Nothing. The first season had some cringe, but it got progressively better and stuff like Mongolia, Colombia and Seamen are among their best special.

It was getting better each week it seemed. The glaring weak point was the celebrity interview segment which was even worse than old Top Gear somehow.

I didn't mind it in the first seasons. It was stupid, but at least it was over in two minutes. Then in the second season it was suddenly a whole segment lasting 15 minutes with mostly literally whos. Skip!

A lot of the fun of Top Gear was the DIY aspect of it because of the shitty BBC budgets they were given.
Having a blank cheque from Bezos to do whatever the frick you want takes away a lot of the ingenuity.
    >Shall we build makeshift motorhomes and race them along shitty country lanes in Yorkshire?
    >Nah frick that, Jeff just bought us new bugattis and our own polynesian island, lets do a segment there

That is definitely true but kind of unavoidable, they aren't those people anymore. There was no way to recreate that feel.

First season was overscripted and sometimes just not very funny. Second got better and honestly the third season was more or less on par with classic TG quality imo

It's alright. I'll watch anything with the lads in it, it's just it feels 100 times more scripted than the original top gear specials were.
And yes I know the top gear specials were mostly scripted but it just felt less artifical.

How did Top Gear manage to have the greatest soundtrack of all time?

The budget for licensing must have been absurd?

Nah, BBC has an across the board license with multiple music/media conglomerates that give it access to pretty much any western song produced that they renew every few years. This gives every show produced by the BBC the right to use almost any music it wants.

they only do those types of specials now but Amazon keeps giving them too much budget for them so they have been very hit or miss

I still love the one where they buy those old Porsches and Hammond's keeps breaking down

New special is coming but who cares, really? Solo stuff has been pretty good with Jams dropping Oh Cook 2 recently. Haven't seen it but the first season with cupboard lady and autism was pretty fun as well as his travel shows. Jezza and Hammond can go climb a wall of dicks.

They make magic together, but James is the best solo man. Jeremy needs somebody to play off, and Richard is a wet fart without the other two.

        >Jeremy needs somebody to play off
True. His farming show is made by the side characters like Caleb and Charlie while James can go on about a 2 stroke engine in a moped for two hours and I'll watch it.
Hammond on his own is rough, but I'm still watching his workshop show.

Hammond was better before the accident that hit his brain, and he's an excellent presenter when there's a script to follow, but he's not good solo and needs people to play off of more than the other two. He had a show called Brainiac that's pretty fun to watch.

season 1 was utter garbage, it was clear they didn't know what to do with all the money amazon was throwing at them. Even the namibia special was underwhelming
seasons 2 and 3 were mostly okay
mongolia, vietnam, and colombia specials were nearly old top gear tier. All the other ones are somewhere in between or just straight up bad. Carnage a trois was okay but that was more like a really long version of the Puegot segment they did on TG than an actual special

This show should have never had a studio audience portion that was so weird and because they were trying to copy talk shows which they were not. You can still do the celebrity race portion but you don't need an audience for that.

    too much money
top gear has always been scripted but it didn't feel like it, and a lot of stuff happens especially in old top gear where you know it has to have been an authentic moment because no producer would ever have greenlit it. that stuff is basically missing.
the celebrity segment was always horrible, i was really hyped in s1 when they did a gag about the celebrity dying and thought "oh good they learned and are able to grow and are scrapping that whole waste of time" but nope, keeps going for the entire show + turns into a long segment after s1. great, fantastic.
it's mostly the budget. the specials are generally quite good, especially mongolia and columbia, it's worth watching at least, just not as good as the original.

They lost the BBC connections to film anywhere in the world pretty much unobstructed. Amazon doesn't have this privilege so the amount of time, effort and money required reduced this from a series to doing only specials
