Cartoon Network stopped advertising it as much and competition started springing up, it was no longer the one "good cartoon" out there. Loregays went to Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, people who wanted a show with wacky shenanigans had Gumball and Regular Show.
Flame Princess was in like 4 episodes before she broke up with Finn. It's not a super big part of the show like this board makes it out to be.

This place here hates it a lot more than regular well adjusted people do, so I wouldn't really take everything said in these sorts of threads as gospel. But most fans can admit the show had some pretty shitty low points and sort of went up and down since the writers could be pretty inconsistent at times. So there wasn't really one thing that went wrong, just bad decisions mixed into an overall well received show.
The show's noteworthy aspects became the worst aspects of the show as seasons went by it became a bloated mess. That's why I just stick to watching Gumball since that show isn't a bloated mess like Adventure time.
It just lost its own sauce more than anything. Couldn't commit to what the existing fans wanted, couldn't commit to what the new fans wanted, couldn't commit to what they wanted as a creative team. As such it becomes a clusterfrick where everything's ever-shifting but status quo remains completely the same somehow because of how surface-level shock-bait the changes are.
I think they just either genuinely forgot what they were going for, or they never had an idea in the first place. The number of times they strike absolute gold is just as often as the number of times they piss out something utterly moronic, so statistically speaking it's probably just random chance
