He only moved backwards through time while he was in the box. I think the first half of his life he was friends with the protagonist, and the second half he spent living in the box (traveling backwards in time) until finally popping out just before the events of the film

the character is kinda kino. This was the project that nolan got closest to touching greatness but it all crumbled down. Still an interesting movie to watch for what it could've been.
