I asked this yesterday and all some moron could say was muh ended where muh book ended.
Yeah no shit but the adaptation, pacing, sequencing, all was shit.

It was half a seasons worth of resolution crammed into one episode. The least they could have done was make it a double length special and actually had a chance to pace things out.

It was his younger self dreaming of his older self. Very confusing and they shouldn't have even bothered.

It didn't actually happen. It was basically a fever dream. He still had Mariko's Rosary, which he tossed irl. He was imagining what he could've wound up as, an old man full of regret and misery surrounded by people he couldn't connect with anymore.

        Why the regret and misery

No marikosama stand in jap-ano pussy, no weird rice dishes with beans and slop, no feifdom and endless honors from scorpion king, no fancy man dresses, no adventures. By this time he was happier to be in the land of the samurai than back home. I enjoyed the series and ending

He preferred to be in Japan at that point than back in England without his Fuji wife.

What is so bad about having grandkids take interest in your life before you die? The kids seemed like they wanted to bond with him. Better than staying in japan and seeing beheadings everyday. Even the one jap wanted to leave Japan

          The whole
          >He used that to kill lots of japs
Line from the kid was supposed to be him not wanting 2 little shitheads glorifying the pointless violence that was happening around him. He may have come to grow more accommodated with Japan than England, but he didn't want to just leave. IMO it was supposed to contrast the way he threatened to kill himself to protest some villagers being killed. He wasn't looking for glory in England from being the guy they sent to disrupt the Portuguese and manipulate the Japanese into working with the English instead. He wanted to choose his own path and make his own fate. By that point he wasn't really an Englishman anymore, he didn't want that glory. He's a completely different person than the one that was talking about finishing his mission in the cargo hold in episode 1.

Blueballs. 1:1 adaptation will NEVER work. You need a compromise when adapting to a different medium. You can blue ball the audience if this was a movie but a TV show where you need to invest hours? No way. You need a bombastic final battle with Toranaga winning to become the Shogun. This is why I admire Peter Jackson for adding action scenes in LotR.

So why did you stop making Mariko and Fuji threads? Because deep inside you know I'm right. So go make daily Mariko and Fuji threads just like Abatap anon for a decade to prove me wrong. If you stop even just a day. Then it means I'm right.

I enjoyed the show but it kind of feels like it had not actual plot. Like the point of the entire show was to show white guy walking around being flabbergasted by japanese culture and not any actual story progression.

Ultimately what even happened that drove the plot forward? Japanese woman killed herself which convinced another japanese woman to betray the bad guy. The end. That's like one episode's worth of plot.

That was kind of a dick move by Mariko to kill herself like that right after reigniting her love with the Anjin, they should have sailed off together into the sunset.

the story is about the formation of the shogunate which unified japan and stopped fueding clan wars. This is what prevented europeans from dividing and taking over japan like every other country in the region and consequently led to ww2 japan.

Is this the best japs can come up with? It took 10 episodes of people talking about moronic votes and customs to reach such a boring non-ending. Tom Cruise did a way better storytelling job with one simple movie.

They had to figure out some place to end the season. Weakest episode of the season I'd say; but it was tolerable.

What did you expect? It's based on a real story (Adam Smith's life in Japan), the 1600's.
    No happy endings.
There's still the Meiji Restoration to happen centuries later, Pearl Harbor / WWII / Nanking Massacre etc.

      >No happy endings.

the real history is much more interesting. He did a bunch of bribes and backroom deals to get his enemy's army to turn on him. He did not send some a woman to go commit suicide which convinced the mother of the heir (yass queen)

Toranaga does nothing in the show. Nobody does anything.

Toronaga was a 4D chess ubergenius who knew everything all along and sent Mariko to be a one woman Crimson Sky to turn the heirs mother or carer or whatever against his enemy guy by dying so Toronagas army wouldn’t get ganked like frick in the sweet battle you and I were hoping for, OP, but never got because TV is a dead medium. She wanted to die anyway after all.

He tells this to based Yabashige but says ‘Why tell a dead man the future’ because its a line Yabashige said in episode 1 when asked wether he should tell Toronaga about Blackthornes ship coming in. Essentially to tell Yabashige his spies had kept him abrest of everything Yabishige all along and that he’d been part of his game even working against him.

Yabishige in his final moments loses his fear of death and dies as a cheeky chad letting Toronaga know he to has seen through him from the start that he is a power hungry conspirator who’s wanted to be sole leader of Japan from the start and that he keeps Blackthorne as a pet and is just a murderous and racist as Yabashige.

Bookgays tell me Toronaga immediately requests the heir and that woman who saved his ass to commit sepekku immediately upon reaching Osaka. It was based and accurate depiction of the Japanese. Where their codes of practice and formalities are thin veneer over unparrarelled barbarism and a desire to die.

This entire show reminded me of GOT in the sense that it started out great, became shit after episode 3-4 but normies just ignored it, then everyone pretends it's the finale that ruined it (like Season 8 supposedly ruined GOT that was already shit since season 5)
