in the original story it's unexplained (the real reason is New 52 wanted to do 1 year of Batman stories without Joker, so they faked killing him off to build mystery then had him come back a year later in a big story, which worked very well because everyone was anticipating his return)
Later when he returned Snyder got handed the story and retconned that the face-cut was to do with the theme of his new story (that Joker hates the batfamily for making Batman soft and weak, and wants to become more extreme so Batman would get rid of them and make it just 1v1 again, smile beneath a smile, like that)

He didn't cut it out. It was cut out by a one-timer villain (i don't remenber who) who planned to sell his face as a in a black market that makes auctions for supervillain relics

And the was also a short period where the rebooted version of Duela Dent found it in the sewers and they went nowhere with the character after that

Joker asked him to, they were working together before this and Joker instructed him to come to his cell and remove it before Joker disappears
he then comes back and helps Joker again with his big return

          >Joker asked him to, they were working together before this and Joker instructed him to come to his cell and remove it
He did? In my memory the guy just managed to get him and saying "'i'm going to do something veery bad to you" and Joker just went "Ok! Sounds fun"

Yeah he did. He's called The Dollmaker, he's a huge fan of Joker's. In Death of the Family he helped Joker sew together all the Arkham Guards into a living tapestry

you're getting him mixed up with a different story. Dollmaker cut it off because Joker told him to, then they left it in his cell and they both disappeared, and GCPD kept it locked up in an evidence fridge. The guys who sell relics are dick grayson villains from Black Mirror, they sold Joker's crowbar, not his face.

It’s a really baffling choice. The idea of the New 52 is it’s a good jumping on point. Regardless of your thoughts on The Court Of Owls story, it is good for secondaries. You don’t need to know all about Batman to get it, it pretty much explains itself well. Then they immediately follow it up with Death Of The Family, which presents this weird edgy Joker with no explanation and draws upon a ton of historical Batman comics. If you don’t know A Death In The Family, The Killing Joke, and Under The Hood this comic is basically indecipherable. You might say “but those comics are famous, everyone knows them,” yeah, comic fans know them. Imagine your only knowledge of Batman is Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and then you decide to start reading the monthly comics. Court of Owls, okay, then this. It’s a baffling choice because it goes against the entire intended point of DC doing the New 52.
