I really think it all comes down to The Majestic, it was supposed to be his triumphant crown achievement. He had the magic man Darabont, an oscar bait script, he had proven himself as a "serious" actor with the one-two punch of Truman Show and Man on The Moon, he was still a name in the business... and nothing. Absolutely nothing. The movie left no mark whatsoever.
I also don't believe it can be overstated how competitive 2001 was, even for that type of movie.
