What the frick went so wrong?

Seriously
Not even black panther 2 had a box office drop this abysmal. That managed to gross 850m.

    Several factors.

    1. The only reason the first film did so well was that it was riding on the pre-Endgame hype. In retrospect, Captain Marvel had probably the least cultural impact of any Infinity Saga film.

    2. The sequel came at the tail end of a downward spiral brought on by a three year long rapid fire of new MCU content, made up of 10 films, 9 TV shows, and 2 specials, with an overall decline in quality from what came before.

    3. On the subject of TV shows, the film assumes you've seen Wandavision and Ms. Marvel. Besides the fact that Disney+ is a massive money sink with declining membership, Ms. Marvel was one of the least watched MCU shows, and Monica was one of the least talked about characters in Wandavision while it was running.

No it does not . People manage to follow the film just fine without seeing either of those Disney Plus shows.

What are you talking about Kamala TV so sets up the mutants by saying she is one Kamala is a mutant and the end of the Marvel's movie shows the X-Men from the X-Men movie franchise

Except that it completely ignores the Skrulls revolution on earth and they send a group of Skrulls refugees straight to earth
It also ignores the fact that Kamala's bracelets are supposed to connect to a very specific dimension yet in The Marvels it's suddenly just generic quantum slop.

          >also isn't the original Vision dead?
They rebuilt him into White Vision. Hex Vision broke his reprogramming and restored his memories, he came to the realization that he was Vision and left, we still don't know where he went or what his mental state is.

A lot of people have assumed he's going to be emotionless because that happened in the White Vision storyline in the comics, but we have no idea at all if the MCU is doing the same or not.

        Anonymous

This is the difference it makes when you put effort into making a character likeable, and showing audiences how they're connected to more important characters, why they care about each other, etc. You can't not do the work on why we should care about Monica and her abandonment issues with Carol and then tell a big story about it.

White Vision surviving just feels like something they threw in as sequel bait but he's not appeared because nobody had any real plans for him afterwards. Then when they knew WandaVision was a hit they'd already wrecked and 'killed' Wanda, so they greenlit a Vision show and an Agatha show. But it sounds like their only idea for the Vision show is to adapt a well-known modern comic story that fans really don't want to see.

        Anonymous

To be fair it's hard to make a likeable hero who's origin story is-
        >Stuck her hand into a giant red glowing wall of death that just vanished a town and mere seconds ago obliterated her drone from her perspective
        And then
        >Runs back into that same wall after fleeing from it screaming in terror, all she knows about it is if she touches it best case scenario she gets brainwashed and literally has 0 reason to think anything different happens even with stuff made specifically to resist it like the truck, and then she just succeeds because the ending of this show was really fricking bad.

…or maybe they’re just people who aren’t always online or keep up with every new film release. With the strikes going at the time it’s entirely possible normal people totally missed this movie’s release. Not that I’m saying that’s why it flopped, if Captain Marvel had any sort of connection with audiences people would’ve been aware of another of her movies coming out.

No, because then that would be their excuse. They could just say that they don't care about marvel movies or that they thought it looked bad. They could say something honest instead of pretending that despite being terminally online to talk about how they somehow masterfully dodged every single mention and ad and trailer and that they were blissfully unaware it even existed.

The Marvels has all the classic stink of a movie that people feel compelled to care about. Diverse cast. All female leads. Most important character in the MCU. Female director. Etc etc. They feel compelled to lie and make excuses for why they didn't see it and "I wasn't subjected to enough advertisement" is the easiest scapegoat to make it look like the studio is at fault, or that the strikes somehow blinded them to any upcoming movies, as if they were more likely to see interview clips, but none of the other promotion for the movie.

Though if I had to check with my normie friends, capeshit movies in general aren't their top concern, and the target audience of nerd women have moved on to other trendy interests. THe weird thing is I have a female friend who used to be full-on hyped for Ms. Marvel during and post-release (the first movie) and was all about female empowerment, etc etc. But then this movie came and she was like "oh, there's another one?" and that's where her knowledge of it started and ended.

We just had two movies retreading the same beats about characters overcoming grief and accepting the same role. You had to overlook so much shit to make the second movie work from the death of T'Challa off screen to the synthetic heart shaped herb, never mind forcing Ironheart into the story for reasons. Batman was 3 different actors in the 90s and kids didn't notice or care. Audiences latched onto Black Panther, Wakanda, the costumes, etc. Black boys latched onto Black Panther. They killed the franchise's momentum and lost out on building upon a new generation of fans for the character by making too much of the actor's passing due to the politics of the moment.

Black adults latched onto Black Panther because some were stupid enough to believe Wakanda was a real place and others believed Wakanda is what all of Africa would have been like if whitey never showed up because they believed Killmonger was supposed to be a hero. It wasn't about the quality of the movie, which was so forgettable that the only thing anyone took away from it was Black Ethnostate Good (ignoring the end of the movie) and M'Baku being awesome (true).

Yeah yeah, the Marvels is a massive flop in year when Disney had almost nothing but, cool

Can we talk about how frick awful the movie actually is? I watched it the other night, and I had no idea it would be THAT bad. It's not even that that it has a light tone and can't take goddamn anything seriously. Don't get me wrong, it can't, but it can't even do that right, the jokes are hardly even jokes, they're more ""witty"" observations about the plot, setting, or characters. And the serious moments really aren't any better, there is a goddamn scene where one of the characters weakly say "I don't want to remember this" as if seeing obvious discomfort on her face while remembering things that give her trauma was too subtle for the dumb dumbs of the world

I can't even be mad at this, that require me having an emotional response, which this thing is incapable of doing. I'm more mad at Marvel and Disney for thinking they could get away with this and present it as a tentpole mulitbillion dollar making movie

It's a wholly incompetent movie on nearly every level. It barely holds up under it's own internal logic, let alone in the larger MCU story. When the director said she was filming scenes and had no idea what any of them were for, I believe it.

      >the jokes are hardly even jokes, they're more ""witty"" observations about the plot, setting, or characters
      MCU humor in a nutshell.

    The Marvels
    >budget: $274.8 million (gross), $219.8 million (net)
    >Worldwide box office is $206,058,984, which consists of:
    >Domestic: $84,500,223
    >Worldwide: $206,058,984

    Aquaman 2
    >budget $205-215 million
    >Worldwide box office is $396,190,000, which consists of:
    box office: $114,190,000
    box office: $282,000,000

What the hell? I kind of expected Aquaman 2 to do worse domestically than The Marvels because of the string of DC flops last year and how much troubled production problems it had, but somehow it beat The Marvels in both domestic and worldwide?

Aquaman is at least appealing to some women because it has two sexy actors broing it up shirtless most of the movie.

The Marvels has nothing that would appeal to men or women.

Was there any good word of mouth for this movie? Puss In Boots and the new Godzilla movie were able to climb up from nothing due to everyone talking about the film like they're the besterest movies evah.

They should have highlighted the fact that 90% of Carol's costumes show off her buff veiny forearms or her defined sweaty abs, and that the black girl has a big ass that looks fantastic in the suit

Black Panther 2 was a good movie with emotional stakes and a coherent story and a good villain.
The Marvels was one big shitpost that was good for what it was, but not what normies wanted at this point in the MCU.

      >Black Panther 2 was a good movie with emotional stakes and a coherent story and a good villain.
was it though? seemed like they bent over backwards to try and make it work, ran out of ideas and checked boxes to me. Similarly, idk if Angela Bassett just wanted out but killing off the only other member of the royal family people actually liked seemed like overkill when half the movie is already a funeral to T'Challa. I'd have much rather seen an organic continuation of the first movie's story.

90% of the pathos of that movie is because Chadwick Bozeman died of cancer, not because it was well acted or written. The villain and plot were likewise fricking moronic.

Girls don't frick with superheroes like that. The vast majority don't fantasize about being a part of national defense or the thrill of facing down superior opposition. So you lighten the plot and try to fill it out with shit that girls like. And big surprise: it still fricked up. Why? Because Girl Power does not mesh with Male Power Fantasy. This was basically a G-rated movie with Marvel paint. The women are never in any real fricking danger, there's no "overcoming" themselves. It's just a "Oh, I have all the power here let me be in a position to stop the bad guy. OK I did it. End movie." It's brainless. Listless. Passionless. And the source material itself is garbage. No one likes or wants to keep Carol as Captain Marvel. No one will remember her run. No one will go "Oh my god that Captain Marvel issue where Carol--" no. Because the SOURCE MATERIAL IS FRICKED.

Carol isn't likable. The only thing she brings to the Avenger formula is "I am a girl. I am strong." And if can contradiction occurs then the character just frowns and doubles down. "STRONGEST AVENGER. I AM. HURR. MARVEL'S MOST POPULAR. IF MY BOOKS BOOKS SPREAD THIS FALSEHOOD IT WILL BECOME TRUTH." And it just doesn't, man.

Kamala is a fricking non-factor. WandaVision did Monica no fricking favors. And OH MY GOD I don't GIVE A FRICK ABOUT MONICA RAMBEAU OR THE CONNECTION WITH HER DAUGHTER. It's the one god damn motherfricking thing they have pushing with this character like it's going to mean something. MEN DON'T CARE ABOUT SINGLE MOMS MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH BASTARD DAUGHTERS. BECAUSE GIRL POWER =/ MALE POWER FANTASY.

If these three b***hes were written to be likable, fun and charming and dressed the part like the early '00s Charlie Angels movie then this movie would've been something. But no. It wasn't funny, wasn't raunchy, the actresses save for Brie can't do any fricking stunts [seriously Iman looked like a fat fricking tub of lard sliding across the floor for a "dropkick"] and the action sucks dick.

It turns out you can't build a film franchise on a character whose most interesting trait is having a pet cat that's actually an alien.

Man frick if I know, at this point I'm only following the MCU because I want Dr. Strange to have that proper salty runback with Dormammu now that Clea is a thing.

Frick Carol, frick Shuri, I just want ONE proper over the top comic-tier cosmic showdown now the MCU has pulled that "magic is just sufficiently advanced science" stick out of it's ass and embraced the mystic arts.

They had a chance to reinvent Carol and actually make her a likeable relatable character like they did with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Instead they fricked it all up by making her a b***hy “girl boss”.

      Anonymous

She's not girl-bossy in this film you haven't seen; she does nothing in this movie but mope and allow her co-stars to advance their character arcs (just a little bit).

Villain is a boring nothingburger. She's even less interesting than the boring Ronan, which she is just another version of. Her "powers" are boring, her plot is Spaceballs, and her threat to wipe out all of Earth is over-the-top for a girly buddy film.
Movie does absolutely nothing with the Kree, which should have been the entire point of a Captain Marvel 2 flick.

In both movies she faces pathetic villains and spaceships, which isn't compelling when they've set her up to be more powerful than Odin.

      Anonymous

      >she faces pathetic villains
That's a common problem of all female heroes.
They don't want anyone to feel like a genuine danger or outshine them in any way, so they make all villains weak and pathetic or just outright forgettable. That's why female heroes will always be shit.

      Anonymous

Not only is angry Kree girl a boring villain with dumb motivations and a backstory that makes zero sense, but she's poorly acted, her costume is fricking awful, her stupid gold tooth makes it look like she has a giant gap in her teeth. The entire fricking concept was so poorly executed that it never should have fricking happened.

Okay so, when they swapped places they kept their clothes. But when the black one and Kamala swapped the first time, Kamala ended up in the space suit? Shouldn't the space suit have gone, leaving Kamala floating in the vacuum of space?

    1. At no point in the MCU do stargates have this irresistible black-hole pull to them, until they suddenly do for plot raisins.

    2. Hala hasn't lost it's atmosphere, it's just tainted, people go out with filter masks on. So how does opening a portal from Skrullworld to Hala "suck" the atmosphere away? And if you DO add Skrullworld's atmosphere to Hala's, how does that not create a massively destructive mega-storm?

    3. Even more so for the cataclysm of sky-dumping a water-worlds ocean on to Hala in a matter of minutes/hours.

    4. They never get into how this would work with Earth's Sun, because how could it even?

    5. How the frick do you wreck your Sun in a civil war? Did they fight on the Sun? In who's interest would it be in a civil war to bomb the Sun? What possible make-believe weapons could do this?

    5. Captain Marvel and her god-powers fights this Kree nobody who can absorb her energy in stupid fist-fights/energy blast fights. Why? b***h cannot fly, just fly through her spaceship and send her plunging to her death. She has multiple opportunities to do this. It's practically Captain Marvel's signature move. She's a fighter pilot, downing her plane should be her FIRST resort.

As others have pointed out, the only reason the first one did as "well" as it did was because they sandwiched it between the 2 biggest cinematic events of a generation and pretended it was required reading.

The numbers that The Marvels got is generally what the first one would have on it's own merit. Basically no one likes the character.

captain marvel was the first to burn the normie audience. not that there weren't bad mcu movies, but they even retconed the "look how much smarter than the stupid comics" iron man 3 twist. captain marvel was a bad movie, with a bad actress, that came in and messed up the timeline and the character was hyped up as the new face of the mcu and the most powerful. then, they tricked the audience that it was necessary for endgame. now, with the general down swing in interest after the whole infinity saga and the failure to fix any of the problems with the character, it's obviously going to fall flat.
