what's so inspiring about being wheelchair-bound that it needs representation? doing tech support for the actual heroes who get shit done and risk their lives?

Because Cass HAS to be Batgirl

Babs was in that chair for 20 years before Cass was ever a thing and in that time developed more as a character than she ever did in her time in a cape. Babs doesn't have to be in a chair but her going back to being Batgirl was one of the most extreme cases of character regression.

11 years anon. Really not that long. She's been back longer than the gap between her and Cass' debut.

The wheelchair thing just meant she couldn't get back in her costume and found another reason to be helpful. That's the way I see it. Otherwise you get what she's doing now which is half and half. But when Barbara became Oracle, she allowed other girls to be Batgirl and be a mentor while also being an information broker and hacker that even the Justice League relied on. Her being disabled also gave her a tragedy to overcome and grow as a character.

    >representation

The idea is that paraplegics can live fulfilling lives with meaningful work. They're not miserable burdens. Real-life paraplegics don't have magical technology to fix their disabilities, but they can still find happiness, meaning, and pride in the things that they can do.

Oracle can't do everything that walking people can do, and most walking people can't do things that Oracle can do. Disabled people can contribute things and live active lives. We all work together and help each other, yay. So yeah, it is more unique and inspirational than being another cute girl who can roundhouse kick among thousands.

Of course, any excuse given by the story for Babs to willfully refuse to fix her spine is BS and does spit in the faces of disabled people. It's better to just ignore the magic tech of the world, and instead just treat her disability as something permanent that she needs to live with.

Being paraplegic does suck. Even if we pretend it doesn't cut off a lot of opportunities and we can just solve hiking and dancing and swimming and sex with ramps and parking spaces, paraplegia quantifiably shortens lifespans and decreases quality of life with health complications like impeded circulation and infections. Someone who willfully refuses to fix an injury, with no downsides in treatment, is a quack. Disabilities are something to be fixed. A wheelchair helped me get around and live life when I needed a wheelchair, but being able to walk is objectively better.

But nobody needs stories about how being disabled objectively sucks. It obviously sucks, you don't need a story to tell you that. But it's not the end of the world. Disabled people are worth investment.

the only reason she's even disabled is because fanboys have a 13 year old boner for Killing Joke so the whole rep shit feels downright dishonest when it can and has been retconned.

        >tech support
        >lead a team for over a 100 issues
        Come on.

Regardless, babs as oracle appeared over 400 times (while prior as batgirl she showed up 100 times both in the span of 20 years) with a well-developed role that made her stand out from other heroes as well s more distinct dynamics that define what the character is. Its also a concept ever more relevant in this day and age where everything is in the digital world than it was back in the late 80s and 90s.

Not really, she was disabled because that story was in continuity, and it was kept in continuity for 20 years where it lead to meaningful development to a character that prior had been basically written out of the books.

it's funny because she was a lot like Bruce but at least she had enough sense to know when to give headpats, keep morale up, and move people in smarter ways though the scheming kinda bit her in the ass a little

There's a two fold problem here: Babs had a more unique character with her own actual shit going on as Oracle. This does not require her to be in a wheelchair, but it did come about because of it. The actual problem isn't the wheelchair getting removed, though for some people it was a nice touch, it's that it was done to just turn back into another Batgirl (who went on to have really stupid stories that reduced her back to some silly college girl).

It was only "retconned" because "Batgirl is Babs" is the nostalgia pandering. And it wasn't even retconned to begin with, last I heard it just suffered from the typical Nu52 era Batman/Greenlantern history condensation: She was still shot, in a wheelchair as the tech head, and then got some magic spine tech to fix it. Which frankly makes it way stupider than just a retcon.

So we have a compelling character, both because of but not entirely because of the wheelchair, who legitimately had her own section of the setting to play around in removed just so we can have the "original" batgirl back and all the shallow tedium that comes with that kind of thinking.

As opposed to BATgirl? The batman sidekick who primarily deals with batman villains?

            >compelling character
can't get very excited about a rotten foundation

            >not entirely because of the wheelchair,
yes it's because of the wheelchair. it's right to retcon it.

They didn't retcon it tho, she still got shot, she was still oracle, she just got a lobotmy with the spine heal.

It's not more inherently interesting though.

20 years of boring barbara as batgirl stories say the opposite.

Didn't Barbara never even have her own going before she was Oracle? Not like she a solo act then anyway, but she did get to lead her own team. Hard not to feel like that alone means she was less of a sidekick post-crippling.

This guy gets it. Another girl in spandex kicking bad guys can make for a good story, but a non-powered paraplegic superhero is interesting as soon as you put those words together. How would that work? And more importantly, I haven't fricking seen that story before!
Putting Babs back under the cowl in an already oversized Batfamily is not necessarily going to be boring, but it's at a disadvantage from the start. Why not roll with the character who is inherently more interesting?

maybe you should actually read the books. The reason why she avoided any treatments or why Bruce was able to walk was covered. Multiple times. People were asking why she can't just get her ability to walk again for years
