      >That whole build up
      >Pitiful fire breath that seems to only mildly irritate the other monster
The same post-TDK bullshit that still plagues Hollywood
      >If I make it lifeless, lame and boring, it's sophisticated!
      >What? No of course I'm not gonna try to make it any more intelligent.

I like how everyone was so disappointed by how badly nerfed his atomic breath was, they had to retcon it for KOTM. The explanation that since the muto's had evolved to parasitize Godzillas, their EMP field was ACHULLY a field that inhibits Godzilla nuclear power, more than it was an actual emp. Like if there were 2 or 3 more Muto's in that fight he wouldn't be able to use the breath at all, and his healing factor and endurance are basically gone completely, as their combined anti godzilla fields would just stop most of the nuclear fission in his body. Retroactively making the muto's probably the most dangerous kaiju for godzilla in any medium, and with that retcon it's really bizarre he didn't hunt down the two before they even hatched if he was aware of them, or not just splattering the one muto that appeared at the end of KOTM on sight, just to be safe.

i think it's more like shin godzilla embarrassed legendary so much in regards to atomic breath

            Anonymous

Shin definitely put the atomic breath in a new level of destructiveness, but the reason they had to excuse 2014's was because Gareth Edwards was a midwit and was forced to add it to the movie last minute by Toho because he originally wanted Godzilla to shoot lightning. Because Edwards though "lightning is a real natural thing, and atomic breath isn't". So the effect was added last minute and only appears twice. They didn't plan any sequences around him using the breath earlier in the film.

              >he originally wanted Godzilla to shoot lightning.
damn, that could have been kino if we're imagining it in the form of a concentrated blast like the classic atomic laser, just electrified.

supposedly the first atomic breath shot still has elements of the lightning effect as his tail is charging up from the tail to the head, and you see lightning outline godzilla in silhouette. edwards wanted him to be like a tesla coil

                Anonymous

maybe that was part of the original reasoning for him not using the blast until that specific point, the idea being he can utilize the elements to power himself and that just happened to be an opportunity to do so.
it's a cool idea, furthering the idea that Godzilla is actually some sort natural God-like entity in this universe.

its good. it’s still laser-y enough to still be cool and not just literally look like blue fire. I know what you mean though, if they were gonna get so close to the point of still not being ‘realistic’, why not go all out. its something different I suppose

it was fine but the atomic breath was super lame

Cranston and Godzilla were the only good parts of the movie and they are both only in it combined for like 30 minutes

Hiring some hack whose big claim to fame was a shitty movie that was hot on the indie circuit called "Monsters" to helm it.

Gareth Edwards is a complete hack.

Make it look like Cranston was main character in the movie. He’s hardly in it. 2 hour plus movie. Godzilla in it for 12 minutes!!!!!!!

Bad godzilla design shown in minimal runtime and when he's on you can barely see him.

needed to be 2 male muto's in hawaii, and have godzilla kill one at the airport scene. Movie would have made a billion dollars if it wasn't so goddamned boring

I always felt cutting away from the airport fight killed this movie. Give a good 4 - 6 minute kaiju action sequence and the movie probably is much better received.

It's just as much of an insult as the 1998 one. I gave the 2019 one a shot and it was ecen worse. I refuse to watch these two kong vs zilla movies. I'll stick to Showakino

Bad cinematography during the monster scenes that doesn't let you see anything.

I genuinely don't understand the appeal of revisiting 2014 outside of watching brightened monster sequences compiled on YouTube. There is nothing about the rest of that movie is worth enduring.

It was literally the only decent entry of the monsterverse, the rest was slop.

It's tone was at least somewhat grounded and wasn't goofy and nonsensical.

          >serious automatically means it's better
The tone in 2014 was boring. Godzilla movies should have wacky sci-fi elements.

            Minus One proves you wrong

Minus One had better characters than 2014, Godzilla is way more threatening and memorable than the MUTOs as a threat. 2014 is still a giant monster fight movie at its core, but just teases the fights until the end and the rest is a very basic video gamey military plot

The movie had really excellent sets and production design for most of the first half. The Japan exclusion zone, the initial mystery with the power plant, are all really fricking great. The building tension of things steadily getting worse, The monster hatches, it can frick with electricity and sensors, and it can fly, and it stole some nukes, the mc is just trapped in this nightmare scenario where these things just keep following him back to the states.

Everything after the Airport sequence is fricking boring though. The sub plot with the wife and kid doesn't really add anything other than give him more family member to put in peril, after these things have already killed his mother and father. He doesn't really need more motivating factors. Honestly Brody's just too fricking stoic for a guy that just found out monsters are real, and that they've killed his parents, and are going to kill his wife and son too. But he never once breaks from the cartoon stoic soldier man persona, and never actually has to put his commitment to family at risk because conveniently all roads just kind of open to him so he can get back to san fran and also fight the monsters at the same time, while his wife is theoretically in danger, but is never directly involved other than hiding in a shelter?

I have no problem with the amount of screen time Godzilla had, I was disappointed with the human drama. I know it's a known thing that the human scenes in Godzilla movies are usually the weakest, but thd way they piched this movie at SDCC 2012 made it sound like it was a grounded drama about a family that gets caught up in Godzilla's path and a lot of the shots of Godzilla would befrom the ground looking up. I fact i'm probably downplaying how well they were sold this movie. Instead Bryan Cranston dies 10 minutes into the movie, Elizabeth Olsen and the kid are absent through a lot of the movie, and Kick-Ass jumping from setpiece to setpiece.

One good scene can't make a whole movie good
