I feel like mentioning anything remotely related to post-movie Spongebob causes people to pop a blood vessel and lose their shit instantly, even when it's something good/funny.

Not even Modern Simpsons or Family Guy facilitates that reaction among internet users.

Not just a modern fan, even if you are a classic fan and say something mildly positive about stuff made after 2005, you are usually met with disgust.

        >it's tough being a fan of awful shit because people generally don't like awful shit

            >What’s funny about it?
What's funny about Nosferatu appearing for no reason in one episode?

What's funny about David Bowie voicing an Atlantian?

What's funny about Tom Kenny dressed up as a pirate and proclaiming to be Spongebob's "biggest fan"?

What's funny about Ernest Borgnine voicing a retired superhero when he hadn't been a major star in decades?

Spongebob was all about making jokes about obscure/out of date pop culture shit. If an episode from the first three seasons had that black tooth fairy. People would think it's the funniest thing ever. But since it had the misfortune of being in a new episode, it's met with reactions like "uhh I don't get it!!"

You forgot that David Bowie was in a season 5 episode so people hate that one too (I'll agree it was a missed opportunity to not have him sing though)

None of those things you listed were jokes kids actually understood or cared about. No 10 year old watching spongebob 15 years ago had a clue who the hell Ernest Borgnine was or that Patchy was actually Spongebob's VA.
The best, most memorable jokes in early Spongebob come from good witty writing and character interactions.

                >None of those things you listed were jokes kids actually understood or cared about.

Then why did they add them? Stephen Hillenburg was the one who wanted to put obscure jokes into the show so they can pass off as timeless.

                >The best, most memorable jokes in early Spongebob come from good witty writing and character interactions.
Kids didn't give a shit about that either, you have zoomers making memes about Peter Griffin saying "oh my god, I'M GONNA CUM" with no substance or joke. It's a children's show, not a drama.

                >Then why did they add them?

                >Patchy, Mermaid Man and Nosferatu are all things kids didn't like
This has to be bait. And yes, witty dialog and character interactions are COMPLETELY absent from new SpongeBob episodes.

Kids liked Patchy and Mermaid Man because they were funny ideas - live-action pirate in a cartoon and old washed-up superhero. No kid understood the meta joke of the actor playing them.

Nosferatu's cameo was an actual joke. You could put a more popular monster in his place and the joke would still work. Maybe it wouldn't be as funny, but it would work, anyway.

                >Kids want good writing and adults misunderstand them, they want witty jokes and morals

The most popular thing at the moment is about a Half-Life NPC's head sticking out of a toilet singing a Turkish song while he fights people with cameras for heads. It's pretty obvious why current Spongebob is popular outside of internet autist circles whereas the stuff Cinemaphile is obsessed with like Tomboy Lois or Adventure Time with lesbians isn't. The kids of today like wacky, nonsensical shit, they like stuff that gives them a dopamine increase. Shit like "muh good storytelling" is fricking boring and slow-paced.

If you want to be successful, especially when making a cartoon, Make something that would get kids excided. If it wasn't making money for Nickelodeon. They wouldn't have "le wacky faces" and obscure references anymore.

SpongeBob is in the unique position of grandfathering in old jokes/references and being enough of moneymaker to be able to justify making the animation so high quality for TV and it's constantly disregarded by cartoon fans.

Ernest Borgnine voicing a washed up superhero isn't the joke of Mermaid Man

The joke with Nosferatu is that instead of reacting with fear and terror like they did throughout the episode, they treat him as if he's an adorable prankster whose practical jokes are a regular occurrence. Even the guy applying for a job acts like he's used to Nosferatu's jokes, implying this happens throughout town and everybody's used to his antics. Nosferatu even smiles, as if he's saying "I got you good with that prank!" showing that he's non-malicious.

The way people talk about modern SpongeBob characters moving as of they're constantly having a "seizure" leads me to believe your only exposure to new episodes is out of context clips you see reposted online

ive seen ren and stimpy episodes more over the top then most of the modern spongebob episodes people b***hed about even in the games era. its just bland taste

I love season 3 but if you go back and compare it to a season 1 episode, the movie or even some early season 4 episodes it's easily one of the blandest animated seasons of the first 3.

the funny thing is i dont hate season 3 i just hate that zoomers think it was good because it was more blandly animated then the new stuff instead of in spite of it. its a moronic matt groening style attitude

Nostalgia filters help you forget the flaws of your childhood, and Hillenburg era SpongeBob had its flaws like literally any other era of the show.

I missed the humans depicted as live action actors.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are humans

Maybe its because while i liked spongebob as a kid i was more into ed edd n eddy and old looney tunes (especially clampett cartoons) because even when i was little i had an instant love for wild animation

I wonder how many kids (and adults) today just didn't grow up with that kind of cartoon and if that's at least partially why animation is in the state it's in today

Why does modern Spongebob apparently keep trying to bank hard on its visuals and shit? Like it wants to be bootleg John K or some shit with a bunch of wacky faces and animation industry references and shit.

Visuals were never the strong point of Spongebob; it was always the writing and the way it timed/edited gags and detailed-panels.

Even Ren and Stimpy was less ADHD-inducing and more subtle, here it just feels like they just throw shit at a wall to see what sticks so the wacky faces fall flat.

Why is it "bootleg John k" just because it has good animation? Why isn't SpongeBob allowed to ever evolve visually, is it supposed to stay the same for 20 years? What's wrong with trying new things on a show that's not dying anytime soon anyway?

In Sierra Leone the Militia,if they wanted to punish you, would ask if you want “long sleeves or short sleeves”
Long sleeves would result in your arm being severed by machete at the elbow
Short sleeves would result in your arm being severed by machete above the elbow

it was slippery slope, first they made city made with realistic skyscrapers instead of builds made of pieces from ships, then they made completely out of place characters what's next?

Every time I see someone genuinely defend the newest episodes of Spongebob and even try to imply it's watchable to any extent, I think back to this scene.

Gary and his sea critter friends are mimicking the lives of Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward with a miniature version of their neighborhood, and that clip is their reaction to seeing it for the first time.

Non sequiturs like this only work in cartoons if they are live action.
The gorilla, Hans the hand, Nosferatu, etc are all live action or mixed media. The change in medium tells the viewer the writer knows this is nonsense without being visually jarring.

This tooth fairy design is also obnoxious looking.

This anon gets it, same reason why South Park post 2010 looks like utter shit

I feel like mentioning anything remotely related to post-movie Spongebob causes people to pop a blood vessel and lose their shit instantly, even when it's something good/funny.

Not even Modern Simpsons or Family Guy facilitates that reaction among internet users.

Simpsons definitely does, zoomers on this site just pretend to like post-HD Family Goy to be contrarian

Spongebob died after season 3. Everybody knows this.

4 and 5 had some good episodes, anything after Atlantis is irredeemable tho

Why does modern Spongebob apparently keep trying to bank hard on its visuals and shit? Like it wants to be bootleg John K or some shit with a bunch of wacky faces and animation industry references and shit.

Visuals were never the strong point of Spongebob; it was always the writing and the way it timed/edited gags and detailed-panels.

To appeal to ADHD-addled Zoomers/Alphas, why else?

Man I hate seeing humans in SpongeBob, it worked with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy because they are supposed old geriatric parodies of Aquaman and Aqualad that’s the joke
