Maybe you should try watching the series dipshit. He steals a dead guy's identity and abandons his little brother, treats him like ahit etc etc. Legit, watch the fricking show before opening ur mouth
If you meant to reply to me defending Don.
Those things still don't make him a villain.
He tried to do right by Don and took care of his wife.
And did what he could for Adam, but it absolutely made sense to not have him in his life, because he had to keep things together for Betty and everyone's else's sake.
Don's affairs and ads are his only indulgences in a life that is otherwise not his own because of how much he gives up for other people.
He is NOT a villain.
I wouldn't consider him a villain, he's a very flawed tragic figure. I don't think Don is painted as having the type of outright malice that a villain would have, he's just deeply, deeply flawed because of his God awful childhood
Don's a villain but not in a life ruining way that say, Walt White, Vic Mackey, and Tony Soprano are.
He gaslights Betty until she snaps and finally dumps his ass, fricks over his relationship with Megan and leaves her a neurotic mess who sacrificed TWO careers for Don, he shunned his two male children to the point that they consider their stepdad their real father (and will be abused mercilessly by Betty's brother and his wife when Betty dies), his daughter despises him and basically will never forgive him for abandoning the family like he did when Betty died and not fighting to keep her siblings from their abusive aunt and uncle, and his newest employers (the biggest ad agency in the US) consider him a flake and won't rehire him and Roger doesn't have it in him anymore to fricking create a new agency just to keep Don happy after they get swallowed up like that.
Absolutely fricking nothing but its one of the few some guys think is attainable irl for a normal citizen since theyre literally just glorified office hustlers.
Other shows are usually about male powerfantasies that are a bit out of reach like criminals or cops or the military.
But everyone can larp as le stylish boss man
Because the premise is a joke. What if people thought ad monkeys were cool?
Is this really all it is?
I was tempted to watch it but if it's literally just "guys doing advertisement" balls to the wall with no gimmicks (aside from the obvious everyone looks cool and smart doing it) then idk if it's worth watching
The appeal is simple and particular to the times- it's a period piece where the men are fairly dapper and cool, with a "chauvanistic" vibe to the office- they drink, smoke, shoot the shit and hit on the office girls. The set design and shit like that is very well done- everything looks really nice and authentic. Basically, it's all aesthetics. It appeals because everyone hates the recent years where there's no distinct culture or aesthetic that isn't trash people hate.
Some parts are uninteresting slop and the writer's israeliness bleeds into the story sometimes in weird ways, but it is a good show and definitely worth watching. It mirrors the Sopranos in that the business stuff keeps it interesting enough to have you engaged for the parts that focus on the characters and their relationships, though it's not the same level of quality as Sopranos.
No, these people are wrong and only see the surface level shit. It's not even particularly deep or obscure but it's about far more than advertising the same way the sopranos is about far more than the mafia.
Keep in mind most people posting on here can't think their way out of a paper bag, so don't expect any cogent points about the show beyond calling it boring because they've fried their dopamine receptors with drugs, vidya, and porn and therefore anything that isn't shiny spoon fed capeshit can't hold their attention.
Saw the first two episodes. The outdoors scenes are mostly shit, which is typical for shows in a historical setting. The guy cucks his Aryan wife with a israeliteess, something i don't know how to feel about. I loved the joke about not hiring israelites on his watch. I also didn't enjoy Christina Hendricks enough. Does it get better?
I've seen good reviews about it but so far was mid. Meanwhile I have seen women of war, a ww1 show made in Europe and it was kino, so maybe madmen is good by Amerimutt standards tho.
On my third rewatch now. Just started season 5. The comedy of this season feels a bit cartoonist and at odds with the rest of the show. It is funny, and there's some fantastic scenes still (biso biso biso), but it doesn't have that grounded quality which made the early seasons feel analogous to the lives of the viewer.
Probably the fact that anyone with half of a brain even half heartily watching it would understand that it's absolutely not a "male power fantasy" or even close to it.
It's about an incredibly messed up guy trying his best to be a normal, successful person while pretending his past life never happened and showing how that's just not possible and results in his life imploding over and over and over.
Even after he was happily married to Megan who by all accounts is presented as more loving than Betty, he still fricks that up, implodes, becomes an alcoholic, etc. Because he's living a lie as someone he's not. It's one of those things that's a matter of when it catches up to you, not if. So I agree that could have been done better, but imo the way it was done is no where near as important as what happens as a result and doesn't take away from the show.
I've always seen the ad job parallel being that he is Dick Whitman advertising as don draper, draper not being the real guy but Dons vision of what a successful guy is. No different than if some nerd tried to reinvent himself by being "the Marlboro man"
its very boring
It's actually good
has good looking people wearing nice clothes
This one went into obsessive detail about props and sets and cost a shit ton to make.
He's a broken villain protagonist not a male wish fulfillment, on the contrary he's very unfulfilled self loathing alkie
Don isn't a villain though
Definitely not the role the narrative gives him but he could be argued to absolutely be one.
why?
Because he cheats on his wife?
Don is inhumanely selfless besides that.

In no way is Don a villain. He's not anywhere close to a Tony or Walter type protagonist.
Don's a villain but not in a life ruining way that say, Walt White, Vic Mackey, and Tony Soprano are.

The entire show is not about the ad stuff, just the good parts
I know this is bait but the 'America in the 60s' thing is enough of a gimmick for most people I think

Roger Sterling is pretty funny
Boring, repetitive as frick, feminist propaganda, finale mogged by succession... Not a great time to be a madmensister.
Succession?? Oh lordy Succession is barely on Sons of Anarchy tier
Tied with Sopranos as the best show ever made, Matthew Weiner is a genius.
Because the premise is a joke. What if people thought ad monkeys were cool?
Kunny Shipka
Boring

You can't cuck a woman
It's a trauma story about a failed alpha male masquerading as a male power fantasy.
It's a comfy show. Once you become invested in it you won't want it to end.

the women ruin everything and somehow thats supposed to be a good thing
>What makes this different from all the other male power fantasy series?
it most certainly is a male power fantasy series
"This infographic brought to you by a fat slit with purple hair and a below average IQ"

>that's just not possible
A man as careful as Don forgetting the key and Betty discovering it was forced and hackneyed.
He was doing fine before that
Even after he was happily married to Megan who by all accounts is presented as more loving than Betty, he still fricks that up, implodes, becomes an alcoholic, etc. Because he's living a lie as someone he's not. Good characters.
I wouldn't say he's a villain, he's heavily flawed from his upbringing and the fact that he's living a lie and hoping it doesn't all crash down.
When it does, he unravels. This is all blanketed with the fact that his job is essentially lying to the public about shit they probably don't need.
Agreed.
I've always seen the ad job parallel being that he is Dick Whitman advertising as don draper, draper not being the real guy but Dons vision of what a successful guy is. No different than if some nerd tried to reinvent himself by being "the Marlboro man"
mad men is the biggest pleb filter. anyone who says "boring soap opera" may as well be a slack jawed marvel moron
