I liked it when I first watched it, but while catching bits of a few episodes while a friend was watching later on, I was struck by how many long scenes there were of characters walking in silence
Not sure if I would enjoy it as much if I watched again

I like it as a story of a man finding meaning in life. Nice mecha designs other than the stupid magazine on the machine gun, memorable characters and settings.
I didn't like how the later series just took the abnormal survivor bit too seriously and make Chirico a literal god amongst men.

      >He is still walking on the surface of Sansa kek
The only thing I remember from the Sansa arc is the walking and the fight with Epsilon, it was a pretty bad arc in the TV series.

Rewatched it last year and still loved it. I can tell the creators just wanted to throw all the cool shit they liked into one series and let it be as cool and as messy as it would end up being. Really fun ride.

        >it was a pretty bad arc in the TV series.
        Couldn't disagree more.
For me the arcs are 3>2>4>1. They really did a lot with Chirico's character and backstory in the sunsa arc. Not only did they have Chirico actually facing his PTSD/past with the vengeful widow and the combat montage at the start of the arc but it probably had the best fights of the show with Ypsilon being much more entertaining as a rival than he was on Kummen.
The real snoozer arc is the last one when he's traveling around Quent.

IMO Sunsa had one of the nicest scenes in any anime I've seen, Chirico building the makeshift chair for Fyana and carrying her on his back across the desert. The imagery was so romantic and with so little dialogue managed to capture the depth of Chirico and Fyana's relationship.

It was a cool ride, while i didnt like the last arc as much as the rest of the show it still was enjoyable. Last Red Shoulder, Big Battle and Origin Of Ambition OVAs also were good, practically those were just longer episodes of the original show. Mellowlink was badass and it shown that VOTOMS doesnt need to be centered around Chirico.
Sadly Shining Heresy shits on the original series ending, while animation and action were quite good it teared out Chirico from his space coffin and it killed his waifu making original show almost pointless. And then Alone Again kicked plot back again to status quo and Phantom Arc was just nostalgia bait rehashing original series, well atleast Coconna design was cool.
Votoms Finder literally only has VOTOMS in name, it doesnt belong in this series. Case;Irvine was ok but that last mecha fight was for me too much over the top compared to general standard of VOTOMS battles.
Eh i wish that they explored other sides of VOTOMS setting like in Mellowlink, maybe series focused on battling, something from Balarant point of view etc. but no they had to make everything centered about Chirico and then they fricked up his story.

I'm going through shining heresy now but I was put off after getting spoiled on it and some of the later Chirico focused OVAs due to premises and plot points.

Perfect Mech design, stories are hit or miss, characters are dece.

I watched all of this save for Irvine and Finder recently; the OVA and Mellowlink were the most enjoyable.
Sunsa was a big tone shift and Quent was clearly rushed, but it was still fun even when things stretched out of science fiction and into science fantasy. The mecha designs are excellent and I never got tired of the VRRREEEE grinding as they skated around.
Red Shoulder Document was well animated, but I dislike what it did for the story at large and how they made Chirico's luck go from unusual to a blatant superpower. Pailsen Files was generally uninteresting and the 3d animations lacked a lot of weight that I liked about the 2d animation. Shining Heresy was weak all around outside of Chirico's characterization, and I loathe how it stole his happy ending away. Phantom Arc also hammed it up, but since it's at the very end of the story, it didn't bother me quite as much. Aside from the fanservice, it felt like a "what if" scenario for what a fully fleshed-out Quent arc might look like. They also fixed up the animation quite a bit.

If I wanted more real robot media like VOTOMS, what could I try next? Layzner was ok, couldn't get into Gundam Zeta.

    don't watch the latest series.

Chirico is somehow awaken from cold storage, and forced to see fiona fly in space and pass by his planet like a meteor. Extremely depressing.
He could have floated endlessly with her, finally being allowed a soldier's rest.

      Anonymous

He doesn't even look at her. She already died in Shining Heresy. After watching SH first, I think Phantom Arc actually did a pretty good job of unfricking everything SH did wrong.

Shining Heresy sucks eggs for killing Fyana off, but the other arcs resolve well enough and there was still room for him to have a happy ending or at least to raise a kid together instead of going back to sleep.

Say what you will about Heresy and Finder but at least they tried to give us something new. The rest of the series just stuck with the OG's mecha, protagonist, setting, plot devices and music. They could only be assed to make a new opening theme for Pailsen Files, and even that uses the same eyecatch music, variants of the Scopedog, Fatty and Tortoise, and the Chirico immortality bullshit. Nothing wrong with the OG's elements if they stayed in the original. Do something new goddamnit. It's exactly what Disney did, giving the sequel trilogy TIEs and X-Wings to pander to the original trilogy fans. Except at least Disney tried to redesign those a bit, unlike Sunrise.

VOTOMS has never been adapted well past its original series, everything subsequent including Mellowlink looks quite off. The low-tech look of everything really suits the old animation style and the best its ever looked is in the 80s OVAs, but everything made after looks very vacant and sparse. I think what I'm trying to say is, everything from the mecha to the character designs was perfectly-constructed for TV animation, but none of those elements ever seemed to work in anything that was made in the 90s onwards.

I can't say I dislike it, I liked the designs and the settings for Finder but I don't really recall the story being that interesting or memorable because it's only about 40 minutes long. The OVA was pretty forgettable to the point that I only remember the main character's AT and almost nothing else. The designs and settings are also the most exotic compared to the other 2 OVAs released around that time and I guess people wanted more of the "traditional votoms".

I think the final boss AT in Irvine is probably the most out of place design in the whole franchise, they tried too hard at arming the ATs in Irvine

Actually, my take on Votoms fans is that they are a group who watch anime because of their trouble interpreting social behavior. Over-exaggerated emotional responses are common for anime characters to have, which Votoms fans are drawn to due to their developmental disorders (possibly autism), as without this expositional spoonfeeding they would likely become confused over simple character interactions; this phenomena is then further highlighted by their hyper-interest in a genre concerning machines and robots, which they relate to more due to their lack of humanity and uber-technical nature.
Regarding Votoms itself, look at its main character, Chirico.
Chirico barely emotes which subliminally makes the Ryosuke fan feel at ease due to his own similar emotional disability (again, same reason why they like mecha in the first place). Chirico’s monotone facial expression is of great benefit to the Votoms fan due to their regular struggle with reading faces. Past Chirico, the villains in Votoms are two-dimensionally evil and Chirico's sidekicks are the aforementioned anime histrionics which comforts the autist, allowing Chirico to be the Votoms fan’s self-insert in an easy-to-comprehend world.
Meanwhile, Tomino animes terrify the Votoms fan because of their subtle and spontaneous nature, which makes the autist ask “what the frick is going on?” when they often say the same thing to themselves about real life.
Do not fail to see that much of /m/ is as low-functioning as /mlp/ or /vp/, it's just they're quieter in their madness due to their introversion, hence why they feel kinship to the quiet buzz of machines yet have trouble understanding Tomino's scripts that 10-year-old Japanese kids can understand easily. Ironic, Tomino's shows are about "understanding", yet many grown adult men can barely understand them.

      Anonymous

Based. Tomino's writing is the perfect way to gauge if someone's a man-child midwit or not. A great way to gauge their range for different storytelling techniques as well.
Tomino's witting is just farther proof that weebs in general (in the west at least) are just grown ass children on a mental level.

Very moody, well rounded. too many recap episodes, very good soundtrack. Always appreciate that Chirico NEVER breaks from being a stoic loner even when he's surrounded by his friends.

      >too many recap episodes
This isn't a thing, you can just skip them because they are actual recap episodes and not "we made the recap episode into a normal episode so you can't skip it but you are stuck seeing what happened previously anyways".

Yeah, I know you can skip them, just don't think they needed to be there in the first place. Its almost every 5 episodes iirc.

Not really. Episodes 20 and 28 recapped Uoodo while 40 recapped Sunsa before the beginning of the Quent arc. The Kummen arc never got a recap episode.

Votoms TV + Last Red Shoulder is as good as it gets. Big Battle and Mellowlink were quality side stories, but Roots of Ambition was the start of increasingly questionable developments concerning Chirico's past and powers. Shining Heresy's production problems and divisive storyline really was the end of old Votoms. Chirico's story was essentially over and in a way Votoms died with Fyana. Thirteen years later, Pailsen Files almost felt like a franchise reboot that narratively and tonally picked up where Roots of Ambition left off. Phantom Arc and Alone Again served as little more than nostalgia trips, but looking back they were a really sweet sendoff for Votoms and everyone who was involved in its production. Despite the sequels being superfluous, they're still enjoyable mecha anime. With Yanaga, Tomita and Shioyama having passed away, it's the end of an era. It's sad to know there will never be more stories by the original cast and crew, but what they did make is truly special.

      Anonymous

pretty much nailed the thoughts i clumsily wrote about earlier ITT

Layzner was ok, couldn't get into Gundam Zeta.

and gave me a lot more context to its value in terms of production / staff.
      thanks anon

Wish Blue Knight Berserga got the anime treatment, would at least give the fans more of what they want then the spin-off animes have. Votoms really would benefit by going back to its roots, stop focusing solely on Chirico, and bringing back more of the hard sci-fi and jarhead elements. Seems like the series in general is kind of in limbo these days

Not really, it's a breath of fresh air when they change the setting and robots up at the beginning of each arc but the characterization is pretty weak outside of vanilla and the action never gets more interesting or elaborate, it's always just chirico using his aimbot to blast a gorillion goons. It does have a lot of interesting stuff especially towards the end but it's too slow and repetitive for 50 episodes. Give Mellowlink a try.

Anyways, there's persistent rumors that they had originally intended to do more episodes but had the total count reduced at the last moment. Same rumors suggest that they originally planned to have Fyana survive somehow but considering they stuck with her being dead in Alone Again and Phantom Chapter I'm not entirely sure how much the rumor is based on any facts.

Wiseman did not interfere during battle, he just manipulated datas and information in order to attract Chirico and his enemies at different places.

I interpreted it as Wiseman ensuring that Chirico's encounters were possible to win and lead him to Quent; the insane luck and aptitude were all Chirico's overman privileges otherwise.
There's a recurring theme across the whole series of the villain of the arc testing if Chirico really is superhuman and then getting both confirmation and btfo, so it fits the formula to see it this way.

It's a Zwerg light AT from one of the Japanese PS1 games, unsure which.

Cool mechanical designs but unwatchable because slow 70s anime. Same with 0079. If there is condensed movie version I'll try watching that.

It is. The Soldier Blue rip that I found was higher quality though. Ever heard of Soulseek?

Recently finally got off my ass to watch it (I kept forgetting to continue on my first watch and stopped halfway) and it's awesome. Like everyone else said, lots of walking scenes or running scenes or silent staring scenes like anime at the time used to have, which kind of killed the pacing. Didn't bother watching any specials other than Mellowlink and Last Red Shoulder, even though I absolutely love Shining Heresy's OP and ED.

VOTOMS is definitely one of my favourite mecha shows, I love the mecha designs, the cast, and the music (the OST is easily one of the best mecha OSTs of all time). The only thing I didn't really love when I watched it was the ending, and by that I mean the epilogue of Chirico and Fyana freezing themselves. I don't know why, but it was a very unsatisfying ending to me. In retrospect I don't mind it at all though.
I watched and liked a majority of the side content, including Case;Irvine and Finder. Shining Heresy is very middle of the road and Phantom Arc blows mega-ass by rehashing the exact same shit. I'm going to be honest, I didn't care for Mellowlink at all. It was cool at first but the allure of a guy on foot shooting down mecha was lost on me by like the third or fourth episode, and I didn't really care for the cast at all. I mean, Mellowlink isn't really very interesting of a character, and I thought Keak Carradine's motivations were weak and he was a really unsatisfying villain.

      >spoiler
Because there's no payoff, they don't experience any peace, they just essentially off themselves and then that gets made spectacularly worse after the original run

they have their peace with each other and that’s the payoff

You are not meant to speedwatch it.

How am I supposed to watch it then you fricking idiot? Watch it over six months like how it was released? It'd still get uninteresting when I see him pile drive a stake into a robot for the fifth time no matter how much time passed. Of all the things in the comment to get upset about, you make up some bullshit buzzword and have no actual argument. Shut the frick up you dumb piece of shit.

I agree with trips anon now (nice get), but dubs anon (also nice get) described how I felt about it. In retrospect it's basically the best ending for Chirico to give up fighting rather than continue to be a killing machine. I guess it's just a little anti-climatic considering Chirico in the very same episode kills a God.

I watched it over a week with regular breaks and paying full attention without doing other shit like building any plamo or whatever. You morons sound like the sort of idiots who say you need LSD or weed to enjoy certain albums, well those albums are probably shit if you need to cope and contort the way you do things to suit it. Do you have any actually worthwhile things to say now, or are you going to continue citing some made up word with a vague meaning that can change depending on which homosexual on this board is posting, or which of your schizoid personalities is on display?

dubs anon here, the rub is that they don't do very much chilling besides being literally frozen
Given their problem was the world kept dragging them back into wars they didn't have a stake in, their 'payoff' being to frick off and experience nothing is hollow

Watched all the shows, own a few merch and even played the Heavy Gear vidya and intend to play the Tabletop too. I just can't get enough of the good old skating mechs VOTOMS created.
