But when everything else is just complete white noise in terms of direction it doesn't matter how good the story is. I have no idea why people praise Rush for example. The film is terribly edited, terribly shot, has an atrocious green blue filter over everything. The story in core could've been interesting, but bad direction and mediocre writing just make it an exhausting watch. He also made that bullshit Da Vinci Code trilogy, the third one being in particular egregiously bad.
Nolan and late Villeneuve are overrated, but they at least try and you can recognise a movie made by them. Even at their worst they're more interesting than Howard at his worst (or even just mediocre). Michael Bay is a whole another story, he is a director with tons of potential but he is extremely lazy so most of the time it's squandered. Ridley became a senile hack, but when he wasn't he was one of the best and most influential directors out there.
