what exactly was the purpose of this subplot?

To characterize Waingro as a vile human being so that you are sympathetic rather than dismissive when McCauley risks everything to go after him.

That's because you're stupid and the movie went over your head.

but mccauley didn't know waingro was a serial killer. and mccauley goes after him because he can't help himself, adding this extra stuff confuses the theme i think.

Mann is trying to walk a line. If McCauley's motivations are too justified, the viewer sides with him too much. If Waingro is too sympathetic, the viewer turns on McCauley completely. The intent is for the viewer to feel a degree of conflict about it that promotes further analysis, discussion and even possibly self-reflection. Which alienates mouth breathers who just want to pick a team to root for like it's a game of football and are confused and infuriated by ethical conundrums.

Nta but I love triggered homosexuals who worship this movie and get so sensitive over any critique or even a question lmao.
              >hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who uses some butthole we don’t know to pull of a high profile heist
              >hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who meets in a public diner to discuss the massive shit show the heist was the and multiple murders we just committed
              >hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who assaults someone in a public place after a high profile heist where we committed multiple murders
              >hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who assaults someone in a public place after a high profile heist where we committed multiple murders
              >hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who ties up a loose end by shooting someone in a parking lot after we were just spotted assaulting that person by a diner full of people
              >let’s just spray everything because loaded magazines are super light and we can carry thousands of rounds with each person no problem
              >hey we can set off shaped charges on a truck with people inside and the people will be totally fine other than some hearing loss
              Baby’s first heist movie.
              >if I display my vocabulary and write a short thesis of crap I can critique this dog shit and make it sound good

                I'll do the first two:
                >>hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who uses some butthole we don’t know to pull of a high profile heist
                1. They needed more muscle, and 2. Beggars can't be choosers. How many individuals do you think are in the professional heist business anyway? Finally 3. Without some amateur fricking things up, there's no movie.

                >>hey let’s be a super secret highly organized crew who meets in a public diner to discuss the massive shit show the heist was the and multiple murders we just committed
They were meeting in a public place so Waingro wouldn't be suspicious, so they could get him to come and off him more easily.

McCauley doesn't even know Waingro killed the prostitute, and the backstab in the heist is more than enough motivation. It's the woman killing thing that's inserted for mouthbreathers, you're not as smart as you think.
              >let's make Waingro a serial killer, that'll sure bring up an ethical conundrum for the audience!

                >It's the woman killing thing that's inserted for mouthbreathers
It complicates the situation rather than simplifying it, so no it isn't "inserted for mouthbreathers" because you're too much of a mouthbreather to figure out why it's there.
                >you're not as smart as you think
Pseuds like to say things like this to save face when they've been outwitted

You even said before it's to convince the audience to root for Waingro's death and make it seem less morally confusing when McCauley goes after him. There's nothing ethically or morally confusing about that. It's put in there for the girls in the audience who wouldn't get why a man would go after someone who betrayed him and got his friend killed. Waingro isn't even remotely sympathetic before he kills the prostitute.

Actually, *pushes glasses up nose with middle finger*, Waingro killing the black girl is to support Hanna's characterization as the hard-bit detective wading through the shit of society but never losing his heart. They could've had him show up at any random murder, but it happens to be a killing related to the crew of robbers so we can dovetail their plots again later. Waingro's sadism ruins or disrupts multiple lives and Hanna's is one of them. He takes that pain home with him and now his wife and daughter have to deal with it too.

to display the incompetence of the police and their misplaced priorities hunting a gang of robbers while a serial killer is on the loose, ironically a serial killer they'd go on to protect in witness custody.

A loose canon who kills for pleasure and fricks up the job AND turns state witness, is the perfect excuse for De Niro to take extraordinary risks to try to tie up loose ends and get revenge at the same time, and that risk gives Pacino the edge on him. De Niro's whole thing in this movie about trying to use a code of conduct to keep his shit locked down, but real life gets in the way of his ideals. He thinks of everyone around him as varying degrees of liability, but he secretly yearns to have what they got... except Waingro, he's just a dickhead.
