I thought it would have a point, but I cannot really see any point to the ending aside from humanising Godwyn as being a flawed parent trying to overcome his horrific past and miraculously raising a "daughter" that isn't completely monstrous.
Bella's story just sort of ends with her being a wine aunt, but this ending shouldn't survive the cynicism the rest of the movie had for everything. Or in other words, I think if the movie continued another 7 minutes her life would fall into another chapter where she's a frickup.

I think the sequel would be her covering up unethical medical experiments by sleeping with/murdering colleagues
very, very miniscule possibility of either her husband or socialist gf snapping from jealousy and her putting their brains in dogs or something

I mean the cinematography is objectively great, the performances are good, production design is fantastic, costume design, makeup, score are all great too. The film is good, but yes provocative and depraved and very liberal thematically. If you put the film being compatible with your beliefs over the movie's artistic merit I guess you can seethe.
It's better than most others nominations. Nolan's Oppenheimer is terribly edited, he tried to cram into the movie so much shit while also trying to leave it fast paced, it's a complete mess. Barbie is a mediocre comedy with some good sets, but everything in "the real world" is completely unremarkable, it does have good songs. Maestro is dated Oscar bait. Killers of the Flower Moon is Scorcese on auto pilot. The Holdovers is an okay melodrama but it fizzles out by the end.
I did really like Past Lives, very well shot melodrama, interesting theme about how even small feelings can stay inside you for many years, it was maybe a bit too brief, but still quite good, great cinematography, I liked the slick aesthetic. Anatomy of A Fall is probably my favourite of the nominations, stylish and very tense court drama. I think people who know how the courts work IRL say it's very unrealistic, but I don't really care about that. The performances in it are also top notch, especially the child performance.
Haven't seen the new Glazer or American Fiction.

Past Lives is shameless autobio, there's basically nothing in it that didn't actually happen to the director.
American Fiction is ironically a boring slice of life story about how blacks should be allowed to make boring slice of life stories.

I don't care if it's autobiographical, it was well directed and had an interesting theme.
I haven't seen AF but I wouldn't be surprised if it is how you described.

The whole reason Margaret Qualley's character is in it is to show that Bella's brain develops abnormally fast but the cyberpuritans are too stupid to get that
There's plenty to be annoyed at with this movie and they picked the dumbest thing out of all of them, the most unrealistic element out of the whole unrealistic movie

3 people walked out of my showing. Personally, I loved it, but the average American will probably hate it since they're pearl clutching, repressed prudes. The movie is about so much more than sex. It's a spiritual journey of self-actualization.

Rufallo steals the show for me.

I thought it'd be a drama with some humour, but it is straight up comedy. A lof of laughs at my screening.

Best supporting actor and production design would not surprise me.

Easily the film of the year. Will devastate the Oscars, as there's no competition in many of these categories. Though can see Nolan getting director simply because "he's earnt it by now" and will subconsciously hold back from letting it sweep up all 11 nominations.

As someone that once fricked a cute but moronic girl i can attest that it is a soul scarring experience. Maybe she wasn't clinically moronic but she was still goddamn braindead fricking stupid. She gasped and said "so good" but in that moronic voice like as if she was "potatoh" and i just couldn't keep at it anymore. Felt disgusted with myself.

    >Literally no one gives a shit
Oscar is dead. Like... can attention revolve around one or two movies (Openheimer, Barbie), all the others just don't interest anyone. Even the nominations don't affect a movie's box office anymore. I remember when the Oscars were a big deal. But now nobody cares. Even the actors and directors themselves, because it doesn't make much of a contribution to the profession or the money. I think it all went after the 11 (12-13?) Oscars that were given to Return of the King. After crap like this collects so many awards, it literally buries the industry.
