The Shining isn't that great of a story. It's quality lies in it's filmmaking, it's atmosphere driven by the sets and cinematography. Every moment is dripping with intrigue because of the visuals of the hotel. Not to sound too reddit, but the setting is a major character itself.

We watched Highlander 1 and 2 then CTHD, so it was the standout film of the evening. The fights were beautiful and the acting was excellent. It's definitely still the best martial arts fantasy epic. Maybe Hero is a close second
