There was a FRICKTON of gaybait in YOI which caused little fujoshi teenage girls to get insanely aroused. Combined with the recent wave of pure SJW tumblr settling down into a permanent "your entire online presence must be activism" state, these teenage girls started to get INSANE about the representation, accuracy, and status of their favorite gay ships. If someone was shipping some yaoi thing in a way that was "detrimental" to homosexual men they were deemed the "nasty fujoshi" who refers to homosexuals as "uwu yaoi sinnerz" and the like. Meanwhile the most CHASTE and KIND fujos (who now hate being called fujos) represented their favorite anime gays the ~proper~ and ~wholesome~ way. AKA no sex no porn no 'degeneracy' normally found between gays and the fujo art that came with them.
Voltron soon started after and there was a massive ship war between Shiro and Keith versus Keith and Lance. Keith/Lance shippers started calling themselves "Anti-Sheiths (Shiro/Keith)" and slowly developed the Yuri on Ice-like mentality about how THEIR ship was so much more PURE and WHOLESOME than Shiro/Keith. This is basically a ship war now embedded with arguments about degeneracy and "portraying gay men respectfully". Shiro/Keith shippers thought they were fricking moronic, of course, and told them to frick off. It turned into a massive moralgayging lore that grew into death threats/doxxing attempts/suicide attempts and the like.

I can see why people like it or why it's caught on now. Marcy and Andrias have alot of past and future angst in common Andrias especially has an interesting role as her friend/traitor. It's got an intriguing dynamic like grimsha. Sadly you have to squint to see it cuase these two never got much screen time but still. Also it was mentioned a bunch when the episode initially came out but there's alot of parallels made between Marcy and Leif. It was hunted Andrias saw her similar to Leif. Leif of wich, was heavily shipped with Andrias.
Parallels aside, Marcy has alot of things tying her to Andrias as well. Andrias was the first person outside of Sasha and Anne that Marcy ever opened up too. He was the only person she ever told about the box because she deeply trusted him. He was the only person that communicated with her through her interests (puzzles and flipwarts and such) because they were his interests too, and even when she was talking about things he didn't know or understand he still listened because he liked (and was comfortable) being around her. He was also undeniably the person she spent the most time with in Newtopia. They meant so much to one another, it's such a shame things went down the way they did.
