I can't believe Hey Arnold isn't set in New York City. It's actually set in the Pacific Northwest, like Seattle.

Of course I've never been to NYC. But everything about the setting felt like the NYC I had seen in other media.

Bartlett has always said that it's an amalgamation of Portland, Chicago, and NYC. As for Oskar, he's a dirty Balkan immigrant.

He can say that, but nothing about the city Arnold live sin feels like Seattle or Portland.

To be fair, I always thought the city looked pretty dumpy in the cartoon, and Seattle is an absolute dump, so it kind of works.

All major cities are a dump. If you live in a city you're a moron.

Yeah, NYC definitely doesn't have a reputation of being infested with rats and streets lined with garbage.

Seattle was one of the nicest cities in the country until maybe the late 90s. All the degenerate burnouts who grew up listening to Nirvana started moving out there and the city fell off a cliff. Same thing that happened to Frisco in the 60s.

I think he is Polish lore-wise but he has always come across more as a Romanian gypsy.

It basically is set in NYC, but the creator was from Seattle and insists it isn't New York.

The only Seattle thing about the show is that the boarding house is under what's supposed to be the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

I never got philly vibes from it
it's clearly most inspired by NYC. I don't think much of Seattle looks like that

It's a mixture of multiple cities. Seattle, New York, and I think Boston or something like that.

What if instead of Hey Arnold it was Gay Arnold and he just gets turned out by all the immigrants that live with his slumlord grandparents. They're like "hey get ova here and give me some football head"

A lot of inner-city schools that sprung up in the 50s and 60s in New York at least are like that.

i always just assumed they lived in the Bronx or Queens

Nah it's pure Brooklyn. Everything about the show, from the set designs to character personalities to ethnic makeup of the school is pure Brooklyn of the 80s and 90s. The only thing 'Seattle' about the show is Arnold wearing a flannel shirt.
