First season was barebones and low budget, nobody was having a good time, according to Shatner's documentary about TNG, Chaos on the Bridge. She talks about how she had to steal food from the set of Cheers. She gambled that it wasn't gonna get better and she lost.

          No.

TNG got good BECAUSE she left. There were too many characters in the show. 9 regular characters is too much. Worf took her place. When she left we finally had time to focus on other characters.

The show even got better again when Wesley left. They now have even more time to focus on the core cast. 7 regular characters is the magic number and feels just right.

Its more than a few. The writers leaned too much on beating up Worf as a way to show that the antagonist was strong and dangerous.

I like Worf; but I think DS9 used him much better than TNG did. On TNG Worf spends way too much time voicing legitimate security concerns but getting overruled by Picard or Riker to show how peaceful and civilized the Federation is or getting his ass kicked to show how tough the alien of the week is.

Basically. She didn't think TNG was going to go anywhere (to be fair she not alone) and so she jumped. TNG becomes a huge hit whereas she goes on to do nothing - pretty sure she did nude for Playboy or something. She got a few pity episodes that the show could also use as a gimmick for mini-hype. Bit of trivia, she is the granddaughter of Bing Crosby.

Pulaski brought balance to the show. Season one it really seemed like they wanted to start having lots of daytime soap opera crap about Picard and the Crushers, perhaps even finding a way to make Wesley into Picard's bastard son with some technobabble explanation of why none of the medical systems noticed before. By the time season three came around, the series has firmly gone in the direction of scifi stories with some relationship drama but avoided the really dumb shit that shows like 'Stargate Universe' fell for years later. I would liked for Muldaur to have been able to continue in her role but even having her there just for a year set things on a better course.

Pulaski's problem is she's a McCoy clone and they tried to re-create the Spock and Bones frenemy dynamic with her and Data, but instead of the back and forth verbal sparring those two had it just felt like a mean old lady bullying an autistic boy

that's because Bones usually got btfo by Spock in their arguments despite usually being the one who started it with him, making his prodding seem less mean spirited because it just rolled right off Spock's back. Data is very naive compared to Spock's and just kind of takes the verbal abuse with no comeback most of the time.

I recently watched TOS for the first time and Bones seemed a lot meaner to me. There were times he dug the knife in even unprovoked by Spock.

                Anonymous

That even carries over into the movies. Kirk asks what would happen if Genesis is used on a populated planet and Bones spurgs out over Spock saying it would essentially reformat the planet because Spock didn't add in a bunch of moralistic hysterics to the answer.

It's been a while, but I believe they edited out McCoy's more civil moments in the conversation because they were unnecessary and tedious.

The crux of the scene is the same; McCoy is aghast at the awesome power of this stand-in for the atom bomb and is unnerved by Spock's nonchalant attitude.

              Anonymous

The difference is that Bones actively disliked Spock's way of thinking and doing things. Pulaski simply refused to accept Data as a person but she didn't have a problem with him otherwise. She even seemed to enjoy his company in an academic way.

They were probably saving that story line for a later season of how she accepts Data as a person and part of the crew, not a thing. Too bad they never got around to it.

It was just the one producer who had a problem with McFadden and he was replaced after season two

Maurice Hurley was sexually harassing Gates and fired her when she didn't give in. Hurley left as showrunner after S2 and Rick Berman immediately brought her back.

It was an open secret among the fans and production staff when it happened.

        Anonymous

Yes, I had that issue of Playboy. It wasn't all that great but keep in mind I'm comparing her to other Playboy models. IIRC, the photoshoot was space themed as you'd expect but they slicked back her hair and the look in general felt like it crossed the line between tomboy and androgyny. Of course she was naked, so there were breasts and bush but Playboy wasn't like Penthouse, Hustler and other hardcore porn magazines of the time. They generally didn't do extreme pussy shots and stuff like that. If you were a man in his 20s or 30s at that time, you probably had personally gotten a woman with a better body and face naked at some point. Her photoshoot was entirely the novelty of her having been on Star Trek. Without that, she would have been lucky to have been able to appear in a bottom tier porno mag like 'Screw'.

The first Dax wanted to go part time for the final season of the show, so she could go full time on a new show that was just starting. Not exactly, after their six season contract was up she didn't want to sign on for the final season and instead be made a recurring character. Executive producer Rick Berman said it was a take it or leave it offer so she left it and they killed her off. She blamed Rick Berman and called him a misogynist, he blamed the studio for it being an all or nothing situation. Show runner Ira Steven Behr claims he was in the dark about it all and probably would have worked it out or left with her.

I mean a lot of actors back then did softcore porn. They called them either erotic thrillers or sex comedies. It was respectful work back then that put food on the table because they needed a ton of shit to sell on late night cable and direct to video. Actresses back then got naked all the fricking time because nudity is the cheapest thrill. Nowadays actresses don’t do softcore shit because it’s seen as rape or whatever.

Maybe she made a bunch of money acting and wisely invested it instead of spending everything on houses and cars then quietly retired and lived off her investments. Not everyone wants to be a celebrity their whole life. Ezri sells houses now and hangs out with her dogs and girlfriends, for example.

My guess is she didn't take job seriously. Lots of rich people with connections get into these kinds jobs as a hobby thing. They want to be famous but they don't really care how so they do some modeling, acting, maybe some singing, etc. They don't have a passion for it however so when it is time to work long hours or apply real thought into the work they become flakes and get a reputation for not being team players.

That's not a particularly long list. That's like a guest appearance on a show or a scene or two in a movie every year and its on stuff most people will never have heard of and it cuts off at 2006. Her background in modeling and music videos fits right into what I said as well.

Compare that Crosby who is basically having the same kind of career except putting in thrice as much work in the same time period and is still working.

Linda Hamilton's sister, Leslie, is a twin (was; RIP). She looks exactly like her. The scene in T2 where Sarah is having that dream, and sees herself in the playground with baby John, Leslie is the Sarah in the playground, and Linda is the Sarah at the fence.

That someone ended up being Bruce Boxleitner's actual wife, which turned out to be a good casting choice. I enjoy the contrast between her being in Babylon 5 and her best known role on 'Little House on the Prairie'.

Her character wasn't pointless, it just wasn't developed. We don't know what her character was because it was never allowed to be.

        [...]
Honestly, she played extremely well with Worf.

We could already see where her character was going: rape rape rape rape rape. Developing her more would have turned the show into a trivia question about short lived sequel series.

She was also more hyped about getting her movie career off the ground after films like 48 hours, Pink Panther, getting roles for Miracle Mile and Pet Semetary signed. However her movie career tanked and they offered her a guest appearance to extended her character a bit more as we get Yesterday's Enterprise and eventually her more fun even halfu Romulan daughter.

The first season of TNG was a disaster production wise and her agent convinced her that the show would be canceled. Her character had nothing to do and was basically just a background extra most episodes. She asked to be written out so the producers gave her a laughable death to spite her, there's an infamous Twitter exchange between her and Rick Berman about her last day on set.

Worf stepped into her role and the show finally found its footing around season 3, it's a shame because it might have been interesting to see how things played out if she stuck around.

      Anonymous

As another anon pointed out, her character was mainly pointless. Worf worked well as an indicator of an alien's strength, which never would have worked with Yar. All the shit about rape gangs was tedious and no one wanted to end up with a bunch of #metoo type storylines of female trauma. Many of the cast and staff had backgrounds in soap operas and wanted to do a soap opera in space. Thankfully that never worked out but without those storylines, Denise probably would have been relegated to minor cast anyway.

No anon. I checked that Twitter exchange myself. The internet screencapped it out of context to make Rick Berman look like butthole.

The truth is that Denise made several follow up Twitter replies, and said that the internet doesn't get her and Rick's sense of humor. That they are actually both very good friends, and that she even had dinner with Rick recently. Denise politely asked the internet to stop making it sound like her and Rick aren't friends, and that there is some sort of bad blood drama between them. There isn't. It was her choice to leave the show and she was fine with it.

Of course her follow up Tweets got ignored and only the screencap you are sharing gets attention. Which leads to misinformed people and false rumors.

I think they wanted to drive home that Starfleet is not the mitary and they specifically wanted someone who was 'tough' but didn't have much of an actual edge. Rodenberry's origi al vision of tng was much softer and more idealistic.
