It's important to define 'everyman', because people think it means a bland cookie cutter rep of the average joe. Literally Joe Average. It's not.
Peter is an everyman in the sense that his problems and successes are things every man can relate to. His tragedies and his loves, his failures and his fears. His relationship with family and friends is his greatest appeal to me, how he always tries to do right but often sabotages himself because of his own faults. Everyman isn't indicative of his appearance or personality, but of his humanity. Because nothing about Peter is average. He's above average height, canonically very handsome, beyond gifted intellectually, very mouthy and inclined to not tolerate disrespect (formerly). Has an extremely good work ethic, is extremely dedicated and principled, has a resume a mile long with a love life at least half that. He's also got a robust and extensive social history with regular developments and tragedies because his life is a soap opera, and that's not something an everyman has.
The only average things about him were that he was raised by a nuclear family, which isn't so average anymore. And he's orphan. Him being a genius or a nerd, however you want to define that, isn't even average.

Whenever you read a book by Slott, Lowe, Wells, et. all it feels like it's written by someone with zero life experience and zero grounding in reality. It's always wacky unnatural shenanigans and "what if X was Y" bad fanboy mashups. There is no humanity in these books and that is the number one reason Spider-Man is bad. You could make a Peter and MJ have a natural falling out story, or an MJ half-heartedly moves onto someone else for another man story without the unbelievable bullshit tied to it and it might even be good or interesting. But no one behind these books has any real relationship experience to write something like that, so they default to zany magic shenanigans that arbitrarily upend everything the characters were thinking and doing for decades. It's always the worst possible versions of every questionable idea they have and I'm tired of it.
There are points where that'd be believable, but after them surviving the single most traumatic experience a couple can have (losing a child) and emerge closer, its kind of hard to buy them separating organically.

Marvel Comics Denies Ms. Marvel's Death and Rebirth Came From Kevin Feige Himself
Miles Morales writer Cody Ziglar claimed that Kamala Khan's controversial road to becoming a mutant was a request from the highest highs of Marvel Studios.
Speaking on an episode of the Amazing Spider Talk podcast (via ComicsXF) Ziglar recounted a story from Wells, who claimed that the ask to kill Kamala off—and resurrect her as a mutant—came directly from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. “[Wells] had told me months before the plan, which was, [Kevin] Feige was like, ‘Hey, I don’t do this very often but, can you please do this to make things in line with Marvel because we have some stuff we want to do with Kamala,’” Ziglar said. “So [Wells] was like, ‘Frick, I’m the guy that drew the short straw? People are going to be very mad that I have to kill Ms. Marvel.’”
Marvel Studios declined to comment to io9 whether or not Feige was involved in the decision, but a Marvel Comics spokesperson familiar with the situation flatly denied that this was the case, describing the decision to make Kamala a mutant character—a focus she’ll continue as part of the X-Men line’s 2024 relaunch, From the Ashes—as an explicitly editorial decision, one in the making well before the events of Amazing Spider-Man #26.
Like we said, this has been a common development in comics for the past decade and a half (and even before that). Marvel comics may provide the source material for Marvel’s movies and TV shows, but the latter are infinitely more widely consumed than the former; having elements of the films reflected back in current comics to entice moviegoing (or stream binging) audiences to come and check out what’s on shelves is just part and parcel of the business in the age of the superhero adaptation boom. Kevin Feige involvement or not, something like this was perhaps always inevitable.
