Three major lessons: 1) no man left behind is great for morale but bad for actually savings lives; 2) superior numbers with simple but practical weapons is better than high-tech/high-skills ; and 3) don't engage in a fight where you don't really know what you're getting into.
The movie is basically two hours of a situation continually going from bad to worse because someone gets hurt and they send rescuers who end up needing to be rescued who end up needing to be rescued etc etc. It's also a perfect example of the U.S. throwing all its expensive toys and the might of the military at an operation that is basically about snatching a guy from a building and having all that fancy hardware and highly trained operatives count for shit because no amount of training or helicopters is gonna withstand vastly superior numbers shooting lots of bullets/missiles at you. All the Seals/Delta training in the world isn't gonna help you face down a firing squad by yourself which is basically the situation they're in the whole movie. And lastly, it was a HUGE failure of military intelligence and international affairs that sent those guys into a war where they didn't really get the stakes, didn't really understand the terrain/situation, and didn't get their enemy, and they underestimated all of it. It was arrogance.
Europe was tearing itself apart and America reluctantly took the reigns. Was their leadership perfect? No. But they did the best they could with the cards they were dealt.
