The whole reason why the ending of the first game is so memorable to people who play it is because it mirrors the beginning. Joel is cradling Ellie in the same way he was cradling Sarah in the beginning. The whole of the game is Joel's journey of achieving salvation for his failure. The rob Joel of this in the show with how they wrote it.
