if we assume contemporary lore on xenobiology is correct, then the xeno should have killed it regardless. xenomophs are hostile to all lifeforms.
from that point we can suppose the cat isnt real, and instead is some kind of android put in place to spy on the crew.
however, this lore was created years after the first movie. so that makes it a plot hole.
