he had severe anxiety over jimmy becoming a lawyer. he couldn't be honest with himself about how he felt so he attributed it to electricity, this grew over time to the point where if he thought he was surrounded by electricity it would trigger a panic attack. why he attributed it to electricity I don't know.

      > why he attributed it to electricity I don't know.
It's a convenient excuse for him to isolate himself from the world, electricity is everywhere.

Imagine being an autist mogged on everything by your little bro. From friends and girls down to your mum plain liking him more. The only thing you're good at is THE LAW.
And suddenly, turns out the c**t that was born lucky is good at that too. He felt completely like shit.

He hated seeing his younger scumbag brother achive success so quickly. Especially since he had earned his degree, built his firm and paid his dues while Jimmy didn't.

He was a millionaire while Jimmy was working out of nail salon. It's like being a an NBA player and getting pissy your loser brother is shooting hoops at the park

It was a dick move that he just let Jimmy flounder like that, and I say this as someone who thinks he was completely justified (though he should have been honest up front) not letting Jimmy join HHM.
Like, at least vouch for Jimmy, or help him specialize. Lots you can do without being a nepotist.

          >at least vouch for Jimmy
His whole concern was that Jimmy was unethical, why would he vouch for him?

yeah, resorting to skullduggery and scheming was a mistake. it should've just been a direct conversation:
          >"Hey Jimmy, I'm not going to endorse you for HHM because you stole from our parents and constantly broke the law. I'm sorry but that's the way it is."

          >at least vouch for Jimmy
His whole concern was that Jimmy was unethical, why would he vouch for him?

Jimmy was an excellent public defender and showed real talent and heart when it came to defending the elderly. he had a place in law, but not at a celebrity firm with millions of dollars on the line.

            >because you stole from our parents and constantly broke the law
Doesn't even need to be that personal.
            >Jimmy, the board and I reviewed your application, and we're afraid you're just not HHM material. I'd love to give you a boost, but you know how that'd look."
HHM unironically never owed Jimmy a job, aside from knowing Chuck he was just another applicant.

he was smart enough to convince other people that his delusions were real

he was too dogmatic, and could only see things through the lens of procedure and propriety. he was powerless against anyone who flaunted procedure.

He was driven insane by the fact that his little brother the scumbag was better than him at a ton of things. He was unwilling to allow his brother to become a real lawyer out of fear that Jimmy would best him in that field as well.
You can see how badly it fricks with him when his ex-wife prefers Jimmy's company to his own. The difference being that Jimmy never acted like a condescending prick to her.
Chuck dedicated himself to legal autism at the cost of all else. In his old age he realized that he should have been trying to be a good man rather than a good lawyer. Jimmy, for all his other faults, was trying to be better, Chuck thought he was already better than everyone, so he never bothered to change.
Symbolism in his death, the lantern (his intelligence) that lit his world and made the dark less frightening became the very thing that burned it everything down, because he cared nothing about himself, only about how other people saw him.
