It gives Han credibility as a succesful and fearless smuggler with how much respect and patience Jabba shows for him. The tail part is just a quick chuckle for the kids, no need to get assmad over it.

I am not assmad, I think it simply undermines Jaba as he is set up. You mean to tell me that same alien that allows one of his goons to step on his tail, is also the same cruel, merciless boss in Return? Imagine if in New Hope when Darth makes his grand entrance on Leia's ship they add him bonking head as he is coming in.

It doesn't make sense, though. Jabba already wanted him dead and put a bounty on his head. After such disrespect he would've killed Han on the spot.

      Anonymous

Han wasn't successful or fearless, kek. The whole point was he was deep underwater in debt, drops his cargo quickly at the first sign of Imperials, and is mostly big talk and all show. That's why he was hiding out and had goons on the look out to get him. He talked Luke and Obi-wan into hiring him and they were like WTF when they saw his old, beat-up ship. Then he also constantly wanted out of the deal and to run away during the rest of the movie

        Anonymous

They even show you right during his introduction when he doesn't understand what parsec means.
Then the idiotic fans started coming up with headcanon to show that Han WASN'T bullshitting Obiwan and Luke.

It's interesting to note that Jabba describes Chewie as "the mighty Chewbacca", which could be interpreted as him being more (in)famous than Han himself.

      >lucas made him step on the tail

it was explained that this was the only solution to make jabba look like the way he did AND not have people ask "how did han walk through his tail?" it was not a deliberate comedy choice

        Anonymous

I understand why the solution was put in place. However that is even more reason to not include the fricking scene in the first place. Go to bed George.

          Anonymous

it was because the original filmed scene had a scottish short fat beardy actor in a black fur waistcoat, but then in the other film jabba was made into a big slug thing, so when they put the scene in again then when han walked around him it was fine for the fat man but jabba the slug had a big tail which was behind him so they had to think of a way to hide it and so they made han pop up like a pop up toaster so that he would go up and it would look like he was stepping on jabba the slug's tail and not just walking through it, pretty funny if you ask me, jabba's face was lol when it happened like he was thinking woah what's happening and han was all cool because he didn't care but then jabba was like ow that hurts and han just keeps talking which is why it is so funny

            Anonymous

dude can you not read? just like the scene you explained shit twice. I UNDERSTAND WHY HE DID THE TAIL STEP. HOWEVER ITS FRICKING DUMB AND THE SCENE IS NOT REQUIRED.

              Anonymous

it is sorta needed tho because otherwise it would look weird if han just walked through his tail like a ghost, or then jabba would have to be a ghost or a hologram or something but then why would he come to meet in person if he was just a hologram anyway. anyway I think it is cool how they fixed it because it looks like it is just something han would do, step on his tail because he doesn't care and also cause it annoys jabba the slug. makes sense if u think about it

                Anonymous

Or...OR like I have said this whole time you fool. DO NOT ADD THE FRICKING SCENE AT ALL. Boom that was easiest fricking solution.

                Anonymous

if they didn't do it then han would have to be a ghost or a hologram or jabba would have to be one which would be weird since those are expensive I think so only the emperor has one. maybe you're right though that they could have done it differently so maybe jabba would turn around 180' completely so his tail was always moving out of the way while han is walking round, and then maybe put a worried or annoyed look on jabba's face because he has to keep moving to avoid han's feet when he's walking round

I don't know, I kind of agree that they had to make that change, otherwise it would have looked like Han was walking through Jabba's tail, and the scene fits theyre personalities so I don't think it is out of place

                Anonymous

no because otherwise he would look different in 3 and 1 like suddenly he's a giant slug for no reason, so really they couldn't leave him looking like a scottish man even tho he was a good actor, so they changed him with the computer for the special edition to make it more realistic and they had to make him step up on the tail just so it makes sense. I guess they could have cut that part short or showed a different angle but he must have chosen it for a reason

                Anonymous

Maybe switch the Jabba out with "Jabba's emissary", who has a seven foot dick, and then Han steps on the dick and we all laugh, even though it completely ruins any tension or pace the movie has at that point.

How's that, autist boy? "Han steps on a dick" fixes the scene and the movie?

                Anonymous

hahaha pretty good idea maybe they could do that but they couldn't show the dick because it's a family film so they would have to censor it or cut the film into a small piece so you can't see it but the problem is then you don't know it is a dick and no one mentions dick in the conversation so it would be a bit weird.
i still think the tail thing is the best way thru.
maybe that the scottish guy was a helper ir a servant but then han calls him jabba so he'd have to be called jabba and his master jabba too

Jedi Rocks, easily, I can stomach almost everything else. The music is the most out of place track in Star Wars, the sequence is shot like a music video and doesn’t feel diegetic at all. It completely ruins the atmosphere of Jabbas Palace.

i agree OP, this change in particular is one of the worst. makes absolutely no sense and just turns jabba into a random mook instead of a slimy alien kingpin living in a giant creepy castle.
like wtf, didnt jabba just send greedo after han to kill him? why the hell is he showing up in person to tell some scum hes already put a bounty on to pay his debts?
doesnt help that they cgi-ed the scene twice and it looks like absolute garbage both times. the scene will literally never look good because of the way it was shot. having han walk around a giant zoomed in cgi blob just does not work. just leave the scene out of the film george

They're clearly dancing to the music played by the Ewoks in the scene, and "Yub Nub"--along with keeping the focus on Endor--makes everything feel more immediate. Cutting away is supposed to make the scale feel more grand but I never really thought that was appropriate. The intimacy of ROTJ's ending is always what made it memorable for me.

And by "intimate" I don't mean Hayden Christensen's creepy rape stare, because that change was awful too.

    I rewatched New hope recently
one of the joys is watching old movies is your lizard brain knows you watching models and actors and enjoys it much more and you can admire the craft , like the Roman legions in Spartacus deploying on the hillside,
if it was just a bunch of pixels your brain registers little of the CGi sludge.

Anyway of the annoying things is not knowing what is what on screen. whats just pixels or whats a model custome or whatever just a something i think.

anyway so i am rewathcing new hope and the stromtroopers hunting the escape pod have dewbacks giant lizards things ,

    This was added right?
    Where did they get them?
They had dewbacks in the stary destroyer ready to go?
Why how are dewbacks superiour to speeders , recon drones shuttels and all the otehr kit they have?

have you seen the film 'first blood' too, or 'dino escape' by steven speilberg. how about 'things get fishy' by the same director, do you prefer it to jaws 2?
'reinitiate' is of course superior to matrix 2 or 3, but maybe it's the novelty effect.
'the fight begins' I'd put slightly above rocky 3, but 2 is maybe tied with it.

Dewbacks were always part of the lore, going back to 1977. It's kind of implied that the local Imperial garrison on Tatooine kept them around as low maintenance rides, similar to how the Rebels were keeping Tauntauns on Hoth.

I find it harder to believe that Obi-Wan was trained on how to expertly ride a screeching feathered lizard-thing on Utapau. Nice coincidence, there.

      Anonymous

The Dewback lizard in the original movie was very bad puppet that they kept in the far background of the abandoned escape pod scene. They reuse the big thing later on, placing it next to the entrance of the cantina where it isn’t being moved- so you would have hardly noticed it was even there.

How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It

Hopefully it’s worth the wait for the people who have been asking for this. I think it’s the most comprehensive video that’s been made about the changes to the different versions of the Star Wars movies, and also a discussion about how and why the changes exist and why some of them are controversial, and a discussion about film preservation in general and why art changes over time. It’s divided into three parts so you can watch it episodically if you want, but I didn’t want to post it as three separate videos because it’s all interrelated.

      1. you can get them for free online easily, unless you are brain dead.

Despecialized Version is what you're looking for

      Anonymous

You have a few different options. The first, and the one that kickstarted the whole restoration community, is Harmy's Despecialized Editions, which used the 2011 Blu-Rays and the old Laserdisc releases among a few others. They're pretty good and something of a revelation at the time, but are stuck in 720p. The second option is 4K77, 4K80 (not finished yet), and 4K83. These are scanned and restored theatrical film prints with all that entails. I think they look pretty good for the most part, and you can get these in 4K or 1080. The last option is D+77/D+80/OTD83, which are a mix of the newest Disney+ versions with the 4K project footage. These are also great, and maybe preferable to the 4K projects depending on your tastes. All of them cut out the Special Edition changes.

There's some other stuff you can find too, like a Grindhouse TESB scanned theatrical print which is a fun way to watch it but pretty rough.

I wish i can have dvds of the OG my dad made me watch in the '80.
I have the modern blu rays collection, which are god tier for the prequels, but the OG from my kid memory felt so raped.
    Sad!

did we really need this guy pointing a radar gun at a spaceship
it was better when he was doing some random thing you didn't understand because you're not a space soldier

the fact they made Vader do the Nnnnooooo during his redemption scene, at best its pointless since nobody needed it to tell seeing Luke getting tortured was enough to finally break the hold the dark side had on him, and at worst it ruins the scene due to how goofy it really is especially since it just reminds most of the Noooo in revenge of the sith which made most laugh

The stupid Jabba scene. Pointless and senseless. Why would Jabba being personally squirming around the streets knocking on doors to have chats like this? Why is Han being so pushy (even physically stepping on Jabba) when he knows he's on thin ice? When Han says "You're a wonderful human being", what the frick does he mean? I get it, he's not a human, therefore not actually wonderful, but he's being a dick, so Han is slagging humans? And when it was shot, Jabba WAS a human being, so what it simply sarcasm? Why did he say that? It's obvious from the delivery that even Harrison Ford didn't understand the thought behind that line.
And at the end Boba Fett looks straight at the camera, and probably winks under his helmet, too, just to piss me off.
Total moron addition. Even if it weren't stupid and pointless, it literally doesn't work on account of Jabba being a big alien slug now.

Greedo shooting first is worse, though.

Honestly, I'm not even bothered by any other change except those two. I have trouble even remembering any other change that was any worse than "unnecessary."

he changed the jabba scene because the actor didn't have a tail when they made it so because of the tail they had to make han move and they couldn't just make him stay still so they made him step on his tail like he didn't care and it shows han is more of a rebel character lol I guess he was a real rebel later when he joined them. anyway so that's he he changed it, I think it works ok also it's cool to see boba fert early on like then you know he's really working for jabba all this time to find han otherwise he just appears in the third film when he captures him and it's a bit of a shock like who is this guy. hope that's clear now

has to be the "nooooo", but I also have hatred for putting Hayden in RotJ and changing the emperor in Empire

Hard to say, the Vader “nooooo” ruins that scene, and is extremely dumb. But at least I can somewhat understand the idea behind as bad as it is. It makes no sense at all for Jedi Rocks to be a thing, much less so to literally add it in after the fact.

I grew up with the 97 special editions. Frick them so fricking hard for never releasing them on DVD.

I bought them on video cassette, but then I wished I'd bought the originals instead.

Did you notice that the Luke's scream is just The Emperor's scream when Vader throws him in the core reactor?

The 'Special Editions' are even worse than Disney Star Wars for me. Because Lucas turned classics into unwatchable garbage. The Disney slop are just bad films.
And I hate every single change.

I only saw the despecialized Star Wars once, but it's amazing how much better the movie flows without the jabba scene
