Got passed over for succession, and it wasn't even acknowledged, everyone just ignored him and immediately began taking orders from Michael. I think if Michael hadn't sussed things out eventually Fraedo would've let them kill Michael in exchange for becoming a puppet-boss
This, he didn't get the respect that a Don's son would normally get because he was incompetent. If Michael had put him over some low-level casino rather than have him be just an entertainer, maybe he wouldn't have turned. It doesn't help that he was easy to influence either.
>Fredo is with his father when assassins working for drug kingpin Virgil Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) gun down Don Corleone in the street. Fredo, terrified, drops his gun, failing to return fire
He didn't have the heart for it, and he never put the family first.
This and the scene with Moe Green were signs of what was to come.
Nice that his father never cared that tbh, he still loved Fredo just the same
Probably because his expectations of him were so low. Killing Fredo was definitely logical, but at the end of the movie, I still felt like something wrong about that decision.
"Fredo later betrays Michael after being approached by Johnny Ola (Dominic Chianese), an associate of rival crime boss Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg). Ola and Roth tell Fredo that Michael is being particularly difficult in business negotiations between Roth's organization and the Corleone family. Fredo secretly agrees to aid them in exchange for compensation; shortly afterward, an attempt is made on Michael's life. The film never reveals what specific assistance Fredo provides Ola and Roth against Michael, how much he knew of their intentions, or what he was offered in return.
While in Havana negotiating with Roth, Michael discovers that Fredo is the family traitor behind the assassination attempt on him. After telling Michael that he has never met Ola, Fredo later carelessly tells Geary that he had been to a nightclub with Ola. Michael overhears the conversation and realizes that Fredo betrayed him to Roth."
wtf are u talking about? Fredo tried to have Mike killed. That same attempt could have killed his wife and kids, remember the bullets smashing into his bedroom window. That's it, it's over, he needs to die. If Michael was the type to forgive someone for something like that the family/mob wouldn't last long either. You might be right in forgiving someone 5 out of 6 times but 1 time you will be wrong and the traitor will stab you in the back again - and people will say you only had yourself to blame. Reading the comments its like yall forget Fredo was behind an assassination attempt that entailed machine gun fire into the family home.
NTA but I kind of agree and I find Michael to be a tragic character as he is misunderstood. He took over the family at a time when everything was crumbling around him and while viewers brand him as paranoid I do understand his actions. What was he supposed to do when everybody wanted him killed?
Fredo didn't know they were going to try and kill Michael. Fredo is an idiot, he was only a threat because he was close to Michael and easy to manipulate. Once he's out of the loop he's no longer a threat. He didn't try to kill Michael
Agreed he was an idiot but he also enabled the hit on Michael. (exactly how we can only conjecture but it is wrong to imply it was just stupidity/incompetence. The vovie and Fredo himself with his regret make it clear, it was deliberate treachery) In the script he says he thought it would just be a kidnapping (because that's really better Fredo, fkking moron). Idiot or not, he knew what he was doing and the reasons for it were weakness and jealousy. He is a betrayer of family and deserved his bullet.

Because his father put the family first and he wanted someone who would do that to run the family.
Anyway, Godfather isn't a film where you get to ask >why didnt the eagles fly the cannolis into mordor
It's all pretty well-explained.
Remember that scene of young Don Vito? Sonny was shown to be strong and furious whereas Fredo was shown to be very weak and frail from the start. Fredo should've been the one who went to College, not Michael. He really never was cut out for that type of life. The only time he showed bravery was when he accepted his death at the hands of his own brother without any sign of resentment.

I watched the movie recently and I don't think it is clear he understands he's going to get whacked when Michael asks his son that he cannot go fishing with Fredo. While the scene is set up poetically, with Fredo reciting a prayer, it seems that in his mind it's just another day fishing
Gangsters are raised, not made. Fredo was never to be considered for succession because his weakness would have been apparent from the start. Plenty of IRL monsters had family that they did not directly involve in their matters for this exact reason, deciding instead to pay exorbitant amounts of money to guarantee their protection from ruthless enemies so that they can live normal lives.

It's never right to kill your own brother. Could've just exiled him after their mother died and banned him from returning to the US
