The only "wrong" thing is the same problem every movie had these past two months >released with heavy competition with no time to breathe between weeks >awful marketing that didn't do the film justice >budget way too high for it to make back its investment
Even your avg millennial won't care because you need good designs to make romcoms work, which this movie doesn't have. Nobody seriously cares a romance between random blobs of water and fire
It's about a second generation migrant korean woman whinging about how she faces "micro aggressions" in America and how she defied her dying grandmother's wish and married a bla-- a water. Somehow, this didn't appeal to general audiences.

What the frick is up with the generational trauma shit and asians in like every movie now? Is it really just that the rich privileged ones only every had being yelled at for not getting straight As and kids thinking their food was "weird" as their absolute worst problems growing up?
This, I'm so sick of directors/creators turning their personal experiences or trauma into shows or movies. I also get annoyed at how most of the creators who do this always act like their experiences is indicative of everyone from their specific culture.
It's about a second generation migrant korean woman whinging about how she faces "micro aggressions" in America and how she defied her dying grandmother's wish and married a bla-- a water. Somehow, this didn't appeal to general audiences.
Akchually It was about how Amber thought she couldn't be the girl she thought her parents expected her to be, as she repeteadly thought the shop was her father's dreamBut when she confronted her fathter that she didn't wanted the shop, and felt sad that she couldn't keep the dream shop, the father replies with "YOU were always the dream, not the shop"
I found that very heartwarming, the few good things about the movie
Yea he built that shop from literally NOTHING. It was a ruin and then he poured his life into making it a shop to serve his people. But she has to have that drive to "be her own person" or some shit.
All this does is make the Writer/Director look like a petulant little shit not understanding the hard work his family put into their lives.
>Nobody will know her or her art.
Chances are she will be more known for her art than some restaurant in a poor neighborhood.
True!
To put salt to the wound, we NEVER saw any sign that Amber wanted to be an artist, she always wanted to run her father's shop.

The whole point is that her entire life was shaped around her dad's shop and she never even thought for herself, and once she did get out of her bubble she realized she wanted other things.
Yeah, sure. But it is the director's job to SHOW ME that she had that remote thought about being an artist at some point BEFORE she mentions it on the movie. And that didn't happen
>Yeah, sure. But it is the director's job to SHOW ME that she had that remote thought about being an artist at some point BEFORE she mentions it on the movie.
It's not a movie about a person who did art as a hobby until they found out it was their passion, it's about a sheltered person who discovers she wants more of her life than the place she was stuck in their whole life. It could have been art, it could have been something else, but the point is she was never gonna be happy just doing what's expected of her with no will of her own. Throughout the whole movie, she puts more attention to her dad being proud of her and no longer working himself to death than actually caring about the shop. That's really what mattered to her, and in the end she got that while still being able to broaden her horizons.

You're the kind of people that whispers sweet nothings to directors, being the yesman to their stupid whims.
We get bad movies because of people like you.
Also a waste of dubs.

Yeah, frick me for understanding the storytelling of a kid's movie. I should be more like you and not pay attention to anything, then complain when I'm not being spoonfed all information.
The only waste here is you.

Yes, moron. The director has to Show me EVERYTHING that might change the plot or works for the charcter's arc. If not anything the "character finds out of her own" comes aout pulling it from the ass.
Issue with the shop thing is how it's all set up. Shop is a centrally important place to the family. Then that drifts away with nothing to take its place.
You need a framing device for a love story. Movie loses that.
Same with director/writer other film. Good Dinosaur just a series of smaller stories without a larger framework.
it was still boring. There's nothing wrong with emotional stuff, pixar has done plenty of times, but you still need some other plot behind, something you know, more creative
What young child would ever get excited to watch an urban romance movie about talking fire and water people? For that matter, what adult would care for that idea either? It feels like it isn't a movie created for any audience, but a bunch of derivative stereotypes thrown together. "Oh, it's a Pixar movie, so it has to have talking... things. And it's also got to be deep, so, it's about... racism". This feels like it was made by people who grew up watching Pixar, rather than people who want to make a family movie. Frankly, I just think this is a waste of time and extremely tedious. If your idea doesn't sound inherently cool to a child and clever to an adult, don't bother making it into a movie.
>"Oh, it's a Pixar movie, so it has to have talking... things. And it's also got to be deep, so, it's about... racism". This feels like it was made by people who grew up watching Pixar, rather than people who want to make a family movie.
damn dude it's exactly this honestly. A ton of shit these days feels exactly like this.
It feels much less like people want to honestly tell stories and more like they want to either copy some tropes in a shallow way to churn out corporate product or b***h about tropes and "subvert" them just to subvert them in a way that also...is still routine somehow and sells corporate product. While media has always been a business it used to feel like some people wanted to make something with some influences and idea from a variety of sources now everything feels like a copy of a copy of a copy or an attempt to subvert a shallow idea of something based on just hearing about it.
Everything feels incestuous cynical cliche and shallow.
Maybe something like Elemental would have worked better as a Disney+ exclusive. Either that, or it should have been released in Spring or Fall instead of getting BTFO'd by summer blockbusters like an iToddelr.
I can't have sex with Ember.
On a different note it's race allegory was handled poorly, I personally belive if the elements were just representations of personality types, that you'd have a stronger film. Make it about the person on the inside not the outside. Also RomComs aren't great kids film material, there's a reason Wall-E and Up had adventure stuff attached.
>I personally belive if the elements were just representations of personality types, that you'd have a stronger film.
But then even parents and children might be different elements.
Agreed, Elemental only made back 0.94x the budget so far. With three flops in a row, maybe they should just return to the old output of one film per 18 months.

Remember when they could make touching stories about sentient robots/toys that everyone could relate to no matter the demographic? Nowadays every pixar movie feels like the creators vanity project to use the movie as their personal therapy session. It's unreal.
The new stuff they mske reaks of millennial/twittet users who had no intention of making a movie for kids or family.
I don't think the personal story approach to newer movies is even flawed tbh, I think it can be done well like in Coco and Soul (but I guess Soul also has the sentient blob element to it). Elemental is just straight up a shitty movie
As other anons pointed out, this shit isnt for kids, it's not even for zoomers or boomers. It's made for a suoer specific breed of millennial. It allegory'd too hard. >turning red uses the creator's experience being a teenage daughter of chineses immigrants in toronto >elemental uses creator's experience being a chinese immigrant in a multicultural city thats segregated
I know they say to write what you know but this shit is too on the nose that it feels like their personal fanfiction
The funniest thing about this allegory movie is that even the people who support the message have said that this movie has a moronic metaphor using elements for races because fire is actually dangerous. It's like xmen using mutants as a standin for racism when a mutant can be a literal nuke
I thought it was fine, middle of the road Pixar. What really went wrong was the marketing. No one knew about it and the few that did didn't really have a good idea of the plot.
Marketing can't be blamed. The movie really had no real plot. All they had were the romcom scenes to play up, because they were at least visually interesting.
It had three plotlines right? The canal water leak, the forbidden romance in both that her parents wouldn't approve and they assume that touching could be fatal, and then the "I don't want to live my dad's dream" plot that kinda came in underdeveloped quick near the end. It's not super story focused but I thought a lot of it flowed because the two leads had a pretty engaging chemistry which is a massive plus in what's basically a romance movie.
It has a meandering plot, but no real plot that marketing can sink its teeth into. What would marketing use as the hook? That's why they chose the romcom scenes to showcase. There was nothing else.
What the frick is up with the generational trauma shit and asians in like every movie now? Is it really just that the rich privileged ones only every had being yelled at for not getting straight As and kids thinking their food was "weird" as their absolute worst problems growing up?

Nothing, it was a very cute movie about Asian fire girl who discovers what she truly wants in life with the help of whiteboy water blob.
It was a BMAF movie and we'll be seeing more soon 🙂
The water dude was voice by a black man
He has blue eyes.
The Water Folk are black
Then why do they hate spicy food?
Because the Fire people being Asian is the deepest idea they had. Everything else is shallow.
Is "shallow" a racial slur in Plato's Elements?
Could be for the Water folk.

Her grandma had a vision of the future. A toll being payed.
That's some ugly shit. I'm not watching this movie if the cgi looks like a PS2 videogame.

I found the romance cute but the characters were very cringe to watch, specially the water cry babies.
I'm waiting for streaming so I can pirate an hd rip
Looked boring and cringe
The racism allegories were super stupid.
Pretty cute and wholesome movie. It is in no way a master piece but pretty decent still
>Something as fantastical as Elemental People.

But then even parents and children might be different elements.
So? It's like horoscopes. People don't care. Explicitly tying it to race is worst.
But the different elements can kill each other by touch.
So? Pain and damage as a consequence of getting close to people is like the central theme of Evangelion and that worked out fine.
It's about to break even.
Anon, we explained this in another thread. Breaking even is 2.5x the budget. Elemental needs 500m worldwide. I just don't see that happening.
Agreed, Elemental only made back 0.94x the budget so far. With three flops in a row, maybe they should just return to the old output of one film per 18 months.
Spiderverse did this in a fraction of the time.
Mario did it in an even smaller fraction.

Pixarbros? What happened to us?
She was super cute bros
I wish she had more fanart.
Looks way too similar to Inside Out
Previews looked absolutely boring
Kids would want to watch "Guess who's coming to Dinner" in cartoon form.... why?
They wouldn't. But someone at Pixar/Disney thought it was funny
>It's a rom-com with dramatic elements

Remember last summer when pixar thought that kids wanted to watch a shittier Interstellar in cartoon form.
It was marketed as guess who's coming to dinner, but it's actually not like that at all. The trailers did the film a real disservice.
As other anons pointed out, this shit isnt for kids, it's not even for zoomers or boomers. It's made for a suoer specific breed of millennial. It allegory'd too hard.

I thought it was a cute romcom, but that's its problem. It's a romcom with no real plot, so what family would want to watch that.
The trailers didn't really do much to help it. Nothing in them screams "must see in theaters".
The funniest thing about this allegory movie is that even the people who support the message have said that this movie has a moronic metaphor using elements for races because fire is actually dangerous. It's like xmen using mutants as a standin for racism when a mutant can be a literal nuke
same problem with zootopia's allegory for race relations

Hey, it's not just that. Someone called them a slur or something once. It gave them a panic attack, okay?
if no one's ever called you a slur, i don't think you have any right to police how people react to that. how would you know?
Everyone's been called a slur in America. People in America call eachother slurs as greetings even. She's just a frail asian that needs to go back to Korea.

Can you name any besides this and turning red? Also you act like those movies were Josh Luna tier nonsense. They weren't.
Enchanto
Nothing. Wokie went brokie and that's good.
how was the movie woke?
>inb4 racemixing
An Oscar Bait
They should of hired a wagie before Ember leaving, kinda a shit move to leave the dad dying from tuberculosis.
It's going up against a buttload of far more popular and existing IP's at a time when people don't have much money so they can only see so many. I mean, this movie is competing with:

wait, people think fire people represent Asians? they clearly represent Muslims
It's the third pixar animation about an Asian American with parent issues. He
Second with asian interracial relationship too.
Woke fatigue
It doesn't look cool and people don't care for the genre.

Not every movie has to break new ground. Yes, Pixar movies should, but we're way passed that point now.
It's an overall okay movie, but it did not need a 200 million dollar budget.
This would've been better off as a short cartoon to be honest
