The first three seasons of Spongebob are to animated comedy what LotR is to High Fantasy, Dune is to Sci-Fi, and Star Wars is to Cinema.

The writers room created dozens of 11 minute episodes, consistently made of nothing but timeless zingers that made kids and adults bust a gut.

Add to that an artstyle that perfectly lent itself to such comedy and to this day remains as memed (if not more) than the writing itself.

It truly was lightning in a bottle.

Spongebob is just the Simpsons of Nickelodeon. Both had top tier writers who had characters, timing, and pacing down to a tee. Both went to shit but keep airing to this day, meanwhile people only reference the good seasons.

Barnaclehead = Bonehead, I disagree that it’s even supposed to be a “PG swear” like ass or hell. Barnacles likewise is equivalent to “rats” or “shoot”.

very good pacing, and you have idiots as main characters ,however they're not insufferable or annoying. They do dumb stuff but aren't annoying, they are more like children, energetic but misguided.

also it doesn't really show politics or anything to sway opinion, you have a MC that's hardworking ,happy ,has friends ,has flaws ,has obstacles ,has emotion ,has depth, has a talented voice actor.

That is a great Sponge explanation. It is what differentiates him from early episodes vs the later ones where he is almost outright vindictive against everyone.

The writing and editing. Exaggerated humor perfectly balanced with deadpan commentary on life in general. That's it.
The setting is whatever and while it influences some jokes, most of the humor stemmed from the characters doing shit that otherwise made no sense in context, so the setting could have been on the moon and it would've made little difference.

The first 3 seasons or so and the movie were just good cartoons anyone could enjoy. Back when the 2 episode, half hour block was still a thing it was the perfect amount of time for a couple good episodes that didn't try to stretch a joke out for a full 30 minute episode with commercials.

SpongeBob had the biggest quality fall of ANY (and I mean ANY) show I know. It started as a great comedy for all ages, then turned into some torture porn fetish Cronenberg horror shit, then finally turned into ULTRA GOYSLOP with awful animation for preschoolers.

The setting was very sincere. Fish are people, jellyfish are animals, metal tubes are houses, boats are cars. These things are not explained to the viewer, but they are easily understandable. The "ha, isn't the fact that there's water underwater weird?" jokes are appropriately rare. If it was made today they would constantly be making meta jokes about how unrealistic it is.

Very kino, by the episode about SpongeBob being stuck at the bustop I was yelling out random shit and throwing my plate on the ground kek
Then spent hours throwing up in the toilet, listening to the birds chirping as the day started

I'll just say, I continued enjoying it even after the movie and I'm sure if I checked the episode list there's still dozens of memorable episodes afterwards, so that's not really the decline point people on the internet usually proclaim. I mean there's people who say DBZ is only good up to Frieza and should have ended there but Cell and Buu are great too.
The real shitty point was Dragon Ball Super.
Likewise Spongebob at some season really did become irredeemable moronic garbage as I was growing up but I wouldn't know the exact point, just wanted to defend it remained strong for some years even after the movie.

The point of no return if I had to guess is when he became more round and plastic-looking, the humor and characters stopped being smart and it became kiddie garbage
