I've been thinking about this but one aspect of this version of Slade that I appreciate is how it focuses on him being several steps ahead of others.

I think that's part of what makes this version of him very memorable.
It actually feels like he is ahead of the titans and not just some "aha defeating me was actually part of my plan" catchphrase at the end of an episode.
An anon here had a theory once that Slade has some kind of secret apprentice in the show that we don't know about (the episode Haunted)and I can see him doing something like that.
Prieststroke also showcased how skilled he is in manipulation.
The tie-in comic had Rose show up near the end trying to take over Slade's legacy, but the Titans convince her to find her own way instead. Given how she could fight even Robin to a draw, odds are she was his first attempt but got passed over for reasons.
Also, she still had both eyes in the comic, so had it continued, there would no doubt have been a reckoning between father and daughter that ended with her losing one.
