He recognised that the Vietnamese would do anything to win and that the US would not. He used the natives to wage total war.

His side wasn't fully committed to the war. The Viet Cong were. Worse, his side were a bunch of hypocrites who would use lies and euphemisms to hide and paper over the reality of the war. His contempt for liars is very clear in the tape that's played. Willard himself has contempt for the lies and hypocrisy of the war. Even the presentation of Willard's mission is done in an opaque way. It's given to him in such a way that its reality will always be denied. Forever.

Kurtz and Willard are similar. Not a deep observation, but it's important for understanding things. It's why Willard doesn't try to kill him right away. The "villain" is low-key making sense.

This. Willard ends Kurtz's life not to complete his mission, he ends Kurtz seeking to give him a merciful death. At the moment Kurtz dies, both are free of their responsibilities and Willard will be able to carry Kurtz's last will and message to his family.

You're both wrong. It's not about winning or losing. It's about two civilizations clashing. The barbaric and the advanced. That's something the Russians will never understand. They think that killing the whole world in a nuclear war is the solution to their problems, because then everyone will live as badly as they do. That's why they attacked Ukraine. Not because there's any land there. But because Ukrainians were able to live without them, and Russians can't forgive that.

    >As long as our officers and troops performs tours of duty limited to one year, they will remain dilettantes in war and tourists in Vietnam. As long as cold beer, hot food, rock and roll and all the other amenities remain the expected norm, our conduct of the war will gain only impotence. The wholesale and indiscriminate use of firepower will only increase the effectiveness of the enemy and strengthen their resolve to prove the superiority of an agrarian culture against the world's, greatest technocracy.

He knew that the only way to win the war was to exterminate all brutes. TVD. Officially, the U.S never had boots on the ground in NV. It was a meaningless war because the politicians never embraced total war and thus, it was an unwinnable war. Charlie would never give up. This is alluded in the plantage scene

Indeed, the US forces were not even allowed to invade North Vietnam, due to the threat of starting a nuclear war with the Soviets. Added to that, they couldn't even hold the positions they took from VC in the south. The war was all about propping up South Vietnam. Of course, the Vietnamese didn't give a shit about the 'rules of war', so they exploited the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and Cambodia. Also, some 'military experts/historians' claim the Gen. Westmoreland was incompetent. With those constrictions, I can't see how the US and SV could have won against the reds. Having a military draft was a fricking disaster and guaranteed that the US public would turn against the war.

Ain't that the truth. Though it was a necessary evil during the Cold War, 9/11 let them resurrect it and make it ten times more insane. Talk about overkill!

I do wonder why people hate that scene so much.
It's comfy, gives some history and context about the country and is the last outpost of civilization before shit gets crazy.
