Boston bombing saga, from the police dispatch of the shooting at MIT all the way to the whole manhunt. That one was a treat. Arguably peak /misc/ before it became a loony bin.

Yeah that shit was wild. There were MIT students giving updates and then I was seeing it on the news some time later.

One for me is I remember first hearing about the Port Arthur massacre as it was developing on the radio. prior to the siege. I was 14 and lived in Hobart so knew some affected families. Not much internet back then so it was all tv and radio.

Do any of you old fricks remember when the police arrived at his house and the moron news correspondent says "looks like they're bringing in the K-9 unit" but it's just his neighbor's dog at the gate?

    Michael Jackson's death

Michael Jackson's death was the biggest news story ever, and i lived through it. People i knew were crying, my parents were glued to the television all week, even at school teachers let us stay inside all of the kids gathered around the computers and we watched his music videos. The internet genuinely didn't function when he died, every site crashed.

I don't think anything will ever be comparable to the worldwide state of mourning this put people in

I went to bed with it having happened, when it was 'extent unknown'. Got up next day and they were waiting for Tony Blair to give a statement about her death. Could not have been a bigger story about one person.

I remember pretty much every happening from 1997 on. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Columbia exploding, and the Virgin Tech Massacre stand out in particular for some reason. Also Sandy Hook because I was on vacation at Universal Studios when that happened.

      >Columbia exploding
This is about Challenger, but you reminded me. I have wondered for a long time if I saw Challenger explode live on TV. Just properly checked up on it, and I must have been watching when the footage first aired (in bong) 20 minutes later. I'll never forget what the separating booster rockets looked like.

Other than the ones already mentioned in the thread: the 2015 Bataclan attacks (and Charlie Hebdo earlier that year), the Turkish coup attempt in 2016, the Arab Spring protests in Egypt, the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 and Brexit vote in 2016, the announcement of Bin Laden's death,

Because it defied all sense of logic to, as the past two years have proven. Russia's ramshackle military going in on a near-peer neighboring power that has the same training and relative tech level as they do? A recipe for a high butcher's bill and a slow war.
