Paratroopers are by their nature always surrounded and must be quickly relieved by ground forces (preferably combined arms) in order to remain combat effective / alive. The only real exception is if they seize an airfield and establish and hold the airhead long enough for reinforcements, heavy tanks, supplies to be airlanded—easier said than done (see Russian VDV attacks on airports at the beginning of the current war).
SVP is inaccurate, in the real D-day there weren't Germans in firing range of the beach. They got off the boats and advanced several yards, then started getting mowed down
