What is your most disliked Special Edition change and why? For me its the Jaba hanger scene in New Hope. Just rehashes info that was already gone over, and makes Jaba look like a bitch with the tail being stepped on.

40 minutes of Leonard Maltin telling me how great Star Wars is.
Yes, but it kept him off the streets for a time and that's all that matters.
Look into Leonard Maltin's eyes and tell me that you don't see madness.
The man had to fight off Gremlins and deal with the discovery and ramifications of Suicide Mouse, have some respect
It gives Han credibility as a succesful and fearless smuggler with how much respect and patience Jabba shows for him. The tail part is just a quick chuckle for the kids, no need to get assmad over it.
>no need to get assmad
I am not assmad, I think it simply undermines Jaba as he is set up. You mean to tell me that same alien that allows one of his goons to step on his tail, is also the same cruel, merciless boss in Return? Imagine if in New Hope when Darth makes his grand entrance on Leia's ship they add him bonking head as he is coming in.
>they add him bonking head as he is coming in
LMAO
It doesn't make sense, though. Jabba already wanted him dead and put a bounty on his head. After such disrespect he would've killed Han on the spot.
Han wasn't successful or fearless, kek. The whole point was he was deep underwater in debt, drops his cargo quickly at the first sign of Imperials, and is mostly big talk and all show. That's why he was hiding out and had goons on the look out to get him. He talked Luke and Obi-wan into hiring him and they were like WTF when they saw his old, beat-up ship. Then he also constantly wanted out of the deal and to run away during the rest of the movie
They even show you right during his introduction when he doesn't understand what parsec means.
Then the idiotic fans started coming up with headcanon to show that Han WASN'T bullshitting Obiwan and Luke.
It's interesting to note that Jabba describes Chewie as "the mighty Chewbacca", which could be interpreted as him being more (in)famous than Han himself.
>lucas made him step on the tail
it was explained that this was the only solution to make jabba look like the way he did AND not have people ask "how did han walk through his tail?" it was not a deliberate comedy choice
I understand why the solution was put in place. However that is even more reason to not include the fucking scene in the first place. Go to bed George.
it was because the original filmed scene had a scottish short fat beardy actor in a black fur waistcoat, but then in the other film jabba was made into a big slug thing, so when they put the scene in again then when han walked around him it was fine for the fat man but jabba the slug had a big tail which was behind him so they had to think of a way to hide it and so they made han pop up like a pop up toaster so that he would go up and it would look like he was stepping on jabba the slug's tail and not just walking through it, pretty funny if you ask me, jabba's face was lol when it happened like he was thinking woah what's happening and han was all cool because he didn't care but then jabba was like ow that hurts and han just keeps talking which is why it is so funny
dude can you not read? just like the scene you explained shit twice. I UNDERSTAND WHY HE DID THE TAIL STEP. HOWEVER ITS FUCKING DUMB AND THE SCENE IS NOT REQUIRED.
it is sorta needed tho because otherwise it would look weird if han just walked through his tail like a ghost, or then jabba would have to be a ghost or a hologram or something but then why would he come to meet in person if he was just a hologram anyway. anyway I think it is cool how they fixed it because it looks like it is just something han would do, step on his tail because he doesn't care and also cause it annoys jabba the slug. makes sense if u think about it
Or...OR like I have said this whole time you fool. DO NOT ADD THE FUCKING SCENE AT ALL. Boom that was easiest fucking solution.
if they didn't do it then han would have to be a ghost or a hologram or jabba would have to be one which would be weird since those are expensive I think so only the emperor has one. maybe you're right though that they could have done it differently so maybe jabba would turn around 180' completely so his tail was always moving out of the way while han is walking round, and then maybe put a worried or annoyed look on jabba's face because he has to keep moving to avoid han's feet when he's walking round
THE SCENE WITH THE FAT FUCK WAS NEVER IN THE ORIGINAL CUT YOU FUCKING NIGGAR, THERE WAS NO NEED TO PUT IT IN THE SE
dude is retarded or trolling, I wouldn't bother responding any more.
I’m pretty sure he’s trolling quite masterfully. Got a few chuckles out of me.
I don't know, I kind of agree that they had to make that change, otherwise it would have looked like Han was walking through Jabba's tail, and the scene fits theyre personalities so I don't think it is out of place
no because otherwise he would look different in 3 and 1 like suddenly he's a giant slug for no reason, so really they couldn't leave him looking like a scottish man even tho he was a good actor, so they changed him with the computer for the special edition to make it more realistic and they had to make him step up on the tail just so it makes sense. I guess they could have cut that part short or showed a different angle but he must have chosen it for a reason
Maybe switch the Jabba out with "Jabba's emissary", who has a seven foot dick, and then Han steps on the dick and we all laugh, even though it completely ruins any tension or pace the movie has at that point.
How's that, autist boy? "Han steps on a dick" fixes the scene and the movie?
hahaha pretty good idea maybe they could do that but they couldn't show the dick because it's a family film so they would have to censor it or cut the film into a small piece so you can't see it but the problem is then you don't know it is a dick and no one mentions dick in the conversation so it would be a bit weird.
i still think the tail thing is the best way thru.
maybe that the scottish guy was a helper ir a servant but then han calls him jabba so he'd have to be called jabba and his master jabba too
Have him curl up like a snake, or have him floating on a repulsorlift sled. They could have done something.
I agree curling up like a snake would be good but he is a slug so he can't really curl up maybe his bones don't work that way. whatever they did is still better than the original where it is just some scottish guy and you never see him again
>slug
>bones
Do you not know what invertebrates are? A human being isn’t one. A Hutt is.
yeah I know they changed him from human to slug but I don't think his bones could curl up like that because he's so big
Look at this guy having a full blown MELTDOWN over anon's critique
Changing Vader's lines on Cloud City in ESB.
Boba Fett voice change
The replacing of the superior original Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back and even changing the dialogue was mega-singular-sexual.
Jedi Rocks, easily, I can stomach almost everything else. The music is the most out of place track in Star Wars, the sequence is shot like a music video and doesn’t feel diegetic at all. It completely ruins the atmosphere of Jabbas Palace.
I watched Return while tripping on acid once and had to fast-forward through Jedi Rocks. Made me really uncomfortable.
It was Greedo shooting first until Lucas put NOOOOOOOOO in Return of the Jedi
Han shooting first was a great moment, Vader silently and stoically hoisting Palpatine into the chasm was a legendary moment, now comically ruined.
Yeah the "nnnooooo" is up there for the tail step for me. The body language was perfect, why he felt it needed to be really spelled out was dumb.
> it’s like poetry, it rhymes
Unironically I think Lucas wanted to tie Vaders lowest point (the “Noooo!” from RotS) to his redemption.
You're undoubtedly right but it's still awful
Actually yeah, I'm changing my Jedi Rocks answer to the Noooo.
This is on my list of acceptable changes simply because it's original footage, they just need a better CGI Jabba that actually resembles the puppet
For me it's Jedi Rocks, it's like someone spilled the worst, most rotten prequelshit into a fine movie
i agree OP, this change in particular is one of the worst. makes absolutely no sense and just turns jabba into a random mook instead of a slimy alien kingpin living in a giant creepy castle.
like wtf, didnt jabba just send greedo after han to kill him? why the hell is he showing up in person to tell some scum hes already put a bounty on to pay his debts?
doesnt help that they cgi-ed the scene twice and it looks like absolute garbage both times. the scene will literally never look good because of the way it was shot. having han walk around a giant zoomed in cgi blob just does not work. just leave the scene out of the film george
The worst one is Vader's "Noooo". This is like actually movie-ruining. Everything else is tolerable.
He walks all the way around him, he had to step on his tail.
he did not, could have stepped over tail.
All the more reason not to redo the scene with CGI Jabba.
Most liked: Victory Celebration
Most disliked: Jedi Rocks
You can still see the original on TNT. They are the only station that has the original cut. Nobody else in the world has it
I have multiple 35mm scans on my hdd
That one is one of the worst. It's just indefensible and one of the changes that make it hard to defend the Special Editions on the basis of artistic "purity" or whatever desperate arguments people make. I can't think of a single major change the SE make that I consider an improvement. That one is bad, but they're all grievous in general.
this change was kino
I like it as music, but in context it clashes.
>clashes
how so?
They're clearly dancing to the music played by the Ewoks in the scene, and "Yub Nub"--along with keeping the focus on Endor--makes everything feel more immediate. Cutting away is supposed to make the scale feel more grand but I never really thought that was appropriate. The intimacy of ROTJ's ending is always what made it memorable for me.
And by "intimate" I don't mean Hayden Christensen's creepy rape stare, because that change was awful too.
thats fair, I haven't seen special editions in long time. Any rewatches I've done in past few years are the despecial versions. I'll have to watch the scene again.
Yub Nub curbstomps this. It sounds like proper Ewok village celebration music and the transition to English lyrics is kino. Victory Celebration literally sounds like orchestra placeholder music. Although I do like the expanded scene, getting to see Corooscant was cool.
>grievous in general
nice
kek didn't catch that, I hope that was intentional if not still nice.
For some reason I am extremely irritated by the CGI dug - that is, one of Sebulba's species - pointlessly pasted into a scene in Jabba's palace. "HEY REMEMBER THE PHANTOM MENACE AND LITTLE ANNIE HURR IT'S ALL PART OF THE SAME CONTINUITY." Fuck off.
please understand it was part of the original vision but it wasn't technically possible at the time
it wasn't technically possible at the time but it was the original vision to put it in, so when the technology came around he thought why not and the rest is history and he made the special edition with the new changes in
The rest of teh changes i could talk or leave but The jaba hangar scene is shockingly bad the fact that . Calls into question everything you thing about Lucas talent , then you realize he but it in because he wanted in in the day and he is on the spectrum
is Lucas actually on spec? it would explain a lot and actually make the prequels even more endearing to me.
every single one of them is kino and necessary
all of them
every fucking second of that hacks garbage
I just can't imagine someone as successful as Lucas who is as incompetent who just fails upwards his entire career
I think we all agree the changes in general suck, but pick the one that pisses you off the most.
the one where I can't watch the unfucked trilogy and have to put up with the ruined versions
The only Special Edition change I like in the whole OT is the Biggs scenes being added back to the original film.
>5. Jedi Rocks
>4. Falling Luke now screams like a bitch after defiantly resisting his dad in ESB
>3. NOOOO in RotS
>2. Restoring the worthless Jabba scene in ANH
>1. Greedo shot first for reasons
*RotJ not RotS
Fuck you, Jedi Rocks is great.
That little retarded lead singing digital muppet in RotJ.
HO CHU CHA MALA KAH TEE TI TA WA WA HAA HAA HEEEE

I rewatched New hope recently
one of the joys is watching old movies is your lizard brain knows you watching models and actors and enjoys it much more and you can admire the craft , like the Roman legions in Spartacus deploying on the hillside,
if it was just a bunch of pixels your brain registers little of the CGi sludge.
Anyway of the annoying things is not knowing what is what on screen. whats just pixels or whats a model custome or whatever just a something i think.
anyway so i am rewathcing new hope and the stromtroopers hunting the escape pod have dewbacks giant lizards things ,
This was added right?
Where did they get them?
They had dewbacks in the stary destroyer ready to go?
Why how are dewbacks superiour to speeders , recon drones shuttels and all the otehr kit they have?
Lucas is an autistic
Spartacus (1960) - Crassus finally faces Spartacus's army in battle
Imagine if this was just CGI pixels instead of thousands of IRL extras
>Imagine if this was just CGI pixels instead of thousands of IRL extras
you don't have to imagine, just watch phantom menace
8000 spainish infantry , kubrick directing them from a mobile tower platform , kino
you rewatched 'new hope' did you.
have you seen the film 'first blood' too, or 'dino escape' by steven speilberg. how about 'things get fishy' by the same director, do you prefer it to jaws 2?
'reinitiate' is of course superior to matrix 2 or 3, but maybe it's the novelty effect.
'the fight begins' I'd put slightly above rocky 3, but 2 is maybe tied with it.
Dewbacks were always part of the lore, going back to 1977. It's kind of implied that the local Imperial garrison on Tatooine kept them around as low maintenance rides, similar to how the Rebels were keeping Tauntauns on Hoth.
I find it harder to believe that Obi-Wan was trained on how to expertly ride a screeching feathered lizard-thing on Utapau. Nice coincidence, there.
The Dewback lizard in the original movie was very bad puppet that they kept in the far background of the abandoned escape pod scene. They reuse the big thing later on, placing it next to the entrance of the cantina where it isn’t being moved- so you would have hardly noticed it was even there.
While there are Special Edition changes I do like there are quite a few I don't, but I could ignore every other change I didn't like except Han and Greedo, its just such a dumb change to what was originally a perfectly done scene.
I was watching this on TV with my parents and some giant cgi nightmare beast walked across the screen in a scene out of nowhere, like it was essentially a jumpscare.
My dad turned off the channel, walked into his room and came back with a VHS and spun it up like nothing happened.
how did he spin it up like a dj, was it a video cd or a laser disc or maybe it was an old record, yo yo spin it up dj haha
He had to spin the little wheels to get the tape to the spot he wanted it to start at.
How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It
Hopefully it’s worth the wait for the people who have been asking for this. I think it’s the most comprehensive video that’s been made about the changes to the different versions of the Star Wars movies, and also a discussion about how and why the changes exist and why some of them are controversial, and a discussion about film preservation in general and why art changes over time. It’s divided into three parts so you can watch it episodically if you want, but I didn’t want to post it as three separate videos because it’s all interrelated.
It's like he was trying to make the worst possible defense of the Special Editions.
would have tolerated the NOOOOO in ROTJ if they chose a more intense shout of intervention other than what I believe to be reused audio from ROTS
Honestly they’re all kinda bad. The only acceptable one is the change to aurebesh writing and maybe the edit of Sheev talking to Vader with the original dialogue in tact.
reminder that this thread could have been avoided if George wasn't such a pussy about keeping the original versions available
There are ways to get good high def versions of the originals. I believe firmly the reason we still don't have OG cuts is two fold.
1. you can get them for free online easily, unless you are brain dead.
2. I bet money that Lucas had a condition of never releasing the OG cuts out of spite if Disney wanted to acquire.
>Doesn't appease manchild pissbabies and their whining and keeps the films as he wants them
Sounds based to me
yeah it's a funny situation when you think about it
i wonder if someone has compiled all of the little changes like videogame patch notes
hyperbased, he had the last laugh
how do I watch the original cut? isnt there a fan edit?
Despecialized Version is what you're looking for
You have a few different options. The first, and the one that kickstarted the whole restoration community, is Harmy's Despecialized Editions, which used the 2011 Blu-Rays and the old Laserdisc releases among a few others. They're pretty good and something of a revelation at the time, but are stuck in 720p. The second option is 4K77, 4K80 (not finished yet), and 4K83. These are scanned and restored theatrical film prints with all that entails. I think they look pretty good for the most part, and you can get these in 4K or 1080. The last option is D+77/D+80/OTD83, which are a mix of the newest Disney+ versions with the 4K project footage. These are also great, and maybe preferable to the 4K projects depending on your tastes. All of them cut out the Special Edition changes.
There's some other stuff you can find too, like a Grindhouse TESB scanned theatrical print which is a fun way to watch it but pretty rough.
rewatching esb now !
what am i in for?
if being outside after dark is so dangerous what is luke doing outside on his own so far from base and close to dark
Heroes downfall
Why was Vader so sure about Hoth He looks at the probe droid report for 1/4 second and its like
THATS IT
le force
oh fuck bros what are these things , the noise
standard imperial procedure is too dump garbage before jump to light speed!!!
I wish i can have dvds of the OG my dad made me watch in the '80.
I have the modern blu rays collection, which are god tier for the prequels, but the OG from my kid memory felt so raped.
Sad!
did we really need this guy pointing a radar gun at a spaceship
it was better when he was doing some random thing you didn't understand because you're not a space soldier
>did we really need this guy pointing a radar gun at a spaceship
Galactic speed trap.
the fact they made Vader do the Nnnnooooo during his redemption scene, at best its pointless since nobody needed it to tell seeing Luke getting tortured was enough to finally break the hold the dark side had on him, and at worst it ruins the scene due to how goofy it really is especially since it just reminds most of the Noooo in revenge of the sith which made most laugh
The stupid Jabba scene. Pointless and senseless. Why would Jabba being personally squirming around the streets knocking on doors to have chats like this? Why is Han being so pushy (even physically stepping on Jabba) when he knows he's on thin ice? When Han says "You're a wonderful human being", what the fuck does he mean? I get it, he's not a human, therefore not actually wonderful, but he's being a dick, so Han is slagging humans? And when it was shot, Jabba WAS a human being, so what it simply sarcasm? Why did he say that? It's obvious from the delivery that even Harrison Ford didn't understand the thought behind that line.
And at the end Boba Fett looks straight at the camera, and probably winks under his helmet, too, just to piss me off.
Total retard addition. Even if it weren't stupid and pointless, it literally doesn't work on account of Jabba being a big alien slug now.
Greedo shooting first is worse, though.
Honestly, I'm not even bothered by any other change except those two. I have trouble even remembering any other change that was any worse than "unnecessary."
he changed the jabba scene because the actor didn't have a tail when they made it so because of the tail they had to make han move and they couldn't just make him stay still so they made him step on his tail like he didn't care and it shows han is more of a rebel character lol I guess he was a real rebel later when he joined them. anyway so that's he he changed it, I think it works ok also it's cool to see boba fert early on like then you know he's really working for jabba all this time to find han otherwise he just appears in the third film when he captures him and it's a bit of a shock like who is this guy. hope that's clear now
definitely the luke scream in ESB, I couldn't believe it the first time I watched the special edition
completely ruined the scene
has to be the "nooooo", but I also have hatred for putting Hayden in RotJ and changing the emperor in Empire
Only good part was the extra scene of Oola in the rancor pit
Hard to say, the Vader “nooooo” ruins that scene, and is extremely dumb. But at least I can somewhat understand the idea behind as bad as it is. It makes no sense at all for Jedi Rocks to be a thing, much less so to literally add it in after the fact.
I grew up with the 97 special editions. Fuck them so fucking hard for never releasing them on DVD.
97 is the best ROTJ ending
I bought them on video cassette, but then I wished I'd bought the originals instead.
still have them somewhere if you want them
Did you notice that the Luke's scream is just The Emperor's scream when Vader throws him in the core reactor?
The 'Special Editions' are even worse than Disney Star Wars for me. Because Lucas turned classics into unwatchable garbage. The Disney slop are just bad films.
And I hate every single change.
I only saw the despecialized Star Wars once, but it's amazing how much better the movie flows without the jabba scene
