Cinemaphile has utterly dissected "what went wrong" so much already but the general agreement is: It was written by people who didn't understand the parody aspect of the show and written with too much oversentimentality and "defanging" much of the old cast as a means to create depth but inturn removed much of the humor.
Basically it's written by the type of people who saw the death of Ponce de Leon episode and thought "Oh no poor JFK he's so baby :;(" and failed to understand what that episode was making fun of.

Thanks for the summary, I just finished binge-watching it, I missed out on all the discussion because the first episode leak turned me off completely. Although I have to admit I think Candice is actually a good addition. But that's like the only positive I can think of.
Columbus was the fan favorite, not just in Cinemaphile but all over the internet. And with the "disection" in mind its not hard to see why as he was one of the few additions that felt like he came from the old season. That unapolagetic mockery of teenage stupidty and pettiness amped up to hilarious degrees. He feels like he came out of the first season both in design and tone.
it really is this.
Out of everybody else on the show Christopher Columbus was the only character that not just I could see in the original clone high, but that served any sort of purpose at all.
>Watch a trailer for the new season >"THE FIRST SEASON WAS GREAT....BUT IT ONLY HAD ONE WOMAN WRITER!" >"SO NOW WE FILLED THE WRITERS ROOM FULL OF WOMEN!"
Great
They know what they are doing. When you get paid to make something you don't care if it turns out badly. You're just there to collect the paycheck and move on.
Re watched the first season and then watched the new 2 seasons.
They are just completely different shows.
First one is a period piece much like undergrads and the new seasons try to modernize the setting while sacrificing what made those characters good.
The new characters are not great either aside from Topher bus and the boss b***h, the later having a really weird design.
Also no Gandhi.
A show that was a parody of the highschool genre media at the time ended up being taken seriously as a highschool drama.
Modern-day fictional characters aren't allowed to be entirely problematic, and if they are, their attitudes need to be called out with sincerity so the viewers know the writers don't align with the fictional characters.
It's a completely different show. The OG was a satirical take on teen dramas that were prevalent at the time. The reboot is a zany teen drama that is mostly played for straight. Characters act completely differently, leaning into their fandom stereotype than their actual characters. Joan became a quirky, akweird, every girl, and lost both her compassionate and preachy side and her edge as the goth girl. JFK became a dumb lovable jock despite his main traits being a bully and a womanizer. He was arguably a villain in the original. Cleo is a typical dumb popular girl now. She was a fairly clever character in the original, taking advantage of JFK and Abe for her benefit. Abe is an absolute embarrassment, having lost his two closest friends and his charming qualities to become a whipping boy.
I wonder if season 3 got enough ratings to get a season 4 so gandhi can come back. I doubt it since I didn't find out about it until a month after release
Millennial writing
Lord and Miller only worked on the first episode and then let an inexperienced team handle the rest.

Oh, it shows.
I wonder how many failed reboots will it take before they take the hint.
