The first 4 were perfect. The rest had lots of good moments IMO
only the finale was bad*
Genndy is much better and writing episodes than series.
He probably wrote all of the first 4 episodes at once and then split it into 4. Then he realized he could make a """"whole""""" season out of it
I honestly think the entire season was solid. It just felt like Genndy b***hed out from either a happy ending or a morbid conclusion, he straddled the line and it just sort of stopped
the whole "10,000 b.c." Egypt, Celt, Vikings etc. deal bothered me a lot more than Mira.
Actually, it was mostly the giant ship Egyptians with war slaves deal: lasted way too long and would have not been a good episode otherwise. Vikings (though it would have been better if the scorpion was something else) and one off Celts were acceptable.
Does the final season use the fact its on Adult Swim to its advantage? Any more mature adult themes or anything? Or is it basically more of the cartoon network show?
>Does the final season use the fact its on Adult Swim to its advantage? Any more mature adult themes or anything?
Yes, he kills living things instead of just robots, and there's blood instead of oil. Also, the ending was very dark and mature.
>Also, the ending was very dark and mature.
People actually believe this. Just because it worked in Gurren Lagann doesn't mean it's going to work for a character that was only in half of the season.
t. someone who clearly didn't religiously watch the show as a kid and understand all the times he had the chance to kill Aku and/or go back in time but didn't because he realised that wasn't actually the point
I think he just ran out of ideas.
Or the studio pitched an idea to him that he couldn't really say no to since he just wanted to finish the story and they'd already agreed to let him make it bloody
When I was a kid I switched off this show immediately because I just wasn't interested in the art style. When I finally gave it a chance after the fifth season was announced I couldn't believe how well written it was. Now I know it was always beloved and it's won Emmys because of its quality. I was a moronic kid.
The season trailer is probably better overall than the season itself. Many such cases.
>wasn't interested in the art style >was a moronic kid
Indeed, but you've atoned for that sin now
Ashi is just a boring character. There's nothing to her. Even if she had more time to get fleshed out I doubt it would make her any more interesting because a character like her just takes away from a show like this.
Exactly, no one cares about Ashi. It was one final season to wrap up Jack's epic story, and instead we have to focus for a huge portion of it on some new character that isn't nearly as compelling. It makes all of her importance and scenes feel forced. If they'd pulled off Ashi well it would have been different, but no dice.
I thought it was based that as soon as Jack gets his chance to kill Aku again, he doesn't squander it. No monologue, no wieneriness, no theatrics. He just kill the mother fricker.
I don't get not liking the art style. It's like, but obviously different than Over the Garden Wall, in that the background shots are largely what makes it so good.

>jack finds out he cannot go back >gets catatonic >aku finds out about it and moves in to kill him >people who jack saved in the past episodes also find out about it >fight ensues >jack sees this and wakes up >deals final blow to aku >the end >time skip >small village in the midst of rebuilding >bandits attack >wanderer takes off his hat and picks up his sword >it's jack >freeze frame >SAMURAI JACK JACK JACK JACK JACK >roll credits
Gennedy fundamentally misunderstood both the core appeal of the original seasons and the story itself. This is a guy who barely remembered the god damned Portal Guardian episode when asked about it prior to season 5's release. Nobody wanted a shitty love story with Deus Ex Machina Girl being the key to everything. We wanted to see King Jack prove himself worthy and return to the past.
Also when fans called out that it was weird to see Jack having a crisis about killing non-robots when there were at least 2 episodes where it is either heavily implied or explicitly shown that Jack killed humans or living creatures, Gennedy basically said on Twitter "oh shit I forgot about those episodes."
NIGEER WHAT?!? You didn't even watch your own fricking show again prior to writing season 5?!
The fact that it even happened is the point. Jack never showed remorse except maybe once, he's a stone cold killer trained since child. Him having a crisis over killing the daughters means the lead writer did not watch his own show prior to writing that episode.
Yes, we can blame the lead creator of a show for not remembering key elements of his own creation AND being too lazy to even watch his own show before writing the final season.
>We wanted to see King Jack prove himself worthy and return to the past.
Disagree. Should've taken the King Jack comic route and had him come to the conclusion that he can't go back to the past. It could tie into a greater message about not constantly thinking about the best and your regrets and rather focus on the future and the good that you can still do. Maybe him killing Aku could make him age again (or maybe pull a Lava Monster and have him age rapidly after killing Aku, signifying that he is finally free).
>Lava monster
The episodes that just outright have gods/demi-gods show up all rule. You don't even have to watch the award winning ones and you'll still see some of the series best episodes.
They teased a bloody grimdark series, and it felt like execs told Gennedy to back off. Even the first four episodes, while they were entertaining, did not go that hard into grimdark.
Agreed on too much focus on ashi and ashi not being likeable enough.
The final fight was a bit underwhelming imo. Too much going on but I didn't feel any tension

same thing that ruined Primal season 2: a female sidekick/love interest
Primal season 2 was excellent. Can't wait for season 3.
Such shit taste
but enough about you
Agree,season was fricking horrible.
the whole "10,000 b.c." Egypt, Celt, Vikings etc. deal bothered me a lot more than Mira.

Romance.
I don't know. I haven't watched all of it. I do like the art style, and the long shots with not a whole lot habbening. It's the kind of film I'd make.
You're moronic. It's the perfect series, including the last season.
Genndy is a hack.
nah you are
Does the final season use the fact its on Adult Swim to its advantage? Any more mature adult themes or anything? Or is it basically more of the cartoon network show?
There’s more sexual innuendo and blood, but nothing really rising above PG-13
>Does the final season use the fact its on Adult Swim to its advantage? Any more mature adult themes or anything?

shut up, moron
It was a great finale.
This. So glad they didn't end it on some cliched "and everyone lived happily ever after" shit. This ending had more meaning.
it felt more like the ending to an old samurai movie, Japanese cinema is often very bleak
Agreed. The game actually had an alt. ending for people who didn't like the original one so I guess that's a small bonus.
>It was a great finale if you ignore the way that it made no sense and actively made Jack's entire quest completely pointless
ftfy
His quest was to destroy Aku and get back to the past, and it was a success.
t. someone who clearly didn't religiously watch the show as a kid and understand all the times he had the chance to kill Aku and/or go back in time but didn't because he realised that wasn't actually the point
It copied the ending of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Genddy being a weeb there's about 0% chance he didn't knew. So no, it was a weak ending.
>movie has a dog in it
>every other movie copies that movie
I think he just ran out of ideas.

What a hack

I thought it was based that as soon as Jack gets his chance to kill Aku again, he doesn't squander it. No monologue, no wieneriness, no theatrics. He just kill the mother fricker.
It was never going to have a satisfying ending with only 10 episodes. Not even the Guardian could have salvaged it.
>jack finds out he cannot go back
>gets catatonic
>aku finds out about it and moves in to kill him
>people who jack saved in the past episodes also find out about it

Reminder that in the video game ending Ashi lives and it is considered Canon.

I'm beggin' ya to touch a tiddy.
I'll touch your saggy man boobs
I’d agree but Jack moves on pretty quickly after killing the first daughter
He shows remorse, but keeps going
The fact that it even happened is the point. Jack never showed remorse except maybe once, he's a stone cold killer trained since child. Him having a crisis over killing the daughters means the lead writer did not watch his own show prior to writing that episode.
To be fair those episodes were like almost a decade old, you can't blame him for misremembering stuff.
Laziness isn't an excuse, moron.
Yes, we can blame the lead creator of a show for not remembering key elements of his own creation AND being too lazy to even watch his own show before writing the final season.

pretty awful take ngl
They teased a bloody grimdark series, and it felt like execs told Gennedy to back off. Even the first four episodes, while they were entertaining, did not go that hard into grimdark.
the shitty forced romance became the main plot.
They stole the ending from Gurren Laggan but it didn't even make sense because it was some sort of time paradox.
They only gave him ten episodes. He probably needed another season.
>he didn't end it how I wanted him to therefore it was bad
moronic manchildren
>racist voice acting
not touching it, you're not gonna cancel me
Um, sweaty, Phil Lamarr said whites can't voice Black characters, but there's nothing wrong with Black folks voicing chinks 😉
Agreed on too much focus on ashi and ashi not being likeable enough.
The final fight was a bit underwhelming imo. Too much going on but I didn't feel any tension
waifuing the girl too frickin hard
