What the hell is this movie actually about?

Because my take-away was that the patriarchy is the only thing standing in the way of our women descending into hedonism and debauchery.

Reading/watching Eggers interviews it's clear he just wanted to make a cool period piece and attach some vague symbols to it, it can be about anything if you're gay enough.

Yes, and The Lighthouse is about toxic masculinity then the director did a sudden 180 and made The Northman which is a white nationalist movie because there's no BIPOC vikings or something
I genuinely think Eggers is the greatest filmmaker of our generation because he brings folktales and sagas to life in a painstakingly period accurate way that melts the mind of the normalgay desperately trying to project contemporary pop politics onto it

Based Eggers making cool white people movies just because.

It's based on old folk stories. The father destroyed his family by being too prideful , that was the start of the movie.

About as period accurate as it could've been working with a studio and a budget as big as he had for The Northman, like Amleth having long hair because they probably though it looked better on the (terrible) poster they made, filming in ireland instead of iceland because of covid, and of course everyone speaking in english. Despite all that Eggers indulged his period accuracy autism to the fullest extent they'd let him down to the type of wood and nails they used to build the longships

Are you implying The Lighthouse is bad? It's a fantastic movie and I don't think it's about toxic masculinity at all.

I was implying The Lighthouse is excellent and exists outside of contemporary political narratives despite people attempts to project them onto all of his movies

Accuracry on woods and nails is irrelevant if actors look like bogs and models and speak like they're in game if thrones. It makes for a cute trivia question not a good movie.

What matters most to the type of film Eggers makes is crafting a heavy atmosphere which the Northman absolutely succeeds at, I think it's the worst of his movies but still better than anything else in recent years

Lighthouse didn't age that well and the stupid reddit jokes in the script really hurt it, but it was still good. it wasn't really about toxic masculinity in the typical sense, it was more about how men can devolve into barbarism/Black personism

Don't think you'll stand a chance against demonic forces if you make yourself vulnerable like the dad did by moving out into the woods. Their religious beliefs didnt make them inherently bad people, but they got themselves killed by thinking their faith would protect them.

Because my take-away was that the patriarchy is the only thing standing in the way of our women descending into hedonism and debauchery.

Hubris and pride. Puritans moved to the Americas not because they were persecuted, but because English Christians weren't pure enough for them. Then Dad decided to move out of the colony because HE was more pure than the purist puritan. He believed God would take care of them even though he sucked at hunting and farming and wasted all his time chopping wood. All of his actions were based on pride, which led him and his family into sin. Thomasin was the least sinful of the bunch- dad was prideful, mom doubted her husband and clung to material things, Caleb lusted after his sister, the twins lied and didn't help with any tasks. Thomasin did her chores, looked after the children, and obeyed her father. All of them blamed her for what happened to them (except Caleb, but his lust was born from looking at her) and so on the end she became what they'd all expected of her.
And honestly, if puritan belief in God drove your entire family to their deaths and took everything from you, a goat telling you he can show you all the nice things in the world sounds like a pretty good deal.

Thomasin did everything she was supposed to do as a puritan girl and still got fricked over. It's about escaping the trappings of womanhood by realizing that it's all meant to subjugate you and finally being happy when you stop listening to what chuds tell you to do and indulge in what they consider sinful.

Consider that the family went to isolation because of the father's prideful insistance that he understood God's will better than everybody else in the community. Satan then claimed them all.

Not every movie, but some movies do have a "subtext". They are about something other than the visuals we watch on screen.

I mean, numerous directors have actively said what the subtexts of their movies are. They have done this for decades. Are you saying they are lying, or ?

          Anonymous

There is literally no reason to reject the idea of a movie having layers other than you're a midwit and people who think for fun make you angry. If you think subtext is "gay" you probably need to mentally advance beyond high school.

The great thing about a movie like The Witch is that it operates on both levels. You can take the movie completely literally and appreciate it as a harrowing story of a family being destroyed by a coven of witches or you can look at it more symbolically. Anyone who says "No there's just the one layer and the one way to interpret the movie and that's it!" is just a filtered smoothbrain, period. Interpret the movie whatever super-literal way you want but don't descend into anti-intellectualism. It's not "postmodern" to elevate a story by giving it subtext.

It's about pride as a sin and excessive fanaticism resulting in a backlash in the opposite direction.
It's also about religion being linked to social cohesion: in the village, ATJ's character would find a husband and marry, the kid would have friends to distract himself, the mother w/ a small baby would have a circle of supporting women, even the father could join some type of economic activity that wouldn't entail trying to be a farmer in the wilderness. Cohesion is good.

      Anonymous

If your religion exists solely for social cohesion rather than one-ness with a higher power, it's a worthless religion without any TRUE faith.
He did nothing wrong and the film is devil's propaganda to stray the righteous from the path. God protects the devout!

  20. 7 months ago

IMO the movie isn't about religion at all. That's too easy. The characters happen to be religious. That's as far as it goes. I see it as being more about the cruel indifference of nature. The further back in time you go the more people are vulnerable to predation and the elements, the fewer walls there are between you and the hostile wilderness, to the point where the old New England puritans were basically at the mercy of which way the wind decided to blow. Either your crops happen to thrive, or they don't and your entire family dies. There's no rhyme or reason to it. In the scene where William is begging God to spare his children, he is really just pleading in vain with an entirely apathetic universe. The reason why the people of the time were religious in the first place is because (particularly in the new world) conditions were so inhospitable and harsh that they had to ascribe some kind of meaning or reason to it, to come up with explanations for why some children die and some survive. The witch is really just a predator like any other and what they describe as evil is simply nature doing what nature does, callously naturally selecting almost entirely at random. It's no coincidence that the witch is into ancient pagan nature worshiping and takes the form of several different animals over the course of the film. The witch is the hostile natural world they are trying to protect themselves from with their beliefs and their religious structure, but it doesn't work. Man is nothing more than a beast, and all pretenses are gone by the end of the movie. The witches have no pretense. They frick and eat and prey upon whatever fancies them. They're just animals. They have no delusions of being godly or civilized. By the end of the film Thomasin (more out of necessity than temptation) has cast all of that aside, trading the puritanical for the barbaric. That's why she's nude at the end. I think Eggers' point is that you're fricked either way.
