motherfricker, harry potter was first published in 1997 & the first movie adaptation premiered two months before FOTR; if anything, peter jackson's LOTR owes harry potter for making the fantasy genre relevant again at the end of the 90s.

jackson's lotr was in development since like 1995 and was only delayed because of rights disputes. some random children's book coming out in 97 had no impact at all on whether lotr would be made, they had already bought the rights at that point.

        >the best selling fantasy book in history getting an adaption that wasn't half wienered needed Harry Potter to generate interest
I know most of the board wasn't alive then, but I was, and while there was plenty of buzz around the books on release, it wasn't until book 3 that the hype train really took off, and not until after the movie that it left the station.
Lord of the Rings was already a well anticipated movie among a separate demographic by the time 2000 rolled around.
This is from the land of the rising bong, incidentally; ground 0 of the hype.

At the time, it was due to the sheer amount of low effort copycats failing spectacularly, and a few decent fantasy movies unfortunately flopping due to bad association. Game of Thrones’ success then made execs angle to ripping off dark fantasy rather than the classics, and combined with Harry Potter/Twiligjt starting and continuing the YA adaption trend, LoTR’s success never really translated into a meaningful trend of its own.
Nowadays, it’s a combo of incompetence, authors withholding licenses after seeing how badly other adaptions got butchered, and
Given that shit like wheel of time or rangz is the current standard, we should all be grateful that this is the case, though I will mourn the good movies that were never made in the brief period they could have been.
I think stardust was the only one that wasn’t shit during that period.

Every attempt in the last ten years has failed miserably. Largely for the same reason, they're all woke as frick. D&D bombed because it was woke, Witcher failed because it was woke, Wheel of Time, Willow, House of the Dragon, it's all shit. These things only succeed if you keep them close to the source material.

I've been reading the second Gentlemen Bastards book years after reading the first one, and I'm nearly done but two big incidents of the author being a progressive frickwit have ruined the entire book for me. The second book largely consists of the main characters being forced to become pirates and thus learn to sail the seas, the first taste comes when the guy teaching them to be a sailor explains according to the customs of the sea god they serve "every ship needs cats and women." This flies in the face of thousands of years of Naval tradition, but whatever. But he just doesn't let this shit go. "A boat needs women, they're just better than us lads." Utter cringe, and it paints all the female pirates met later as collective mary sues, but I was still willing to overlook it until near the end of the book they start talking about the pirate's raids. "They barely lost any crewmen" it should say, but it doesn't, instead we get the term "crewfolk".My lip girls in disgust just typing that shit out it's so overwhelmingly cringe.

For me red sails had the problem of being a retread of the original but less interesting.
Both books have the bastards come up with a scheme, Both have them derailed by forces they could never have seen coming or fought against, both have them rally and find a way around it, and both end with them escaping but with a pyrrhic victory.
Red sails was particularly annoying because a fantasy casino heist was a much better concept than progressive piracy, especially when all the sailors except one zesty buck are complete c**ts

I've strongly suspected for a while that there is some cabal of modern fantasy editors who strongly suggest to authors that they up the women storylines in book two after the first one is successful.

        It’s publisher mandated.
Take a look at the current lineup of releases fantasy/sci-fi books being traditionally published, and if they’re not made by a legacy author they’re going to be pozzed to the gills.
There’s a reason why self publishing and even web originals are beating the living shit out of traditional publishing, despite the fact it was seen as a joke less than a decade ago. I know a major part of that is due to Amazon sponsoring a lot of it, but the fact remains that they have a hell of a lot more freedom to write what they, and more importantly what their audience, want.

          Anonymous

The self published Cradle series hits best selling book on Amazon every release. It blows my mind how disconnected the publishing industry is with audience desires.

And all Cradle is is Shonen manga distilled into western novel form.

My brother is an author and gets zero response from any publishers as a white dude, it's already a hyper competitive medium and all the publishing houses have racial / gender quotas now. Only path to getting your name out there as a white guy is self publishing or having family connections.

            Anonymous

This. Self published stuff needs an actual audience to survive, so they have to find someone to appeal to. They can't rely on swiping a ridiculous advance for filling a quota, doing the bare minimum to fulfil the contract, then fricking off into the sunset and leaving the publishers with the difference.
If I was looking for something to pass the time and had to choose between some racially ambiguous cardboard cut out complaining about racism/colonialism/misogyny (delete as necessary) and an isekai about a farmer and his kung fu chicken, I know which one I'd take.

If you're writing a fantasy setting you can play with things like that. Ideally you come up with some reason for it, if you don't whatever. The problem with the story anon described isn't the cats and women on a ship bit, but all the crap that followed after that.

Things like diversity or even gender role discussion can be handled just fine in fantasy, most authors just suck dick at it so their attempts at inserting their political opinions into the series are horrifically painful. This doesn't just go for fantasy but modern writing in general.

        Anonymous

Current year writers can’t fathom the idea that, in a period without easy travel, any diverse community would homogenise within a few generations unless it’s kept strictly segregated. They write every community like it’s modern day california because an area with majority white is offensive to them, even if there are areas of majority black, asian, arab, etc within the setting.

It leads to fricking hilarious scenarios like the WoT adaption, where the diversity in an area explicitly left on its own for around 1000 years implies that Cletus and Jamal both teamed up to lynch any race mixers until very recently.

          Anonymous

Two races being united but apart could be a neat idea, but I'm guessing they just don't address it and just act like there's nothing weird about a mix of white and black people in a town.

i read joe abercrombie's first law trilogy a few years ago, it was good. everyone was an evil bastard, or an evil bastard trying to be better, the fights were won by brute force or being unwilling to stop. they weren't all brilliant masterminds, but none of them were moronic
then he released a young adult trilogy, first was decent, a crippled prince is forced on the run and has to use his wits to survive. the second book had the prince again, but he's quickly replaced by a teenage girl who really wants to be warrior, but everyone tells her no, you're a girl, but she trains really, really hard and is able to beat up 300lb men despite being a third of their size. he passed her off with the usual "speed and skill" bullshit and started blocking anyone who pointed out that the real world has weight classes for a reason.
brushed that off as young adult idiocy and gave the sequel to first law a shot. everyone competent is a woman, the men are either drooling idiots or drunks.

I read up to book 5 and had to call it quits. He obviously put all his fetishes as main plot points. This big bad Dreamwalker character is described in either book 4 or 5, bald, earing, mustache, and you get to the last page of the book where it's an "about the author," and he's bald, earing, had a mustache. The other is when the female protag gets beat up and possibly raped by a mob of people in book 5, and it's revealed that she can't b3 healed with magic, and has to heal naturally under the main protags care. The fetish shit was just too much.

              Anonymous

Bro if you got so far you know that she will never get raped. Not Goodkind, I mean Richards waifu, Ayn Rand, I mean Kahlan.

Kahlan is badly wounded, and taken by Richard to the mountains to recover when Nikki comes to take Richard away from Kahlan to the land where the Imperial Order started, their sworn enemies. Nikki binds Kahlan to herself to force Richard to do her bidding by a spell, where Kahlan can feel what Nikki feels.

Richard is captured and enslaved by a former agent of the Imperial Order, and his wife Kahlan goes to war against the Order. She leaves the war to find him, he wins over his captor, and they meet up in the capital city of the Order.

Also that magical statue he spends majority of the book building, just by a look at it people drop down and start crying struck by its beauty and realize how horrible communism is and start a rebellion.

There’s nothing wrong with adding some depth to pulp to keep it interesting, the problem is people like Goodkind having their heads up their ass because they’re either too embarrassed to admit they can’t write what they want, or too pretentious to realise they’re writing the genre equivalent of popcorn.
Then there’s the fact that the Goodkinds of the world could never write something deep in the first place, because they can never accept anyone else’s view as valid, nor their ideological enemies as being more than bumbling idiots while still managing to threaten the world.
Contrast with even a different libertarian like Larry Correia, who wears his biases on his sleeve too, and it’s clearly not just his ideology. That guy may clearly love to shit on the government at every opportunity, but he still writes government agents as hyper competent where it’s logical for them to be so, and when it’s their turn for a POV it’s clear that in their eyes, antagonistic characters are heroes that can raise morale simply by turning up, rather than cackling over how many babies they plan on eating and celebrating their lack of moral clarity .

Logistically its unfilmable. You could do it as animation or do invididual stories like the chain of dogs, but the whole series as live action is impossible without cutting most of the characters and continually recasting actors.

I was shilled into reading the first 4 books and it's complete uninspired dogshit. Characters are bland, get random stuff happening to them in the middle of nowhere (only explained two books later) and you never follow them enough to be invested, basically walking plot devices.
The narration and pace are all over the place too where you follow way too many characters dispersed over a way too big area.

It's like ASOIAF but with absolutely 0 talent for characterization, dialogues or intrigue, basically just one of these countless attempts at trying to "subvert the genre" only for it to be total crap (who would have guessed!).

I moved to historical fiction and it's miles better even when it's not that good.

    It's probably for the best.

These stories exist in my mind in a wonderful retro fantasy realm inspired by old art that can't be replicated today even with AI.
They already exist in the best format they were made to exist in, the written word.

      Anonymous

That touches on an interesting point I hadn’t considered.
Should AI be used to write scripts, chances are they’re going to train it using the old classics, since they’re more likely to generate a hit when copied. Granted Capeshit generated a lot of hits, but since that’s going out of fashion it’s going to be benched for a while.
The people striking are going to shit themselves when they realise a bot spewing out old movies can outperform them without even trying.
The only thing that can save them is the inevitable AI lobotomies keeping them from writing anything problematic being too heavy handed.

The classic fantasy art is incredible. Most of it was painted with traditional painting methods, which explains why, no matter how good these modern artists are, nothing they create seems to come close to the classic paintings from Frazetta up through 90s D&D.

      quads confirm.

Malazan is too autistic to ever be made into a film/series. The last hope of fantasy is if they adapt one of the books from joe abercrombie. The first law series is amaing and al the other standalone books could be filmed. It is 100% sure to end up popular as characters like Jezal or Nicomo Cosca would have a gazillion teenage girl fans.

just make it like a Star Wars movie and have it be 80% computer generated. Ofc you don't have to be faithful either, but I am guessing there is no fun for them to destroy a work of a libtard author in comparison to a conservative one.

What was with the trend of fantasy authors going on from the 80s till the mid 00s inserting their fetish in their works?

I think it was that the 80s saw a resurgence of styling themselves on the older pulps, which were more racy than lord of the rings, and it compounded on itself as time went on.
Though I do know one case where the author put in a bondage scene to win a bet, so maybe some of them were seeing just what they could get away with.

      captivating fantastical worlds
Most of them are just Dragon Quest. Sometimes you'll get an author who puts some interest in their worldbuilding, such as Re:Zero (plot and protagonist aside, at least the author tried to create a semblance of worldbuilding) or Overlord (I admit that I really like the concept of a fantasy world that gets shaken up every 500 years by the arrival of living gods that wreck the place and destroy the status quo), but isekai worldbuilding is just the same Demon King, slavery of Demi Humans, evil Church, NPC monsters and etc, etc.
      >relatable
Most of them are just blank slates. You can have interesting MCs sometimes, but let's not kid ourselves and deny that most of them are wish-fulfillment dregs.

Isekai completely ruined manga. I don't know how you can unironically consume this dogshit, you must a 80 IQ manchild. It's written by authors who have done nothing in their life but play JRPG and the plot is thinner than cigarets.

OP is yet another fricking moron who doesn’t understand that when one niche genre show/movie unexpectedly becomes popular and successful, all it causes is make studios try to copy it with cheap knock offs and because they’re just looking for a cheap buck, most if not all suck and fail. Or get one or two seasons of TV but don’t really have much cultural impact.

Fantasy is also a genre people more and more try to do just in TV because it’s cheaper and has less risk than movies.

Onearm's Host, in that time, was perhaps the finest army the Malazan Empire had yet to produce, even given the decimation of the Bridgeburners at the Siege of Pale. Drawn from disparate regiments that included companies from Seven Cities, Falar, and Malaz Island, these 10,000 soldiers were, by roll, 4,912 women, the remaining men; 1,267 under the recorded age of twenty-five years, 721 over the age of thirty-five years; the remaining in between.
Remarkable indeed. More so when one considers this: among its soldiers could be found veterans of the Wickan Wars (see Coltaine's Rebellion), the Aren Uprising (on both sides), and Blackdog Forest and Mott Wood.
How does one measure such an army? By their deeds; and that which awaited them in the Pannion Domin would make of Onearm's Host a legend carved in stone."

Raistlin would be the token wise Black who constantly acts smugly about his disability, it's just too good of an opportunity for the powers that be to pass up. Caramon being gay is 100% on point though, I'd bet a thousand bucks on it, right here and now.

The best fantasy works are from guys who didn't even want to do fantasy but just used the genre because it provided more freedom than what they were aiming for. The great ones were also not inspired by other fantasy works.
Like the WoT guy wanted to do some arthouse / historical fiction about his PTSD during the Vet war or smt. GRRM wanted to do historical fiction inspired from GWTW. Tolkien wanted to make his own mythology for the English people. Terry Goodkind was writing his tribute to Ayn Rand, etc.

The bad ones are the kind that use other fantasy, anime, or games as their sole inspiration. It is weird but its how it works.

With Tolkien, didn't he invent the languages first because he liked linguistics and then made up a setting pretty much to share them with people and give them context?
