There's an interview with him in the manga that his wife wrote about their relationship where he talks about this and he really was only kinda-sort of frustrated with otaku for a brief period in the 90's when he was burning out making Eva. Even then he was never an advocate of giving up on your passions, his critcism of otaku was more about the insular, autistic lifestyle they impose on themselves.

He fronted like that for a while but most of it is lingo he picked up from others. It's a very outside-look-in as will be obvious if you keep reading until his later books were he starts to sperg about "muh womyn in comics".
Mind you he's pretty much the exact same type of guy right now except with a twitter-drone twist, he got hard-ghosted by Jill Thompson and is seething that she owns the half the rights to Beasts of Burden and won't hand over them to him for free.
To be entirely fair it’s sort of meta because eltingville was based on himself and his friends and he’s pretty open about it. He just seems like a very unhappy person and it shows, both in his interactions with the world and his work.
At least he made some iconic characters and stories.

Nah only the sidebit where he mocks his old art club is based on his actual friend circle and you can tell it's a lot milder in it's mockery.
The Eltingville stuff is his outside view of convention obsessives and rumors with a fair bit of hatred of Staten island whiteys going by his interviews.
I'd say overall Eltingville is the better story, but ai really appreciate Anime Club's relatable angle with having a niche interest, and the only other people around you who share it are freaks with no filter or self-awareness.
I prefer Eltingville. The much more raw and gritty feeling combined with tons of geeky references and dark comedy is something I haven't seen anywhere else.
Eltingville was written by a real comic nerd who understood what it meant to be one and was more real than KC Green writing what he understood to be how anime nerds acted, maybe, I never saw him talk about anime so it felt a little shallow, like second hand stories he'd heard

I always enjoy the nostalgia trip I get from reading Eltingville, it's nice little time capsule at times about how fandom used to be. Getting news from once a month magazines instead of constantly drip fed, all the hardcore collecting of the 90s, the older tv shows and movies they talk about.
It of course wasn't necessarily better in every way, but there's an odd fondness i have for it

Kind of odd or a missed opportunity that he barely touched on the evolution of nerd franchises from the 90s to the 00s to the 10s, part of it was glossing stuff over, part of it was due to the timeskip
We got the superhero movie boom, Matrix, LOTR, Harry Potter, Twilight, the rise of streaming and death of video, the rise of anime, etc
In the final issues they rail against casual fans. A lot of focus is just on how bad Bill became but the underlying theme is the guys at the comic store getting worse as their hobbies become mainstream. There's a whole page where they scare a girl out of the store, and Joe says afterwards she was a Fake Geek Girl. Bill of all people was ready to gi e her the benfit of the doubt
idk why but this one scene in the epilogue always stuck with me, something about Jerry having genuine passion in his interests and having the others just brush it off hit hard for me, God I can recall so many times I've opened up to people about my interests just for it to be ignored
This thread made me go back and reread the whole thing again and I realized Pete and Josh really at fault
Pete isn't even a PA and those guys are the lowest of the low in film production and get paid dirt and Pete is below that, while Josh is just a blogger that spends all his time kissing people asses and begging for favors but they both stand up for each other when a snarky comment is thrown their way
Contrast with how Bill is treated, while he's talking about what he's up to they constantly interrupt him to talk shit and constantly talk down his buying and reselling gig as if it's as low as you can get when they arent really in any better position

and it still amazes me that the author knows so much trivia before the internet really took off, he must really have been in the deep end himself
He fronted like that for a while but most of it is lingo he picked up from others. It's a very outside-look-in as will be obvious if you keep reading until his later books were he starts to sperg about "muh womyn in comics".
Mind you he's pretty much the exact same type of guy right now except with a twitter-drone twist, he got hard-ghosted by Jill Thompson and is seething that she owns the half the rights to Beasts of Burden and won't hand over them to him for free.
To be entirely fair it’s sort of meta because eltingville was based on himself and his friends and he’s pretty open about it. He just seems like a very unhappy person and it shows, both in his interactions with the world and his work.
At least he made some iconic characters and stories.

I'd say overall Eltingville is the better story, but ai really appreciate Anime Club's relatable angle with having a niche interest, and the only other people around you who share it are freaks with no filter or self-awareness.

I prefer Eltingville. The much more raw and gritty feeling combined with tons of geeky references and dark comedy is something I haven't seen anywhere else.
Eltingville was written by a real comic nerd who understood what it meant to be one and was more real than KC Green writing what he understood to be how anime nerds acted, maybe, I never saw him talk about anime so it felt a little shallow, like second hand stories he'd heard

Kind of odd or a missed opportunity that he barely touched on the evolution of nerd franchises from the 90s to the 00s to the 10s, part of it was glossing stuff over, part of it was due to the timeskip
We got the superhero movie boom, Matrix, LOTR, Harry Potter, Twilight, the rise of streaming and death of video, the rise of anime, etc
For comics alone we got Infinite Crisis, One Year Later, New 52, DCYou and Rebirth onward just on the DC side.
In the final issues they rail against casual fans. A lot of focus is just on how bad Bill became but the underlying theme is the guys at the comic store getting worse as their hobbies become mainstream. There's a whole page where they scare a girl out of the store, and Joe says afterwards she was a Fake Geek Girl. Bill of all people was ready to gi e her the benfit of the doubt
