharacterized as personification of genocide

So many people would make fun of the autists that wanted to see more Mushroom War lore but I bet expanding upon it and how the Lich came to be in the main timeline probably sounds like it would have been the better outcome in hindsight.

              >But how did he know about the primordial monsters?
The Lich inside Sweet P is over 1000 years old. He has had time to research. The Loch goes and seeks out knowledge on his own. The monsters like Orgalorg can talk, and can carry full conversations as can the Lich. You do the math.

                >Sweet P does not say the Loch was from that primordial monster soup
It’s pretty obviously inferred anon. Sweet P says how cosmic monsters are born before time. Then turns into one of those specific monsters and horrified his aggresors.
Also Orgalorg was literally there in that vision of the before-time monsters.

                >Also Orgalorg was literally there in that vision of the before-time monsters.
Yeah but the Lich wasn't. We see 2 monsters from that primordial monster pile. They are both yellow. The both retained their forms. The Lich was a comet. The Lich is not yellow. Neither Orgalorg or Coconteppi ever reincarnated.
                >The Lich goes and seeks out knowledge on his own (like the spell he used on Billy).
                >Coconteppi was on Earth.
                >Coconteppi can talk.

Why would he scare them with a spooky story that has absolutely nothing to do with his scary monster form he then immediately shows them? It’s obvious there’s meant to be a connection between the two actions.

The Lich was born when someone fell into the pile of goo made by the mushroom bomb. We see this happen. It's not implied it's explicit. We literally see it happen when Farmworld Jake falls in.
As for why I don't know. Lich didn't even do anything with the King of Ooo. He just scared him then nothing else.

He wasn’t, and no this episode retroactively retconning past episodes does not change the fact he was always a Lich; a monster; born from the war or born from the monster dimension.

In his first appearance he was literally just some random skeleton wizard minster that billy killed. He was still just this until the citadel episode where they make him out to be some primordial entity.

I really do miss when the Lich was just some fricked up creature spawned from a nuclear war. All this cosmic shit with magic comets, chaos gods and alternate realities made everything so unnecessarily convoluted.

Obsessing over mushroom war lore is definitely autistic but the implication of the Lich being the embodiment of mutually assured destruction that only exists to kill everything is way better than him being a fanboy born from GOLB's breath.
In essence he's perfect as the embodiment of the war itself, the countless amount of lives lost.

        Agreed. But also

        >World is apocalypse because of nuclear war
        >Magic either discovered and weaponised or awakened as result of war
        >Nuclear bomb and magic mix to create living Lich
Is that so hard? Is that so unreasonable?

My headcanon from back in the day was that wizards went out of hiding at some point and revealed the existence of magic, and this somehow led to a war between humans and the wizards. Basically like Harry Potter if it took a turn for the worst. The humans would be greatly outgunned because they'd lack magic, and so they'd turn to nukes. The Lich personifies the destructive power of everything that both factions of mankind created.

I'm surprised they didn't go with this. It seems really obvious once you reveal that there was a secret society of wizards in hiding long before the nuclear war, which happened during Stakes.

The Lich being a follower of Golb makes sense since he seeks to end all life and Golb is the embodiment of destruction. And it's not a retcon, he referred to himself as the last scholar of Golb in Whispers from the original show

What's your lich like? I always get caught up in what they should be wearing. Skeletons are so small that it's pretty difficult to dress them up in anything that fits or looks good on them. I mostly favor simple black robes, but even then...

Something as simple as getting a haircut can make your hat no longer fit your head, so imagine that applied to not having any skin or flesh to speak of, anywhere.

        Anonymous

If your lich isn't wearing the most elaborate robes, decorated in layers of intricate israelitelery designed to represent death and his power then he's just a skinner than usual wizard.

Like at the very least a Lich needs a crown.

Here's his look as soon as the ritual ends. Gonna commission an endgame look later. As for personality, hrs a mage got got to where he is by cheating and stealing. Imagine a Top Grad student who used Quizlet, Cheggs, and AI to become valedictorian.

            Anonymous

The issue there is you can't become a Lich without being a good Wizard. The ritual it demands basically cannot be cast by a low level wizard or it obliterates your soul, that is why Liches are such strong enemies, the ritual magnifies their already outstanding magical ability and turns them into literal forces of nature.

A Lich ritual isn't just one of a few sacrifices, it's commiting an absolute horrific act. sacrificing a cities children, defiling a grove of a unicorn etc etc.

What you're confusing is a Lich for someone who willingly becomes an Undead Mage; there is a reason Liches are end game enemies on par with shit like the Avatar of Tiamat or a Demon Lord manifestation, because Liches are not up and coming wizards who dabble in dark art, they're immortal fricks who have written the BOOKS on Dark Magic.

The issue is power scaling made the Lich into some ancient abstract evil that is an embodiment of genocide... but he still lost to stupid stuff.

The Lich in Mortal Folly is literally a Lich, He's obviously human, but evil and driven, a literal immortal sorceror who is beaten by the hero using love and a little strength to cripple his mortal form.

The Lich being an Abstract alien evil is moronic, he should always have been a dark evil man.

My theory is that Farmworld Jake still has the powers and is half-alien.

Can you imagine how much more terrifying the Lich would have been if he did have those powers though? The writers could have given him

                >A kaiju form
                >The ability to control his dismembered limbs and change their form/size at will

NTA but the "Fall" speech literally goes against his character as detailed in the show's outlines and led to the creation of a worse character and direction for him to go in
Mortal Folly, in spite of it focusing heavily on Ice King, still depicted the Lich as closely as he was intended to be; a destructive force of nature whose only intent is leaving death in his path. It could have been better, but it was a solid introduction to the character and should have led to greater heights rather than turning him into what he eventually became

That first appearance was not only the best Lich but it also mixed in the best ending, with Finn being saved by PB's "i like you finn" sweater. Badass and heartwarming at the same time. Then both of those aspects slowly died over time, with the Lich becoming more of a standard villain to give monologues and PB/Finn's relationship becoming more... whatever the frick it was later where the power of love sweater would never be a thing.

The entire point was to be chill. The rules exist so that bad bits of it can be punished, but beetle jannie was punishing crossovers and people that were causing no harm or issue to the world they lived in. If they're breaking the rules but causing no issues, then be chill.

        This.
Death is orderly; Life is chaotic. How the FRICK did the lich not understand this shit?

Like, even hellraiser got this shit right with Leviathan being an entity of pure order.

          Anonymous

Death is not order, it is the breakdown of order. All life is made up of ordered structures which all serve purposes - a dead universe that has undergone heat death may be uniform BUT it is not orderly because nothing within it serves any purpose. This is the difference.

            Anonymous

Death is the most orderly thing in the universe. Everything that lives, dies. Gets tucked in, put away, broken down into nutrients which fuels the life of other things. Death is the universe’s taxes.
Chaos is inconsistent, biased, unfair. Illogical. Its not cyclical, its not expected. Living creatures are expected to die. Chaos is not to be expected.

              Anonymous

Life is made up of constant infinite mutations, created by random chance. The vast majority of these mutations die or are killed off by the ordered ones, while the ones that serve a purpose continue to exist in an ordered manner.

Evolution, and by extension life, is perpetual chaos, which, due to infinite tries, creates order by dumb luck.
The mere existence of cancer cells, caused by chaotic mutation, in "Ordered" structures proves the inherent chaos in life.

Chaos doesn't exist because we live in a deterministic universe. The future is real and you can predict it. Everything happens for a reason. There is no spontaneous action, everything is preceded by something. The universe is entirely orderly, it's just a very complicated arrangement of atoms and energy; too complicated for us to grasp, but nothing is random. The future is real and you can predict it.

I wonder why the show spent time putting in so much support for Hunter and Huntress Wizard's philosophy. It essentially all but tells us that the hunter's mindset is the key to understanding the secrets of this universe. What an odd bit of subtext given that the show has next to nothing to do with any version of HW.

Imo they're probably building her up for some future series, Hunter had as big of a role, if not bigger than Marshall and Gary in the finale. He was basically treated as the "fifth main character", makes me feel like they're gonna do something involving her in the future

        Anonymous

What really tipped me off was that they brought back the dandelion symbol that Hunter showed Fionna in the first episode but this time as a representation of their entire universe. That has some pretty obvious implications about Hunter's world view.

Her wish is to keep Simon Safe.

Then again, she most likely relinquishing her own existence (spirit and all) now that she content that Simon is fully fulfilled and Fionna's world is saved. Remember Margles, Magic (now King) Man's wife? When she was eaten by Golb, she was erased completely, soul included. It's the reason why she's absent from the dead worlds across the multiverse and why Prismo can't bring her back.

If you really wanted to worship a god of chaos occasionally you would just stop worshiping them before starting up again. Like one day out of the blue you leave and become a cop for 5 years settle down meet a girl life a simple life. Simon impregnate Golbetty in front of Lich

GOLB is the embodiment of chaos, not destruction. Destruction increases entropy, but once everything is gone there's no more chaos to be had. In achieving perfection, the Lich failed in his service to his god. He needed to practice moderation.

      Anonymous

You’re trying to be sound deep but failing. Life, both scientifically and in philosophy, is diametrically opposed to entropy and decreases net entropy by nature. It’s fun to think life is chaotic but by its nature we are one of the few systems that decreases entropy, “Chaos” increases with loss of life, no matter the amount.

        Anonymous

Anon you're not getting it. If there is no life then chaos cannot be spread anymore. Chaos becomes stagnant. The Lich reached the heat death of his universe, and GOLB was not happy.

“Chaos” aka random chance exists as long as there are atoms causing eachother to act inconsistently via conflicting nuclear fields.

          Jesus Christ Adventuretimegays…
That is not what “chaos” means and not what “heat death” means. Chaos is the turning of a s ystem from orderly from disorderly, and the entire universe is chaotic by default in Newton’s 2nd law. Lifeforms are the opposite, we take disorderly stray particles and make ourselves more complex and orderly. Life exists in a state where it decreases entropy within itself.
Chaos does not mean “acting randumb and quirky”, it means disorder, and your particles are much more disorderly when you’re rotting.

Akshually, *entropy* is the measure of how disorderly a system is. Chaos, at least in physics, is used to describe a system with highly unpredictable, seemingly random behaviour. They're not interchangeable terms.

The Lich succeeded in his purpose. His god simply never wanted him to. He was created to create chaos, like adding an antagonist to a story to make it more exciting. You don't want them to win but want them to want to win

did i miss something, or was there ever any implication that golb gave a frick about the lich and wouldn't have done the exact same thing to him in any reality regardless of his case? betty being present in him probably gave him enough of a conscience to realize he was inherently bound to be a fricking dumbass by his nature to spread chaos through death and tetromino'd his bony ass for being a cosmic geek

      Anonymous

Some part of me thinks that GOLB blocked the Lich because the Betty part of GOLB recognized the Lich as something that threatened Simon, and she eliminated it.

        Anonymous

i'm not sure if he was even a threat to him at that point. the lich himself admits he lost all purpose in successfully annihilating all life, leaving him begging for meaning at the hands of a god that opposes that notion by its very existence. simon summarizes it well enough in the finale that chaos, in golb's own language, is the annihilation of *purpose* along with order, empty calories and all. you're probably right though that regardless, the lich would have tried to return to old habits and technically threaten simon again

The tetriminos surrounded GOLB before betty was a factor. I think its just something GOLB does.

So why the frick DOES the Lich want to kill all life if killing all life just made him depressed and didn’t even seem to please his eldritch sugar daddy? What the frick was his endgame?

      Anonymous

He was without a purpose after achieving what he wanted. So he fell into depression. What's the point of mass destruction if your worshiped god doesn't appreciate it and it doesn't give you the satisfaction you wanted?

      Anonymous

The Lich is essentially a machine created to fulfill a specific purpose of bringing about destruction. When that purpose is fulfilled, he is summoned to GOLB and given his ultimate reward - an eternity of nothing. He was never meant to continue existing past the moment he fulfills his goal, which is why he breaks down and demands a meaning for his existence.

  49. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

Someone else already said this but I love the way GOLB communicates. Instead of using words or even telepathy, it literally rips your mind out of your body and sends it to alternate realities to convey a message. Lovecraft would be proud.

I like that part in the finale when after Betty fused with GOLB it turned into a monochrome amorphous mass of lines as it reformed into GOLBetty. Just something so cosmologically unusual even other eldritch entities like Orgalorg can't compare.

People are complaining about this, but I mean, this is the endpoint for "extinguish all life and being about nothingness" Nihilism (more like Fatalism? Extinctionism? Not really just Nihilism, kill and destroy everything). This is true whether it's Magic Shit or just Metaphor for Nuclear Extinction.

Like congratulations, everything is dead, or even Heat Death of the Universe, or whatever. A sentient being even continuing to exist is antithetical to that. And there's nothing else to so.

I don't know if The Lich MISUNDERSTOOD. Maybe just actually experiencing pointless, meaningless nothingness is different from the quest to bring it about. Consciousness is pointless and only painful at the point. I don't know if The Lich stays conscious after he becomes a block or if he's inanimate.

Lich once says to Finn "You've bested me in many worlds". How would he know that? It'd only be possible if they were all a hive-mind, and it makes sense because they're all copies of a hand of the same Farmworld Lich

            Anonymous

The Lich hand from Farmworld seemed to have the same memories and consciousness as the Lich that originally appeared in the series and whose body became Sweet P; in “Whispers” the hand calls the original Lich “me” and views Sweet P as his “son”, and also appears to be aware of everything that all of the alternate versions of himself are doing.

Also in “Together Again” he remembers everything that Finn did to all of his various incarnations.

Yeah, I thought it was a little lame such a being could get "down in the dumps". The Lich isn't human, he desires nothing but the extinction of all life, which is as far away as you can get from human notions. It's not the same as getting your dream job or finally getting a speedrunning world record so the "getting want I wanted leaves me empty" trope seems odd. If they gave more time into humanising the Lich (which I don't think they should do as for the reasons above) maybe it would be more palatable but I think they just wanted to use him a vessel for analogy. It would've made more sense if he sought his own destruction after he suceeded, really he should've simply sought going to other universes and ending life there the second Simon showed up from another universe. I thought he was gonna jump into simon's head for a second (although just killing simon would've given the same result)

It worked because after all these years that's one of the few new things you can do with the character. Also fitting for a show where the main characters lived for only one goal instead of appreciating what was there in the first place. He paralleled Simon's crazy quest very nicely.

To bring death to all is to create stillness, stillness is emptiness, emptiness is a scale with no weight. Therefore, no conflict is the exact absence of chaos.

    The Lich knows nothing

that's not what chaos means at all, and both times Golb appears it killed people and was trying to destroy everything in existence and erase all of reality.

Chaos and entropy are often lumped together

Chaos is a wheel of experiences, randomness, and a cycle of life and death. When The Lich killed his universe, he effectively stopped chaos. Chaos isn't good or evil, merely constant change

          Anonymous

Life has nothing to do with chaos, and is antithetical to it. The universe is pretty chaotic with asteroids being smashed by other asteroids and stars collapsing into black holes, and most of it has no life at all.

            Anonymous

But an intent to kill is lawful. There is a difference between random chance destroying and a being setting out SPECIFICALLY to kill.

As such, the complete extinction of life is lawful as it caused solely by a thinking (and therefore semi-orderly) entity.

It is not the death of life but the killing of life that bring chaos. The Lich simply did not understand that the best way to serve Golb is to carve a path of death across the universe or to carve a path of life across the universe by fricking and siring new possibilities in heirs. it seems like he plays the role of a "General Manager".
Second to the boss in terms of authority.

And even Scarab was afraid of him, so he must be quite powerful.

        Anonymous

Scarab wasn't that "powerful" powerful, he was only powerful because he existed in the corporate hiearchy.

Like Prismo was a literal god being who was scared of the scarab, but by contrast Fiona and Winter king could beat the scarab. This is because its like having a boss in real life, its not about "Can I punch my boss out?" Its about "this is my literal boss"
just like in real life, if you just murder your boss, you're going to get the cops coming to kick down your door or you'll be fired if you just try and punch them out.
Hence you don't have to be super powerful to be feared, because if you're higher up in the corporate chain you can tell the boss boss (And presumably there's higher level reality beings that make prismo's powers look like nothing), and they'll deal with you.

I kind of feel like people who complain that the Lich isn't "cool" in the end sort of miss the point, and I say that as someone who isn't even a big Adventure Time fan.

Evil characters can look cool, but evil itself isn't supposed to be "cool". Evil is ultimately ugly, banal, idiotic, purposeless, and self-defeating. Of course the Lich would be revealed to be pathetic in the end - evil always exhausts and destroys itself when all is said and done, because evil is inherently parasitic in nature and fundamentally irrational. That's why devil figures in practically every mythology are frequently portrayed as foolish, impotent, and miserable, they're at odds with themselves.

The Lich is cool as a character, but as a "person" he was never cool. He's just a big douchebag monster who wants to kill everyone. I can't speak to the rest of the writing flaws of this show, but displaying the vacuity of evil isn't really something I have a problem with.

Oh spare me the 2-bit philosophy, Plato.

The Lich could've been cool in what he could've represented. He could've been death, or war, or time, even a more abstract "the end". Any number things is what he could've been. It would've been interesting to explore how different characters grapple with any of those concepts, interact with them, fight against them, or fuel them, communicated through how they interact with the character. The Lich COULD HAVE been cool.

What you're saying is incredibly reductive to storytelling, and unfortunately, what we ended up getting. Just a douchebag monster who wants to kill everyone.

GOLB is likely only influenced by Betty's psyche when dealing with Simon. Otherwise it's just regular GOLB to everyone else. Simon lost his fiance and gained an elder chaos god as a spirit guardian, who will remember him for eternity, long after he dies and turns to dust.

Why would the other blocks be others liches? That specific lich only got there because of Simon, who is also the only Simon to lose his Betty to GOLB, and the only Simon who was put in a position to portal to GOLB in the first place (being the only Simon running from the Scarab because he is the only Simon with the F&C verse in his head).

              Anonymous

We know that rituals can open portals to Golb's domain, it seems sensible that other Liches have been more motivated to visit Golb in person once their work was done.

If Lich could open a portal on his own he would never have gotten stuck in the time room. Or stranded on a dead Earth.

I didn't say he could do it on his own, the portals we see require resources. Resources not available in the Time Room.

Give me an exact replica of your TV Remote that has all of the same functionality, infinite power supply that is contained within the remote, is unbreakable, is bound to me in a way where I always have access to it (for example, in my fricking arm or whatever or can be teleported back to me at a moments notice by pressing a button on my arm that takes mild pressure to activate) and can enduce tolerable invincibility (i.e. I cannot be harmed by anything, though if there are few entities that can override this restriction it should tell me) to myself by pressing a button on the remote that doesn't replace any of the buttons of the remote and is in a somewhat annoying spot that I can access and use perfectly fine but it is just a bit awkward.

The best way to counterbalance potentially disasterous monkey paws is to add a clause that creates an effect that provides some inconvenience but is vastly preferable to everything fricking up.
And be ready for a big loophole you weren't autistic enough to consider fricks you over

I just- I just couldn't prove it. He- he covered his tracks, he got that idiot with the crown to fuse with him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That extinction event! Are you telling me that a Catalyst Comet just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! GOLB! He dropped a Mushroom Bomb! And I served him! And I shouldn't have. I became his own scholar! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since there were monsters, always the same! Couldn't keep his chaos out of the multiverse! But not our GOLB! Couldn't be precious GOLB! Stealing those blocks! And HE gets to be an elder god?! What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you- you have to stop him! You...

had to be the Lich's most terrifyingly awesome speech.

Seriously though, the Farmworld Lich's introduction because getting to see how a Lich is born was pretty cool and it also lets you have fun imagining what kinds of Liches there are across the multiverse depending on what thing or person gets hit by the bomb.

He's still rockin' the voice but the Lich sounds somewhat off to me for some reason. Not that it's bad but it almost sounds like the most high-pitched and even somewhat normal the character has ever sounded in his entire history. Then again like you just said, the script sounds like something for an entirely different character so you're probably right about the writing being more to blame for what I'm feeling over Perlman's performance. Also, at this exact point, I can't unhear All for One's dub voice.

It hardly a trick. Wyatt fricked himself because he couldn't ignore some beeping that wasn't really Prismo's fault. That's like, textbook monkey's paw.

Maybe I'll do it one day.. I sometimes forget that the lich just kinda looks like a lich anyway. It'll be a while before that eventually, and I doubt I'll ever post it, but I guess there's no reason not to try.

You should make a fan-comic about the first days of the Lich rising from the world after the bomb. If you're interested in internet points, it's usually wise to start with fan-art anyways to build up a following.

I wouldn't really mind if I died without anyone but me ever seeing my art, so I probably won't do that unless I get a huge burst of inspiration.
