I don't really care for R&M beyond a certain point, but I think the fan whiplash was pretty odd. There was never any evidence that he did the things people claimed, but everyone still jumped on the train.

The problem with him isn't that he's a sex pest or that he's too edgy. it's that he's obnoxious to be around. Look at spacey and roman polanski who are complete monsters but they do great work and they only predate on people who don't interrupt the set. They lasted for decades before it got to be too much. He got tossed into the bin because the people working with him hated him already and just wanted a public reason to distance themselves from him.
I can't help but constantly think about how these dudes did what Roiland failed to do. They brought their web cartoon gimmicks to a much bigger TV platform and lowered down the ladder for all their internet pals in a cartoon that fully indulges in their weird sense of humor that's somehow more welcoming because of how chill and positive it can be. Sure, Roiland made bank off of Rick and Morty, but his gimmick wore thin real quickly and Harmon's near-opposite sensibilities took over entirely. Meanwhile Zach & Michael know exactly what NOT to do, and their silly cartoon formula literally can't fail since they both seem committed to not taking things too seriously but still putting in the work with their crew. Smilng Friends ACTUALLY can't happen without them, but they seem fully hands-on with every episode beginning to end. They remind me of Doc & Jackson but with full network support.

Dan Harmon is a good show runner and writer. Justin Roiland just does a couple funny voices. He's super fricking over rated.
