I'd say the CGI and scenery actually looks pretty good. It's just the CGI and fight choreography that looks bad. CGI wise it looks like a show that a lot of money was spent to make.

They were shaped by extremely strict patriarchal societies, and the total aversion of others to their shittiness. Being of decent intelligence, there was nowhere to go outside the group, so they became mindblowingly skilled at parasitizing host nations and returning the profits to the in-group. And now that they run things, it's like the bursting of a fungal spore across whole societies.

          Canonically there are:
Harfoots, these are the nomadic ROP ones from Mirkwood ("Great Greenwood"), which is why they're all filthy. We don't have any specific ones mentioned in non-ROP works.
Stoors like Smeagol and his cousin or w.e. Deagol. I think they were a more settled, agricultural development of the Harfoots and
Fallohides, which were like the rare hobbits. The main hobbits we know are part Fallohide, part Stoor. Can't say for the rest of the shire. It's like the being white of hobbitness which is probably why they were all the big swinging dicks around the shire.

It’s because they only bought the rights to certain characters and locations e.g. they’re not allowed to reference any Silmarillion characters like Ancalagon but they can reference the name “Silmarillion” (and they did) its genuinely the most soulless thing you could possibly imagine. Nothing but ugly corporate assembly line product. Of course some corporation deifying pedophiles (leftists) will disagree with me because 2+2=9 with those creeps, but.

To be unfairly fair to ROP, this is was a realistic nomadic forest hobbit would probably look like. Just like toiling peasants in medieval times can be romanticized, but they were certainly nothing to look at, or smell.

The fun part is knowig that after the first season generated all of that loss for low ratings, they approved a second season.

They have to be money-laundering by creating artificial loss they can use to make profits disappear on paper. Nothing else explains this shit.

the first half hour of any encounter on a new planet is spent with Dr. Jackson or a linguistic equivalent working on the language in some fashion and then some ancient device allows them to get around it

It's allegorically akin to defacing the temple with the deity being fricked by a pig. It's not about a new, different chapter in the world of Middle Earth. It's explicitly and purposely intended to deface and destroy something revered by white western culture. They got all the Christians they're going to get, now every piece of deep-interest media (nerd shit like sci fi and fantasy, in all the forms that intelligent people get very invested it) to be mangled, rendered communist-compliant, and ultimately disillusion people with the communities by showing up everywhere they gather and going "but POC, misogynist, racism hurr durr my veganaaa" until there's not desire to associate anymore. White genocide.

It's this weird insistence that everywhere has to look like a US metro area. The reality is that in preindustrial times the majority of people aren't ever going more than fifty or so miles from home, this means that populations in that area are going to be mutted together and all look the same in like 3 generations.

I remember this was fricking terrible in Wheel of Time, like they say their village is one of the most isolated in the world, yet every family is a different race. Unless they're all committing incest every generation to keep themselves racially distinct that's just not fricking possible.

Yes, also isn't she Elrond's aunt or something? He acts like her gay BFF and Galadriel is acting like she's single, not married at all and wants to frick Sauron. I think in S2 they will revise this by having Galadriel and Celeborn were fighting and "on a break!" during the time of S1. They can't tell this story without Celeborn can they? I only saw 3 episodes so dunno if he appears in S1 or not.

    >What the frick did they spend all the money on?
I was thinking about it. I reckon it's something like this:
    >$60m/episode - $480m production cost - due to the insane amount of cgi every episode along with all the props, costumes, background actors and preproduction meetings (bear in mind that this still works out as cheaper for its runtime than your typical hollywood blockbuster)
    >$200m or thereabouts just on attaining the rights for the show
    >$100m or something on props/costumes that normally could've half-assed but did better due to the coming s2, along with storage for everything they made
Basically, it's an 8-hour long blockbuster that they had to spend a truckload of cash on the rights for and that they made with the assumption that it will continue for 6 seasons. So some of the money they spend now will save them more in the long run.

Also, hollywood is fricking trash at handling budgets these days

      Anonymous

I disagree completely with that. The largest set had to be numenor I think, which was essentially a medival town with streets and vendors, nothing crazy. The only other location was the shanty town where the black elf and herbalist lady lived. Even the numenorian camp they made was like 20 tents. Do you have any idea how much work they did on the Shire, Rivendell, helmsdeep/Minas tirith, osgiliath and all the other sets in LOTR.
The costumes ranged from okay with the orcs and elves to dogshit with the numenoreans
The CGI is pretty decent, I could see that intro battle in the first episode being expensive and some of the shots of locations like lindon were good.
The battle/action scenes were laughably bad, with the largest being that 1 min intro battle and then the battle in the shanty town with the orcs which was not remotely large enough to cost so much money

I don’t see where the money could have gone

        Anonymous

There's also the half-foot camp/sets, the workers' camp prison, the dwarf mine and (a big one) the outpost for the Orc battle near the end.
Then you've got the small town where the mordor reveal happens, minor sets like the intro where Galadriel fights the troll, and the expensive props like all the boats that were rigged up on animatronics as far as I'm aware.
And then on the cgi front, if I remember right there wasn't a single real horse on set. And there were a lot of horses. That's just one example. Every half-foot scene would've been a pain as well. They really used cgi as if they had an unlimited budget
The overall point being, the show's production values easily rival your typical $200m blockbuster, but over 8 hours instead. Factor in cheaper actors, more talking, less action scenes per minute and reused content and I think $60m/episode is probably not that far off.
Bear in mind that HotD cost $20m/episode reportedly.

          Anonymous

I still don’t think any of those sets are justifiable. The harfoot camps are literally just wagons in a bush, most of the dwarf plot takes place in the main guys room or an empty cave, the workers camp was not extensive.
The CGI aspects I’ll agree with though that’s somewhat by choice. Real horses weren’t a problem in the trilogy, same with hobbit design.
Basically my point is the trilogy was superior in almost every aspect including set, costume, design and action sequences by a mile and at a fraction of the cost. CGI being the major difference i guess

Of course “/rop/“ just went away after the first few episodes dropped.
