too self indulgent for its own good. the runtime was way longer than necessary. most of the gross out scenes felt out of place. and the bit at the end where the guy sees the future of cinema and cries tears of joy was very cheesy and corny. wasn't bad though but when do a swing and a miss on a big film like this the miss is gonna seem worse than it actually is. amazing soundtrack though

If you had watched to movie you’d know that Diego Calva was the protagonist. He had the most screen time. I’m not sure why the director thought anyone would give a frick about what the valet thought about what happened in the movie but that’s what happened.

Put simply, it turned out Chazelle was a hack. He got lucky with Whiplash, then he ripped off Umbrellas of Cherbourg, then he made a mediocre biopic, then he ripped off PTA and thought he could get away with it because PTA ripped off Scorsese. He failed.
Side note: ripping off PTA as your 4th movie is incredibly embarrassing. Do it as your first movie, or maybe your second. By your 4th movie you already need to be a master making wholly unique movies in your prime. Instead your failing to rip off a GOAT whos not only still alive but still only in his 50s? homosexual.
