okay but why would it be a kalashnikov rifle?

The star wars universe has had projectile guns before and they are not just clones of counterparts that wouldn't come about a long time from then in a far away galaxy

convergent evolution. the AK47 is simply a superior design. it's like how every third-world country has their local AK clones, every planet produces AKs as well

It's really not, the AK74 is a superior weapon and it's still mid-tier when stacked up against other intermediate cartridge rifles.
          >it's like how every third-world country has their local AK clones
3rd world countries have AKs because the Soviets produced far more than they would ever conceivably need and dumped them into the 3rd world for cheap.

to be fair, star wars weapons are WW2 prop guns with a walky talky and a small radiodish glued to it, so it wouldn’t be too far off for them to spray paint an AK47 black and use it

Isn’t this just shit Republic Commando made up because they wanted a shotgun, and everybody just said “yeah, sure whatever”

Pretty stupid idea. It would be cool to watch them swinging the saber around and molten sparks fly off it. Jedi aren't using pure reflex when they deflect lasers fyi. They're using the force to read the path.

Why the frick not? How can they cut steel doors but not stop bullets? Why the frick is anyone using lasers?

pretty sure the lore is that lightsabers can block projectile weapons, but they just can't reflect them back at the shooter like they can with lasers.
think: lightsabers can cut or melt almost anything. you think a tiny bullet or pellet hitting one at high speed wouldn't just vaporize?
unless it was beskar steel bullets...

Obi-wan's saber appears to obsorb/dissipate that guy's blaster just as it does when Luke is training with the blast helmet. Obi-wan blocks the shot then cuts his arm off.

Because the nu directors are all morons that didn’t understand making all the guns iconic ww2 and 1950s guns was a stylistic decision. They couldn’t get stg props so they used m16s and dressed them up to try and look like stgs

Star Wars guns are usually just real guns with random shit slapped on top. The prop department gets a bit lazy sometimes like with the AK in OP's pic (random AK style rifle with some kind of a pipe put over where the bolt carrier used to be and a magazine meant to look like a space magazine) or Leia's blaster from the ANH (just a .22 starget pistol with random crap put over the barrel).

They can go from practical effects to green screen then a dome made of TV panels but still put out crap like in OP? That's just lazy excuses

most of the prop guns that are “just guns” are from the first movie, where Lucas actually had a somewhat tight budget. Pretty much every weapon introduced after that is an intricate prop. There’s almost no guns in the prequels that are “just guns”. Even by ROTJ most new weapons were pretty elaborate props. That being said, gribblied out guns are kino. The AK is a ripe platform to turn into a star wars gun but jesus christ they didn’t even try

        Anonymous

        >Even by ROTJ most new weapons were pretty elaborate props
nah they didn't really start getting original gun designs until the prequels. Even so that tight budget still set an iconic aesthetic indicator for star wars, something that has been certainly ruined in the sequels but is still done just fine in the shows for the most part. Here's a pic of an AK style blaster that actually looks decent, from S2 of mando.

        Anonymous

I see your point but I think it is more nuanced than that for the prequels, clone trooper blaster still just looked like ww2 era weapons and everything else was just an atomic age homage. I think people b***hing about this AK need to go back and look at Rouge One, they did the same thing with the AR platform

Star Wars uses real weapons all the time but usually they are more heavily modified and not as modern and recogniseable as the AK which is probably the most recogniseable assault rifle next to the M16. Some of the OT guns might look silly to people who really know their gun history, but this shit in the OP looks stupid to literally everyone who sees it.
