all of the above honestly, and then other reasons like post-COVID theater attendance, writing quality split with the TV industry, pandering to international audiences resulting in bland plots, streaming making paying $15-20 for one movie seem obscene, probably more. There’s no one reason, it’s a ton of shit that’s killing the film industry. Frankly I don’t care if it does at this point, I can’t remember the last time I felt a damn thing watching the focus group approved slop they put out

I think we’re seeing a complete recalibration towards the kind of films that people are willing to go see in theaters. The cancer of the past 15 years of franchise filmmaking is probably close to dying. I can only hope several movie studios close over this and the ones that are left have to adapt to survive. Auteur cinema resurgence perhaps?

I think "M3gan" is a good example of what kind of movies can be profitable now: mid budget crowd pleasers with smart marketing. Of course for every M3gan there's a dozen genre films that came and went without having much of an impact (The Pope's Exorcist, Plane, Consecration, etc). So a low budget isn't a sure fire solution, but it certainly leads to a more interesting theater experience than big budget spectacle after big budget spectacle.

I also think theaters need to scale ticket price to budget, or at least have some kind of first run "super saver" series in the $3-5 range for these kind of movies. It's insane to think the ticket for Fast X and Skinamarink cost the same. Just get people in the habit of going to the theater again and rolling the dice on flicks they've never heard of.

          Anonymous

A first run savers would defintely get my ass back in the theater seats.

It should be like video games where price scales to budget. A $200 million tentpole blockbuster can cost $15.00. And an indie or midbudget movie should cost $3.00-$7.00. Because right now, those small scale films go direct to streaming with little fanfare.

          Anonymous

          >I also think theaters need to scale ticket price to budget

Does matter. When every major franchise in DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, etc, etc is pushing woke shit, the very rare non-woke film will have the "it's probably woke" mindset of most of the audience.

Streaming services, The pandemic. pricey ticket/concessions at the theater, Not enough investment in more novel ways of filmmaking. Also, the superhero genre is losing it's wow factor. We've seen Batman over half a dozen times in recent years along with Superman etc. And when you can sit in the comfort of your own home why spend extra at a theater? Most big screen televisions are in a majority of people's budgets now. You can get a nice LG OLED or Sony Bravia and watch the movie right there at home while getting a theater like experience. Scarlett Johansson tried to sue Disney + a couple years ago because Black Widow was released early on the streaming platform from theaters decreasing her earnings on the film as a result. Streaming services have allowed audiences to save a considerable amount of their cash and it's also more convenient when you don't have to travel or carpool to see a new film. Seeing movies used to be more of a collective experience. As you can tell, that's rapidly changing.

I agree with OP's points. I would like to add that some of the franchises that Hollywood has shown off of late are already selling out audiences.Transformers is in its 7th movie or something. fast and furious in movie 10 . DC's capeshit is a flop with bad cgi and Miller is not someone audiences want to see on a screen beyond his schizo crap.Marvel movies are more now than James Bond movies and it did it in just 15 years .It is for these reasons that movies like Mario Bros or top gun become successful.

Issue with capeshit is there is a market for it but the market has been oversaturated for years along with steadily worse and worse attempts.
Add in almost all these movies require you to now having watched 3 previous films, a tv series, and read a book to full understand everything its completely understandable why they losing people.

Best thing to do is the Studios need to massively scale back on the amount of movies made and their overinflated budgets along with toning down the amount of crossover and multiverse tier shit (normal people dont like trying to figure out shit like that). Wont happen but its wishful thinking

He didn't greenlight Flash but remember this idiot wants to sound like he cracked the code but he's as clueless as the rest of them planning movies about D-list generic superhero team no. 12 no one heard about (and forever such hopeless projects will be recommended because Gunn made Guardians of the Galaxy work).
Superhero genre is mediocre already and now that the masses are getting tired it became cool to hate on them or be proud of how indifferent they are. I expect a few alterations to his plans. A few cancellations. Gone are the days when any movie about capeshit nobodies grossed 1 billion for nothing. As for big franchise movies there are a few that enjoy some degree of success in their own right so the playing field is more even now.

I'm surprise that DC hasn't played it safe by making a proper high budget Teen Titans movie by this point. It's an IP that's been popular for 2 decades in animated form but so far, they've only done a shitty low budget live action series for it.

DC and Pixar had too many shit films in a row.

Looks like a boring movie, with boring characters, fricking boring like most capeshit released after that last avenger movie.
It's funny watching them try and try but they will never be Marvel, not even Marvel will ever be Marvel again.

The one simple reason is that the audience doesn't know what this movie is supposed to be.

Is it standalone? Is it a sequel to something? Is it connected to the Snyder movies (if so, it's not clear how)? Are we supposed to watch something before this one?

    Etc...

The overall fatigue over superhero movies adds up to this confusion. And DC is not making it easier.

It's just stupid that at this point DC movies have this sort of weird non-continuity continuity where you don't even know if they're serious about making it all connected or not. And then to make it even more bizarre and unpalatable they pull up Keaton from 30 years ago and produce some new super-chick that everyone is acting like we should already know about but nobody saw before.

Also Ezra looks totally idiotic in literally every single shot.

i have a theory that a significant amount of movie sales were driven by people just being bored and going to a movie with friends or family members to fill some time and have something to talk about after. not even movies they cared about seeing, but just some shit they saw on a commercial and said frick it, let's just watch that. then cuckvid happened, places shut down, and people lost the habit of going to see these movies as a default timesink. the quality of hollywood doesn't matter, as normalgays will eat whatever slop gets put in front of them. they've simply moved on to alternative slop, or at least alternative methods of slop delivery ala streaming

    >Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
    >The Little Mermaid
    >Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

That’s certainly also contributes, but are you trying to say that’s the only relevant factor? Are you a shill?

        Anonymous

It's definitely the biggest factor. All of these big franchise films made billions of dollars throughout the 2010s and they're still the most popular movies. The declining box office numbers this year has to be for other reasons, even last year it was better overall. I think it's mainly that people don't care as much about going to the theaters. MCU really fricked everything up

The quality bar just got raised. People won’t go see a movie now unless they’re excited about it,

i have a theory that a significant amount of movie sales were driven by people just being bored and going to a movie with friends or family members to fill some time and have something to talk about after. not even movies they cared about seeing, but just some shit they saw on a commercial and said frick it, let's just watch that. then cuckvid happened, places shut down, and people lost the habit of going to see these movies as a default timesink. the quality of hollywood doesn't matter, as normalgays will eat whatever slop gets put in front of them. they've simply moved on to alternative slop, or at least alternative methods of slop delivery ala streaming

has it right. If you want asses in seats, make something so worth watching that you can’t wait for it to go to streaming

Basically this is the story of current Hollywood
        >Franchise films get popular in the 2000s (LOTR, Spider-Man, Pirates)
        >DVD becomes obsolete and replaced by digital
        >By the 2010s Hollywood completely focuses on franchise movies and nothing else because they can profit from merchandising now that DVD is dead
        >Streaming services emerge, Hollywood strategy is to dump a ton of garbage on them to gain long-term subscribers
        >Audiences are trained to only go to theaters for spectacular franchise films that are part of a saga, basically just modern film serials
        >They don't watch anything else
        >Corporations start putting new movies on streaming so they can get subscribers, movie theaters lose value
        >Pandemic and lockdowns arrive
        >TikTok and other short-format video websites dominate the world
        >MCU declines, no more ongoing saga to entice people
        >Now that that movie theaters have lost their allure nobody cares enough about the movies to actually drive to one
        >Oh yeah and theaters are expensive as frick

I am just really tired of the entire spectrum of media in general everything is just too fricking shit and it kind of feels like the people that used to make good stuff is slowly disappearing or dying out.

I don't want to be a doomer and I am sure there are still a lot of good stuff being released if you dig hard enough but every time i look into whatever has been recently released or announced I can't find much that catches my interest.

i would go to the movies more if the snack bars wasn't so readerly expensive. The popcorn combo was double what i paid for the ticket so i just bought my shit somewhere else.

With the CGI, I don't think it's an issue of "bad CGI" or "too much CGI." The problem (for Hollywood, anyway) is that CGI isn't a selling point anymore. It's super-common, and audiences have seen a lot of kino shit, so it's rare for CGI to impress anymore.

That's why people made so much out of Top Gun using largely practical effects, like putting the actors in real planes. It felt distinct against a sea of CGI, because practical effects have largely fallen by the wayside.

Plus, yeah, practical effects give actors more to work with in terms of performance. You stick a classically trained British actor against a greenscreen with a tennis ball to act against, he's not gonna deliver what he would on a real set (or, God forbid, a location shoot).

Right now Hollywood is really banking on Barbie to be a massive worldwide hit and spark a political dialogue since the whole movie is just a bunch of feminist monologues about how hard it is to be a white woman in America

With a few exceptions, the movies weren't good. Politics are over stated. People see what they want to see, like Mario, M3GAN, Spiderverse, and Guardians 3.

People are sick of superhero movies that they feel like they just have to see out of obligation. When one gets good word of mouth then people will see it, but the business model of "shove random crap in from elsewhere in our franchise" isn't doing anything in-and-of-itself.

I feel bad for Flash fans now the same way I felt bad for Green Lantern fans in 2011. This is your one shot to make a good impression with the masses, and you eat pavement. It disappointed fans of the franchise, it left critics mixed, bad opening weekend. Just a disaster for the character.
