OK so I defended this scene at first but then in the most recent episode they made a meta joke with a comic book artist explaining how they save budget on animated shows by using tricks in boring scenes to cut down on the amount of animation needed I order to splurge for the important action scenes.

Mark's whole deal is that he wants to be normal and can't deal with the fact he is essentially a demigod. You can make a concept like that work if its grounded enough. Say if the events were contained to Earth. However, we're talking cosmic level threats so his whiny bullshit comes off incredibly naive and downright irresponsible. He is one of a few beings that can actually stand against the Viltrumites enslaving the whole universe and he is worried about College. Just makes you hate the character but it is not his fault. Its due to the writing wanting to be bombastic and cover this cosmic threat while also wanting to keep Mark a teenager in conflict with his powers and heritage. It doesn't come off well given the context.
It's like they wanted to combine year one Spider-Man with adult Goku and it just doesn't work. He needed to have his coming of age story AND THEN get into cosmic level threats

You know, an advantage of doing an adaptation like this animated and not go for live action is that you can have a lower budget but have the creative freedom to also do the amazing set pieced and battles that take place in the story. You can do the story faithfully, hit all the story beats and not have to drag things out with filler or OC scenes. Did all the budget go for Simmons' salary or some shit? Is some producer money laundering and outsourcing the animation to India, and South Korea and pocketing the rest?
It feels like every single episode has to have several licensed songs. That's gonna eat a lot of the budget.
