Caspere knew that Reggie muthafrickin LeDoux did another man's lawn in a flat circle and past a certain age, it could've been different.

I didn't know what the big deal was until an older gentlemen in the neighborhood took it upon himself to mow my lawn...

It implies Marty is neglecting his familial duties, which Marty, who tries to live by conservative values, takes offense in. This is however juxtaposed by Marty neglecting his family in the first place because of his affair, which makes him additionally distrustful of whatever Rust and his wife have been up to.

Rust absolutely would have known that he was going to piss Marty off by spending time alone with his wife and mowing his lawn. It was a dick move. Marty was well within his rights to be furious with him.

That was a very out of character moment, too. A lot of Season 1 really goes to shit if you think about it, especially towards the final 3 episodes.

Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's so atmospheric and well acted that its flaws can quite easily be overlloked. A bit like an exceptionally attractive woman who gets away with behaviour that her plainer counterpart wouldn't.

I don't know if I'd give it such a broad pass, anon. If the ending of a story is so bad as this one was then the entire thing is tainted in retrospect. No, the destination is always of maximum importance. The final episode being a Saturday Morning Cartoon showdown with the fat hillbilly and them shrugging their shoulders about accomplishing nothing and then saying all's right with the world was too bad for me to ignore. In contrast, S2 started really badly but ended in beautiful fashion which enriched what came before.

It's not out of character at all. Rust is a desperately lonely man who lost his wife and daughter and the dream of a family that he always wanted. Marty has what Rust wants most in this world, he was trying to live Marty's life, if only for a day. Marty couldn't see that

        Anonymous

Quite the contrary. Rust said it himself, seeing Marty's family wasn't so bad after all. It probably reminded him of when he still had his daughter. Back when he was happy.

Rust had a lil bit of the tism and no real social contact for years except for the dregs of society like corrupt pigs and prostitutes

He may have been a depressed oddball but he was undeniably intelligent and good at reading people. He knew what he was doing. Similar to when he told Marty in the previous episode that he smelled of pussy, he just wanted to piss Marty off and get under his skin to see how he'd react.

I took as testing Marty's beliefs in contrast with how he actually lives his life. Marty has created a false image of himself and Rust saw right though it. He claims to be a family man but he ignored his wife and regularly cheats on her. He claims to be a Christian yet Rust is the only one with a crucifix in his home, there are no Christian symbols in Marty's home. Rust was poking at his hypocrisy, which Marty himself is very aware of but pushes away so he doesn't have to address it. Rust subtly called him out on this and Marty flipped because he had no defence

This. Marty was right to be angry that Rust was endearing himself to his family at this point in their friendship. Rust wasn't a stranger, but Marty didn't completely trust him yet. Rust got too familiar too fast. Marty could have explained the problem a bit better, but Rust was still a little out of line.
