the difference is that there's literally a dark side and a light side to the force, as well as a neutral one. the force is the essence of all life, the light creates while the dark destroys. you need both for a balanced universe

      Anonymous

      >you need both for a balanced universe
incorrect. the force is like a river. the light side is the current, the dark side is a dam
you can only balance it by removing the dam

    >What exactly is "the Force?"
The force is a cosmic energy force that surrounds all living things. Everything acts independently but it's all linked to this field in the end. It takes inspiration from various eastern origins such as Taoism's "The Path", Chi, or interconnectedness in Buddhism.
    >what distinguishes the light side from the dark side
The dark side twists this life force for their own selfish nefarious purposes disrupting the natural order. What some people somehow don't get is the very nature of the dark side causes imbalance and "balance to the force" means there are 0 dark side users since they're buttholes who abuse this all encompassing energy for self gain.

Correct, "Light Side" is just people not understanding the setting. There is no Light Side, just the Force and the Dark Side of the Force.

The is exactly what yoda said it was. Its an energy that connects all matter in the universe.

It's possible that it's Nikola Tesla's theory on Ether. He believed we could harness energy out of thin air.

He was really good at hiding himself. If he ever lost his temper or was too preoccupied around Jedi the Dark Side started leaking out though. Obi-Wan actually felt it in one novel. Palpatine was agitated during an attempted assassination, and Kenobi reached out to grab him and usher him to safety while Anakin held off the assassin, and he describes in his inner thoughts feeling for a brief moment an absolute black, depthless abyss of pain, misery, and horror like a reflection of pure darkness. He loses his grip, grabs him again, and feels nothing, so he dismisses it as his imagination.

Other times, other Jedi also felt darkness around Palpatine. But it felt like the greed, lust, desire, and shit you feel from ANY politician. Hiding as a politician was the best decision Palpatine made.

The guy was deep in the political arena. Any bad vibes coming form the senate building was probably hand-waved as politicians just doing their usual shifty antics during a time of mass civil unrest and warfare.
The Jedi don't even lift a finger about open slave markets, let alone bother with greedy schemes of senators.

The Light Side doesn't exist. It's just The Force and the Dark Side of The Force.

    >The Force is meant to evoke multiple different ideas: God, Chi, Brahman, The Path, Zen, Tao, the Source (Wall), etc.

The Dark Side of the Force is rooted in the material and primal. It is not really "evil" so much as it is something you must grow out of and ascend from, lest you become spiritually corrupt and descend into cruelty. When someone abuses the Force, the Dark Side emerges to return that suffering.

The Jedi are able to become one with The Force because they achieve enlightenment without desire or want. The Sith are corrupted by the Dark Side by their ascension being motivated by selfish desire. By demanding more from The Force, the Dark Side fricks them up as consequence.

    >The Force is basically a "pure" thing, and passive, while the Dark Side is aggressive. The Dark Side is natural to the Force, a shadow cast by the light.

The force is originally based on a mythicist concepts that's known in many cultures and religions under different names, like "cosmos" or "dharma". That was before the prequels and their midichlorian bullcrap.
For the best explanation of that more mythic force, unironically watch The Last Jedi. Yes, the one manchildren hate so much.

the last jedi doesn't explain shit about the force
and face it, the setup for midichlorians is within the OT as well you stupid Black person. the best explanation is the first explanation that obi-wan gave luke. it's an energy form that permeates all living material in the known universe. the midichlorians don't magically ruin the philosophy behind it.

        >the last jedi doesn't explain shit about the force
It doesn't "explain shit" in the sense that a prequelgay like you thinks explanations work. What you expect is "lore" behind it, like Lucas' midichlorians and Whills and other such fantasy bullshit. That shows your limited intellectual capacity and lack of education.
Mythicism, pure spiritualism and even hard academic philosophy don't work in terms of lore and history (but many religions do that to appeal to idiots like yourself). They work in terms of concepts, and in terms of ontology, the understanding of the world via those concepts. The force in the OT is such a concept, as are the ones that have come from non-fictional sources (cosmos, dharma, etc.), and can only be understood as such. Your fricking midichlorians don't explain what the force is, they just satsify your lorehomosexualry.
        >the setup for midichlorians is within the OT

there is nothing, i repeat NOTHING in the last jedi that adds to the mythos of the force whatsoever. luke tells rey to breathe in and tell him what she feels, she feels the dark and light sides of the force working in balance to co-exist. that's fricking it. there is no depth, no fundamental reimagining, no greater enlightenment. it's accompanied by some nice visual shots of the island and ultimately achieves nothing for either the story or the viewer. have a nice day right fricking now you homosexual ass disney defender.

you don't need to tell me that, i already knew that's how midichlorians worked. it's the disney adults and OT gatekeepers that think the force is now a microscopic blood cell.

when phantom menace released there was much confusion about what midichlorians exactly were despite it being spelled out in the film. there are many people who go to see a movie in the theater and legitimately turn their brain off. these are the people who harassed ahmed best and jake lloyd because they have no understanding of anything that isn't directly in front of them.

The energy that linked every biological life-form. Most people can't feel it, some can feel it, some people are able to manipulate it.

all these answers are dumb. there is only the force, there is no light or dark. they are false concepts used by the jedi. using the force as intended without the misplaced restrictions of the jedi is called the dark side of the force. perhaps they call it dark as a mockery to the infantile propaganda that is the jedi "light" side of the force. perhaps the call it dark because it is the hidden side of the force.

Good and evil. Positive emotions and thoughts, negative emotions and thought. There is the Force, and there is the dark side of the Force. The dark side is a corruption of the Force. Contrary to what videogame homosexuals tell you there's no "grey side" and balance is not about finding a halfway point. You're either good, or you're not. All the force users who try to LARP as enlightened centrists in the canon end up on the dark side.

It is a spice found in the sands of the planet Arrakis that can be inhaled or ingested by humans. Added to food, it can provide medicinal benefits, like extending people’s lives or enhancing their senses. When inhaled, it can inspire psychedelic episodes for certain susceptible minds. The moment that Paul inhales a cloud of spice coincides with the moment that his Sight awakens and he begins seeing future events and hearing voices with more clarity.

IIRC the force is good its just the powers it grants can be used for bad its like a gun basically whoever uses it decides it nature. The thing is which the movies showed sometimes even people who think there using it for good(jedi academy thinking there the be all say all in every matter) can be bad and the people that are bad(sith destroying the Jedi) can be good. The force directs everything(God) and to the Jedi it seemed like it abandoned them when they were part of the biggest problem of all they chose to only think the force was great when they were at peak power and lost faith when that same power destroyed them not realizing that its good(God is good even if you dont understand it in your limited perspective)all the time.

"Dark Side" = using the force selfishly; to gain power; psychopathic usage.
"Light Side" = using the force in accordance with Jedi religion; altruistically; keeping balance.
