Yup, I've been saying this since I first saw the movie. She should have accepted that being "just Rey" is fine because she can still have family and friends that she chooses to associate with. She casts aside her Palpatine lineage but doesn't have to take up the Skywalker name, that's so forced and awful.

Her entire character only exists to try and shove aside Luke, the masculine hero, and replace him with a female knock-off. That's the entire purpose of the character being written.
This franchise is so stale with all the light side stories and all the protagonists always resisting the dark or tuning away from it. The one time we got a dark side fall with Anakin it wasn't well done. Dark side Rey that doesn't turn back would've been true supervision and engaging.
That's what Kotor is for. At least you get to decide there. But I doubt they'll ever make a movie where an antagonist or dark sider wins or is presented as a protagonist.
The closest thing to that was again a game, which was going to be about Maul, but it got cancelled.
Modern audiences would range if "the bad guys" won.

Rey is beloved and respected by all other characters for no reason.
That's what makes her a Mary Sue, not whatever arbitrary successes/losses ascribed to her actions. Having a basic arc doesn't make you a good character.

I don't seem to recall anyone on her home planet loving or respecting her. And the reason the other main characters do is because she earns actually earns it by being useful and (unlike a certain Chosen One) "a good friend".
She starts to say Skywalker, but then she’s cut off and we cut to a scene of a horrified Luke waking up from a nightmare. Mara Jade asks him if he’s ok and Luke responds saying he’a fine. Mara Jade then tells look to go back to sleep because they have to wake up early and get ready since Han, Leia, and Chewie are coming to visit Ben at the academy tomorrow. Then there’s a post credit scene of an unknown man in the unknown regions saying how after all these years since the death of the only person who could him, Sheev, he’s finally ready to return back to the known galaxy. It’s Darth Plaeguis and we’re set up for a the real sequel trilogy.

I actually think modern audiences would like it. They got over Kylo Ren killing Han Solo and ending up loving him even before he turned good.
