A man who values the extreme left more than the liberal right is not right-wing in the traditional sense. Nor is he political, because that involves caring about what others think and this dude was in his own world. In their totality, his views amount to being a masculine extremist and philosopher of the same. He didn't really have a place in any contemporary politics, even if the financiers of Red Dawn were neocons, he clearly meant the film to have a deeper message along his own lines.
